MinipainterUS
So anyway, I was in one of the dark recesses of the shop when I found this jar filled with a strange murky liquid... Upon opening, I discovered a dozen or so minis in a Pine-Sol and water solution. As near as I can figure out, they have been sitting in there for somewhere in excess of 2.5 YEARS! Took them out, rinsed them thoroughl, dipped in simple green for a couple hours. Here is the result: 1- There was zero paint on them anywhere. 2 - The metal seems to have degraded slightly over time, easier to bend and generally softer in characteristics. 3 - Primer and paint applies with no problems nor visual anomalies. Not a procedure I would recommend, but if anyone was wondering about long term effects, there it is

pae
That's hilarious. I've left minis in simple green for a few weeks at a time, but wow....2 and a half years! Very impressive.
Digital M@
If they are plyable enough you could use the figs for some creative custom pieces. They could be suffering from the effects of powerful magic or some such.
Lars Porsenna
Hiya, What material are these figures cast in? I remember the pre-pewter lead used in the US was softer than, FREX, British castings (or lead castings today, which must have a much higher tin content). I recall a lot of my old Grenadier and other lead figures being easy to bend, as well as domestically produced GW... Speaking of which, I may have some figures soaking in Pine Sol for that long. I may have to check them out soon... Damon.
Frankthedm
That is worth noting! I have a ral partha orc chieftain sitting in pinesol from beginning of 2003. Brake fluid seeps into plastic after a few months and softens it.

Rodnik
I've got some miniatures that have had a primer coat on 'em for about that long..
Enchantra
Whoa.... 2.5 years in Pine sol... Yeah I would suggest cleaning more often. Which reminds me I've had a mini sitting in Nail polish remover since early December that needs to be addressed.
blefuscu
That's hilarious. I've left minis in simple green for a few weeks at a time, but wow....2 and a half years! Very impressive. So I guess it's safe then... the shiny metal turned dark grey after 2 days of soaking for me so I took them out. Did the color change happen to you also? MinipainterUS
The minis were a combination of lead and pewter all were softer than normal, and all showed the grey color change. It hasn't affected priming or painting in the least.
Paintrix
Mercy... I have a jar of minis in paint thinner (was trying to get off liquid shoe polish used for inking them--last of two or three different strippers I tried) that's been on my counter, uh, over two years. Maybe even three. Shoe polish is still there, but the metal's fine. No, I still haven't bothered to take them all out.
Hells_Clown
So I guess it's safe then... the shiny metal turned dark grey after 2 days of soaking for me so I took them out. Did the color change happen to you also? Yeah the metal will change color after soaking for a while but that's ok, it doesn't harm anything. Just looks bad. There is a cure though. Cover the entire mini with primer. Then paint over said primer. Works like a charm!
