3rd Annual Reaper Forums Large Model Paint Challenge 2015 Rules and questions

Recommended Posts

Categories:

40-99mm wide/tall (Reaper only)
100mm+ wide/tall (Reaper only)
Diorama
Non Reaper models over 40mm wide/tall

Reaper contest:

-- entries must be Reaper figures. Any 40mm or larger figure, metal or Bones, in production or OOP can be entered
-- any figure which was painted and finished in 2015 is eligible
-- the deadline for entries is Dec 31, 2015 at 11:59 pm CST
-- a diorama is defined as two or more figures on a scenic base that helps to tell a story. The diorama may have smaller figures, as long as there is one large sized Reaper figure in the entry
-- you may enter as many times as you like, but only one prize per person will be awarded
-- each entry needs to be uploaded to the appropriate thread. Please attach your entries using the forum uploading feature or hotlink from the Inspiration Gallery. We want to make sure they're visible at all times.
-- you may submit between one and four images of each Single Figure entry and up to six images for Diorama. They do not need to be stitched into a single image file.
-- you are allowed to enter miniatures that will also be entered into other contests that might overlap ours.
-- the judges or Reaper reserves the right to remove entries if deemed inappropriate, but we're pretty laid back here and this is just to cover our butts.
-- the judges and Reaper can clarify and amend rules at will.

Prizes:

Reaper has approved prizes in each category:

1st prize $50
2nd prize $30
lucky drawing $20

Image Enhancement:

-- digital enhancement ("Photoshopping") of your entry is strictly prohibited.
-- no clone brush, healing brush, airbrush, or other brush work. Fix your paint with paint, not with Photoshop.
-- no adding or removing background elements from the image
-- if you add a logo or a watermark Reaper cannot use your image in their gallery. Note that if your image is selected for the Reaper gallery, you will be credited by name under the image.
-- cropping, global color balance, and global level adjustments are allowed ("global" means "the entire image." You may not "pop" colors by only selecting some areas for level adjustment.

Non-Reaper contest:

-- entries which fit the above requirements (40mm+) but were not made by Reaper can be entered here.
-- there is no Reaper prize support for this category
-- there may be 3rd party support for prizes, this has not been finalized

Can we use one to prime, basecoat & such? Because I just got one, and was looking forward to trying it out...

I'm pretty sure he's ruling out digital tools with that statement, which will do a pretty poor job of priming your models, not actual, physical brushes of any kind.

Yes, the rules are referring to touching up your photos, not touching up your minis.

EDIT: Also, w00t! w00t! It's that time of year again!

Also, you may want to clarify as to whether we're talking about base sizes or miniature height/width. There are some miniatures intended for 50mm bases that are not 40mm in height...

We also have conflicting rules from the last 2 years.. Dragons specifically said the Diorama didn't have to be Reaper minis, but Giants didn't specify anything for Dioramas specifically, just that all models had to be Reaper..  thoughts?

With prize support from Reaper, I'd say at least the giant sized model should be Reaper in a dio, if not all. Just my 2cp. Seems like the kosher thing to do.

Same here.

Oh, so just to clarify, we can use airbrushes?

Physical, real-world airbrushes are allowed. The "airbrush" tool in Photoshop is not.

Surely the single-mini categories should run up against each other, right? 40-100mm and 100mm+, or 40-80mm and 80mm+? (Or I guess compromise at 90mm...) Minis between 81mm and 99mm are technically ineligible right now. Also, is this height or base diameter?

I would rewrite the diorama category definition as: "a diorama is defined as two or more figures on a scenic base that helps to tell a story. The diorama may have smaller figures, as long as there is one large sized Reaper figure in the entry." It's cleaner and makes it clear that the big mini has to be Reaper, not just some goblin or something. I believe this has been the ruling in the past anyway.

Glad I am, that this contest is going the way it is. I had plans for a Diorama for the last year, but I was awaiting a certain Reaper figure from the Kickstarter that didn't make it to me in 2014. Now I can do it for this year.

I think I'm going to work up the nerve to finish big C for this one. He's languishing with his basecoat on, but at least he's not naked.

I was basing sizes on base size.  Since there wasn't technically an 81-99mm base size I didnt think it would be impacted. But I can update it..

Hahahaha we just finished up one! Thankfully this one isn't due until after next Christmas. I've got a few ideas bouncing around in my head, that hopefully involve an airbrush this time around.

Reaper normally does not give prizes for non-Reaper minis in contests, only at Reapercon. The first year we had a special exemption in order to increase participation. And for dioramas we recognized that there are a lot of great, small minis from other companies that could enhance a large Reaper figure. For a Reaper prize, though, the focus of the diorama should be a Reaper figure.

Please use the full SKU and name of Reaper minis in the titles of your Show Off threads, per forum guidelines. You can find this information on the blister card or in the online store. I also like to give credit to the sculptor in a tag, so people can find their favorites.

We have a high volume of posts generated from this challenge, which is great! But it's also creating a lot of work for the mods. Ladystorm has already urged folks to comply with these guidelines.

As an works well, this challengehas been moved to be a bi-monthly challenge again. The longer time frame theoretically will give less stress to painting, and allow more complex jobs, and more sinister challenges.

      FAQ
      Reaper only? - No.
If going on vacation, can I paint a mini(s) ahead to cover that time frame? - Yes.
Are speed paints acceptable - Yes.
Can it be a mini started previously? - Yes.
      Based or unbased? - Yes.
Do minis for exchanges count? - Yes.

      NEW RULE - Size Equivilancy
(This list is subject to change as bones 3 releases)
Medium and smaller = 1 ea
Simple Terrain (plain floors, walls) = 1ea
Complex Terrain (http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/Terrain/latest/03518 or such) = 2 ea
Large (Giants and the like) = 2 ea
Huge (Most dragons, Demon Minotaur Lord, etc) = 3 ea
Bigger (Kally, Khanjirra, etc) = half of quota rounded up
      Colossal ("Tianot,") = quota

Due to the variable nature of a CAV I compare them against a generic 28mm figure and the Avatar large figure. I take height and bulk into considering if it is worth 1 or 2 figures.
If it's not in this list, it counts as 1. (not yet updated for the CAV II/III figures)

If you have a question on the size, please post it here, and I'll address them individually.

Much like last year, the idea is to help those of us that normally paint VERY little or not as much as one would like, to start painting more.

      You challenge begins...now!

      And Our Mantra:

      Participants:
If your name is missing, or you believe your count is incorrect, please PM me. Please note: to make counts easier, post in the bi-monthly thread and include the tag RPChallenge

      The objective:
To paint 52+ minis throughout the course of the year via bi-monthly quota
(each bi-monthly thread will have the quota listed as well as the master list)
I request that when tagging your posts, please use "RPChallenge" to help with locating minis from this - I am making a more concentrated effort in 'bookkeeping' this year. If someone would be willing to assist in such, it would be much appreciated.

      What qualifies:
      Darn near anything!
      Reaper/non-reaper!
      Any material!
Shelf of shame minis from ages long forgotten!
      Exchange minis!
      Speed paints!
Armies! (Though I'd encourage perhaps something outside the army as well)
      Any Size!
      Based/unbased!
Etc! (I think that covers everything)

      Year long challenge
Pick a miniature of size large or greater to complete in the Jan-Feb Block. In Nov-December, purchase (if needed) that same mini and repaint in the same scheme to see direct side-by-side improvement or changes in your methods

      LE GASP! I'm on time!

Please see the main post here for rules, questions and general chatter, while using this thread to keep a list of links to your show-offs or show-off related comments in a single post: A reminder to please adhere to miniatures posting guidelines as usual.

All the information you need should be here.

Due to the revised format, there will be more than one bonus challenge available for this month. Including a "Hard mode" which Is some combination that may or may not have a source behind it.

      Your challenge is: 8!

      Bonus Challenge: The First!
Hindsight! - OK let's be obvious, you SAW this coming. *rimshot* paint a miniature with glasses!

      Bonus Challenge: The Second!
Our annual favorite challenge returns. February Fingerpaint!
Pick a miniature that is NOT terrain.
      This is pretty self explanatory.

      Hard Mode Challenge!
February holds "National Margarita Day" and often hand-in-hand with the tropical drink, is gaudy 'Aloha' clothing! Paint a mini if your choice where the majority of the exposed surface must be free-handed in the mannerism of such! Yes that's a lot of freehand.
(I honestly just wanna see someone paint a slime covered in freehanded palm trees >.>)

      Good luck

The game is made up and the points don't matter

All the information you need should be here.

As usual, the new format holds a "hard mode" challenge!

The Last quarter of the year 2019 because real life is a bugbear sometimes.

      Your challenge is: 18!

      Bonus Challenge: 1!
Fall! Paint a mini that has fallen over (for whatever reason) (Pompeii guy works for this too!)

      Bonus Challenge: 2!
This is Halloween! - Paint a mini using only colors that have black, orange, and purple in the name. You may also use the paints available from this year's ghoulie bag.

      Bonus Challenge: 5!
Festive feast - Since both US And Canada have their Thanksgiving in this time bracket - paint up a mini (figure or terrain) to have some food being presented, if you can do a drinking vessel to be painting like a full glass, even better!

      Bonus Challenge: 4!
For-lack-of-a-better-idea- December 15th is national Cat Herders' day! Paint a tabaxi, or any other mini featuring a feline. (It's a real holiday, go ahead, look it up)

      Hard Mode Challenge 1!
Jack-o-lantern's light - Paint a mini where the only source of light would be coming from inside a jack-o-lantern. Pumpkin may be part of the mini/base or sculpted

      Hard Mode Challenge 2!
Under Wraps- Paint a mini so that anything that any non-flesh (armor-weapons-cloth-etc) looks like it's patterned wrapping paper. This is assuming a humanoid figure. Dragons or such apply the same challenge to the whole body.

As always, the game is made up and the points don't matter!

      July and August 2019 Challenge

      Your challenge is: 9!

      Bonus Challenge: The First!
Independence Day! Both Canada and the US celebrate their independence days in July. Keeping it clean - paint a mini that resembles the most absurd stereotype of the country, whether it's a lumberjack riding a moose with a jug of maple syrup, or a fat dude in a scooter with the american flag and a big mac.  Or something from the film Independence Day, that works too.

      Bonus Challenge: The Second!
August 22nd is National Spumoni day. 3-layered Gelato dish. Paint any mini in a themed pallet around your choice image of said dish.

      Hard Mode Challenge! Eruption
Also in August is the fabled eruption of Pompeii. A full-size diorama is a but much to ask - but instead theme a mini around trying to escape the eruption (lava flows, flying chunks of rock, etc) particularly utilizing the OSL and an ashen look.
