Here's the culmination of my first painted set of the Bones I pirates. I'll just let the photos speak for themselves (and I apologize, I'm still working on the photo thing). They were a lot of fun to paint, the women a little more difficult I think due to the sculpts. Gruff Grimecleaver is a really fun little mini. I'm only disappointed when I looked him up in metal and realized his metal version is holding a chicken. How awesome is that! So a chicken might be in the future of my spare version of him. For feedback, I'd work on boosting contrast, putting in more shadow. Looks like your paint may have gotten thick in a few spots, so just watch your consistency.

I second cash on his comments, it took me a long time to realize the importance of deeper shadows higher highlights, well done on the black pirate as in not using black and using shades of brown to get a realistic skin tone and love cannot aim Santa. Well done all round ;)

Yep, higher highlights deeper shadows. It is a mantra I say to myself every time I sit down to paint. It's difficult for me to judge at times. I guess it becomes easier with practice. :-)

Thanks that is definitely feedback I need. I am always afraid to add too much water to the paint, but maybe I need to as the layers get higher. And that seems to be the consensus so at least I know what I need to work towards, or focus on the most right now.

Thanks I'll need to make that my new mantra as well. Especially since it seems to be the most common feedback I'm getting.

 

I usually use the reaper triads to do all my layering, is the color depth in a single triad not enough? Should I be darkening the darkest color and lightening the lightest color for more of a range? I realize it could just be my painting too, that I'm not leaving enough of the dark, just trying to get an understanding of if that range is enough or should I be expanding it.

 

Just want to really say thanks everyone who's provided feedback to me on this or any of my other posts, it really does help in making me try the things to be a better painter.

Triads are a great place to start, most of my early work was just using triads. But most of the triads by themselves don't provide enough contrast for folks looking to progress their skill level beyond tabletop. I'd say it would be worth it for you to experiment with paint consistency to get a feel for it. Possibly watch some videos, though even when someone does good demonstrations of consistency, nothing beats playing around with it yourself. I still struggle with it all the time.

You can get more layers than three out of the triad by lightening the highlight with a lighter color and darkening the shadow color with a darker one as well. 5 layer stretch, 7 layer stretch...
