Hearing all those horror stories about high duties and VAT charges make me realy happy that i have relatives in the us who were kind enough to act as a proxy for me :-) I'll have to wait  longer then the rest of you, but by breaking up the awesome bones shipment into  smaler packages and sending them from privat person to privat person I'll won't have to pay those exorbitant fees :-)

A lot of us Canadians who live near the American border have services somewhat similar to that.

There are companies who specialize in receiving packages on the American side of the border (free shipping) and store them for a small fee until Canadians cross the border to get them.

It's a bit of paperwork, and most of the time you'll still pay for GST/HST at the border, and fuel costs, but depending on the items, it may come up to be far cheaper.

I'm now realizing that this would've been one of those times.

This *could* be a problem because I'd be too excited and giddy.

"Anything to declare sir?"

"Khanjira! Cadirith! Mashaaf! RUUUUUGG!" while making pointing gestures.

"Step out of the car sir."

Finally there was an update on the tracking site!

Canada 02/25/2015 9:05 P.M.

Package arrived at foreign customs office

So its been sitting in Canada for a day, which is nice to know that is hasn't been caught in any bad weather. I doubt it will be here today, but hopefully it comes early next week while I'm still on vacation.

Basically, I'm feeling the excitment!

My tracking updated too!  I'm a little sorry to have said disparaging things about UPS.  But only a little.

Canada 02/26/2015 6:49 P.M.

Package cleared by foreign customs office

So it won't be here today, but sometime early next week, probably.  Super excited!!!

Package has arrived at my friend's workplace! :bday::lol:

CAN$168.57 extra in HST...

The exchange rate has not been good to Canadians this last year.

If you don't mind me asking - What'd you order? how much?...  Is it just HST (13% of total purchase amount? does that include shipping costs in there too?)

I was expecting to get dinged for taxes, but I was worried about UPS brokerage fees, that kind of scares me a little... While my order for sure wasn't the largest.. it wasn't small.

Less than me

And I believe he has 2 friends in on the order, so that would beef it up too.

We were four guys who did a group pledge (I pledged the lion's share) in the intent on saving on shipping. Turns out it didn't really make a noticeable difference. And being in Quebec, HST is ~15%.

Last night my tracking updated and said that my package was at Canada customs on the 23rd. This morning that entry is gone but it says package cleared by foreign customs 7:11 pm yesterday. I'm hoping that taxes, etc won't be too high. I guess I won't get them bones today because they're probably in Ontario somewhere and I'm in Saskatchewan.

I live only 25 miles from the nearest town in the US and a lot of people here have mail boxes down there. I was told that it's $50 a year to get a box there. I've often thought about getting the box but never bothered. Free shipping within the continental US and some companies don't ship to Canada makes it tempting. A couple of times when I tried to order something using a friend's address the order wouldn't go through because my visa mailing address was different from the shipping address. :grr:

OK, that's a pretty big order, and about double what I got.  I'm feeling much better, and it looks like I'll get hit less then I was originally expecting.   My order tracking was updated saying it cleared customs yesterday afternoon... I've got slim hopes for today delivery, expecting likely Monday or Tuesday... my excitement keeps building.
