hmmm....this issue is a new one to me.......You are sayign that the sclera are pits?

And since we are talking about it what would make a face more easily paintable RATHER than enlarging the face itself. That woudl radically change the proportions too much or force to sculpt in a whole new scale.

Not being a painter myself I though that my sculpting method woudl make it easier to paint an eye, thoguh obviously painting them in the standard Manga fashion usually seen in miniature would not be possible just because of the size of the eye. I thought it would be a matter of white dot, color dot edge up the cheek color to the eyelid and done.

If there is a misatke I am making ( and this goes for ANY mistake I am making ) I prefer to know about it so I can fix it rather than continuing to repeat it. I have no ego when it comes to doing it right or wrong so dont think you have to spare my feelings.

The sclera around Ingvar's eyes are definitely deeper than the pupils as I tried getting some paint down in there several times.

Ironically, though the eyes on these figures are well proportioned and at times very frustrating, when I get them 'done' to my satisfaction they are some of my favorite eyes; probably because they are well proportioned and not crazy manga eyes.

I retract my former statement. I was hangry.

Ingvar's eyes, and Garrett's eyes make me happy now..it just took a little extra effort.

I've got Ingvar about 60% complete and a shot of him up in the GROUP WIP open. I'll be posting more pics of Garrett this evening.

I paint eyes the way that ub3r describes, and I have had some trouble with true scale eyes, like Tre's.

I wonder if the brown fill starting strategy needs to change with a deep-set eye socket and tiny sclera. Perhaps less extreme shading in the eye socket will cover it.

As a side note:

I usually find that open faced helms make it harder for me to maneuver my brush around the face, even if they sometimes have nice effects on shading.

This has been very enlightening for me. I will definitely apply these ideas in my next works. I do nto think i will be changign anythign drastically btu I think that making the eyes either small enough that they do nto NEED to be painted or makign them a little flatter might help.

Woah, none of that "small enough NOT to paint" stuff Tre. Eyes are very important to us figure painters, they give the miniature a soul when we paint them. Flatter is more than fine for most of us.

I think that the eyes are perfectly fine the way they are, if there was one change to be made and keep on mind I do to think that it is a necessary change would be to make the eyes flat instead of the slight raise.

That would allow the painter to paint the eye in and have some more freedom in deciding which way the eyes are looking. I don't think that is necessary but I understand why others want it, but definitely don't make the eyes smaller.

QFT.

Painters will keep trying to paint in eyes as long as they're there.

I would suggest a little flattening, and a little consideration for how somebody might poke a brush into the socket from multiple angles.

Y'know, it might be interesting to get some sculptors and painters together to talk about this kind of stuff at ReaperCon.

Honestly for heavily armored people I find fully face concealing helmets preferable. They give a sense of menace and authority that is missing from a human face. Their masks made Darth Vader, King Baldwin, Batman, etc the character they are. So I'd say discarding all face concealing helmets is a mistake, though I agree that the ones that are sort of halfway aren't terribly enjoyable. Either full on helmet menace or open face is my preference.

By the way, Tre, if you want to know how deep the mania goes, I painted eyes into this guy: http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/jackson%20dwarf%20sword/latest/14304, and I didn't even really stop to consider leaving them out, although I did think some slightly uncharitable things about Bobby Jackson while working on them (I'm Sorry!) - One eye slit is quite deep, making it tough to reach the eye within.

I will admit that Logrim is much larger in scale than most of your man-sized work.

Tre, please keep them as is, or just make them flatter. The way you sculpt eyes is just different from other figures I've painted and it just took me some getting used to. I think I've got a neat trick though I don't think I actually teach anyone else to do it at this point. But somehow the eyes I do for your figures look more realistic to me than other figures I paint.

hmmm....this issue is a new one to me.......You are sayign that the sclera are pits?

I've complained about this before, while painting Rollo.

Please make the eyes flat like the way Schubert and Jackson do them (NOT overly large, just the way they sculpt them flat). Sandra Garrity sculpts them like you have been (with the small ball and recesses) and I've stopped buying her stuff. I only still buy yours because otherwise it's just so amazing.

This is really a big deal for me. I love the proportion of your eyes (even if they're tough to paint so tiny), but having the sclera as a recess is a big pet peeve of mine.

You can't properly paint an eye's sclera if it's in recess and it limits what the painter can do as far as making expressions or looking off in different directions.

For those saying it's no big deal: Post close-ups of painted examples. Not tabletop. It CAN be done, but it will never be as good as a blank canvas flat-style sculpt.

Can I post other people's examples? Because I'm not even a tier painter by any means.

Personally I've never tried but I imagine if one didn't like the way the eyes were sculpted, but I think that the eyes could be cut away to give the flat eye that is so desired.

Cutting away would leave a recess, not a flat.

Tre can sculpt as he wants, he asked for opinions and I gave mine.

Maybe it could be filed down? I've never attempted it and just floating ideas out there.

I don't think there's a need for theshortness in reply, I know that you're offering your opinion and I'm offering mine, like Tre asked for. Maybe Tre will try a flat eye sculpt and I'll like it even better and it will be great!

Maybe it's just the older sculpts from before and around the first KSer days but the stuff I'm looking at here, and have painted, don't have recessed eye divots. If they did have such a think it would take all of 30 sec with some green stuff to smooth everything out.

edit: just looked through KS4 stuff (craven and such) and none have odd eyes. Pretty much your standard ball that about 50% of the stuff I own have.
