I can get plaster from an artist supply store about 30 min away, that's as far as I'm really willing to go.  So I make do.  ;)

Have you talked to the manager of the Arts store? A lot of places are willing to order items for customers, and they may have some kind of access to Hydrostone or Merlin's Magic through distributors.

A brief update: I got my sample of mold making compound (smooth-on 30) in the mail today. I won't get to try it out until next weekend probably. Until then, I've been trying to cast four molds each night, two floor tiles, two with wall bricks.

@Shakandara.. I wish.  Really difficult to find around here, The Michael's around here doesn't even carry regular plaster, and the only hobby store left in the city focuses on card and dice games, very few minis/paints and no casting supplies.  I'd have to get it in from out of town (~90 min drive one way), and ordering online/shipping that kind of weight is expensive.  I can get plaster from an artist supply store about 30 min away, that's as far as I'm really willing to go.  So I make do.  ;)

It's a been a while, but IIRC the 50lb box from Clint Sales was a pretty good deal, delivered. That will keep you and your friends in plaster for a while, and no messing around trying to source smaller packages locally.

Canyon state dental supplies has excalibur for $32 for a 50 lb box, shipping is a lot $23 per box, but once your order goes over 200 lbs, they can bulk ship it for less on a pallet by semi. 12 boxes delivered from Arkansas to SC for less than $50 per box is not bad.

Check with a big hardware supply joint. Over here you can get the really top plaster - all imported - or there's a semi-local plaster manufacturer that also makes a dental plaster. By talking to the hardware people I got them to put two bags of it on their next order, then I picked it up from the store. It was $60 for two bags.

The bags are 20kg.

Procedure: find plaster manufacturer that is carried by a big hardware chain. Look up website, locate specialist products, locate dental plaster. Phone nearest store in hardware chain, ask if they do special orders, ask if they can get stuff from the manufacturer's catalogue via special order. Place an order; wait. By pure luck they were getting a restock the next week and I had the gear inside 14 days.

I live just 15 min south of Hamilton, Ontario.  Closest place I know that sells plaster in quantity is Curry's art supply (https://www.currys.com/generic.htm?ECINFO=hamiltonstore), closest place I can find that sells Hydrocal/Hydrostone is in Toronto, Sculpture Supply Canada (http://www.sculpturesupply.com/contact.php).

Didn't really want to hijack the thread.  I'm pretty lazy about things in general,  If I felt it absolutely necessary I'd just eat the shipping costs and have some delivered, but I appreciate the offer.  Maybe I'll call up Curry's and ask them about ordering some in on the weekend.  :D  Wouldn't hurt.

Just a brief update. I tried my hand at making my own molds this past weekend.

Here are the first casts, along side the originals from the molds.

I think they came out o.k.

The plan is to do a series of 3x3 molds, so that way I can mix and match them as 6x6 floors and have some variety, while still cutting down on casting/building time.
