Willen WIP - Dalyn Talas, Elven Sword Mage (Reaper SKU #03597)

Recommended Posts

So with Willen on his way to Vegas right now as I write this to vacation, we talked about a painted figure exchange. For his, he wanted something to represent his old TTRPG/D&D type character "Willen" and told me the story of how he was from Rivendell, an outcast who was good with the sword and with magic (both lightning and ice being his preferences).

I found Dayln Talas, Elven Sword Mage on the Reaper Site, which we both thought was perfect. I did an alteration to the sword since the PC had a longsword instead of a curved blade, used some files and got it straightened out.

Starting out, I went with the base first and I'm currently working on the figure. We meet up on Sunday to hang out, paint, and talk, so I'll probably be able to finish him up by Saturday night.

It's all about that base... that base... that base! (WARNING: Picture heavy!)

First off, I took a piece of 2 inch x 2 inch wood to use as the base, then I took some plasticard and cut to size over it.

Next, I used some Secret Weapon broken columns and placed them on the base, then I used cork to build some old stairs. Between the columns, I used some small rocks and PVA glue to put them in to look like broken rubble between the column base and what broke off. The red/pink stuff is Vallejo Red Oxide Paste, it's basically a very finely ground pumice paste, I used it to give more texture to the base.

You can see here I took more plasticard and cut out some Elven Runes to place on the side.

Here you can see I've got it mostly primed up and then used a few secret weapon washes to get some definition to show.

Skipping ahead a bit, I've painted it and stained it with washes to get it to look like what I wanted it to. Inspiration struck me in the middle of this, and I added even more rubble to the area at the bottom of the top stair. I also added a Hirst Arts piece that Bonwirn sent my way a while back, it's the urn/vase at the top. The figure will be on the 2nd set up, approaching the urn..

I decided that I wanted a creature to be in the center, but not a whole creature. I have some creature parts and decided to make it submerged in brackish water. This is just realistic water with secret weapon washes Dark Sepia mixed with Dark Green. I used a bit of silicone to make it so that the realistic water wouldn't leak out around the area I wanted.

Skipping ahead a little bit more, we have the nearly finished base. I've added OSL to the runes, hit the base with some more staining. Then after the pics, I added more water effects since the stuff likes to shrink and added some more color and texture (not shown yet) by putting in some tufts of grass and flowers, to give it the feel that this ruin has been overtaken by nature.

Another little bit here, this time a couple of pics of Willen. I need to take a few more tonight.

Very happy with how the cloak came out here and with his face/eyes, eyes are very tiny.

I've got a bit more work done on him than this, with a purple robe under that blue cloak.

I would glaze a little bit of the color you used on the hair into the darkest places on the cloak and work on the transitions up to the light grey.  right now it is a bit stark and while the brightness is right, I want to see an intermediate blue.

ETA: Love the base, that is cool.

COOL DESIGN The water and the eye creature! Heck ya!

Thanks! Yeah, that creature just hit me as a piece of inspiration, spur of the moment thing.

Oh the hair is going to be golden blonde, so far it's just base coat of intense brown with some inktensity chestnut brown to give it some more pop. I'll look at the glazing of the mid-tone of the blue though, that's a good idea.

Thanks for the C&C!

I'm just thinking, the color you used for the base coat is about right for a nice complement shadow to darken and desaturate the color on the cloak.

So mix in a bit of the intense brown into the blue dark blue base and do a glaze into the shadows?

Assembled my crew and prepped and primed them.
Two clopsen troopers, a lizardman recruit, sniper and another recruit/ chisler.

A gnoll commando, medic and recruit, and a cultist recruit/hacker and trooper.

Edit: It is a bit funny that My crew isn't using much of the actual Stargrave miniatures other than a few arms and guns, but then this is just the first crew, and I'll need some ruffians and pirates as well.

Finished my first mini this year, and oddly enough it was a speedpaint, taking just over an hour...

On the flipside, some of those colours work together really, REALLY well, like Sunrise Orange and Heart Throb Paint.

I love me some weekend painting!

Got another one from the 90's batch of Ral Partha's.  This one is a Drow Elf.  Was feeling like trying some of the darker skin tones after watching another RVE on it.  Feels pretty good!

      BATTLE REPORT!

      Wins:
      * Skin combo: Black Brown, Black Red, Orange Red.  Used in conjunction with one another.  The highlights are still on the darker side, but you can still make out muscle and shape.  Win!
      *  Used copper/brown combo to bring this guy to life.  Feels very warm, but still needs some kind of "pop" color somewhere.  I tried to make that happen on the fletchings on the bolts, but feels like it needs more.
      *  Gradient work on the weapon.  I was trying to think of it radiating heat, since this is the underdark afterall.  I wasn't able to pull off a glowing effect or OSL, but it seems like it works.
      *  The face - getting the mustache, side burns, and eyes to really pop was fun.  I feel VERY happy about the eyes.

      Misses:
      *  Not wild about the accessories colors.
      *  Questioning the color chosen for the sword.
      *  Was messing around a few times on what parts were wood, metal, or otherwise on the crossbow.  Meh.
      *  Hair is still an area I struggle with.  I did 3 layers on this one.  Deep grey, light grey, white.  I feel it comes out strong, but not super good on showing definition or volume in the hair.

Always open to any feedback anyone has.
I'm also curious to think of what kind of base to put this guy on.  Any thoughts?

Well 2020 is over and even though the year wasn't so great I did get my dragon goal of 12 dragons completed (actually completed 15 !) So with the new year I'm looking to try it again.

The last year I did a bunch of dragons from all eras a d makes.  This year I think I will make the challenge a little more specific.  This year I'll try for 12 dragons from defunct companies: grenadier, Ral Partha, Thunderbolt Mountain, heritage, and others that are no longer producing today.  Whether i include minis from companies that died recently, im not sure (and I  know Ral Partha lives on as Iron Wind and Grenadier lives on as Merltion?  But I'm including them because its my challenge and the ones I have are the originals.

That said the first piece I did was the Bridge of Sorrows.  It came out really well so I let my better half look through my old boxed sets and she chose the next one:  Clutch of Fear!

This is another mini that I have had sitting in its box waiting for decades to be completed and its time has come (besides if I really mess up they have started recasting the molds again so its not an utter disaster. Also, since i have this one in the original box, I thought i would do a WIP to show how it goes.

Here is what it look like when I opened the box...

All the parts are there, including the instructions (more on those in the future) and an "inspected by 3" as well as assembly instructions.

Hope you all enjoy the ride.  I'll try to be diligent with updates.
