Barbarian Hordes by Red Box Games (KS #6)

Recommended Posts

Life is dirty and cruel. I may have to scale back, and I'm kind of upset about it, lol. Except not lol. I'll need to hit the RBG store later, anyway. But still.

I like the redbox sculpts, Tre is very talented and I have a number of the older models, the elf/viking types!

But I find these a bit expensive for KS minis, almost $10 a piece is a bit much for my wallet!

So I picked the Blood Rage KS instead, unbelievable how much you get from that one ..

Well there's a huge difference between METAL and PLASTIC figures. You are paying for a higher quality product and supporting a small businessman rather than a large company here and the man-sized figures are actually $8 each (or less if you do the higher pledge levels), they will be $10-$11 each when Tre puts them up on his webstore, so you are getting a nice little discount deal here. This is on top of him having to eat a 10% loss to Kickstarter.

Lastly, $8 or even $10 isn't really that much for an awesome figure. Go look at some of the "boutiques" out there and you'll see figures of the same scale and made from metal at $15+ easily, if you look at resin such as Kingdom Death, you'll see $25+.

Even Kingdom Death's plastics are $12.50 a pop.... which is more than Tre's metal.

Like Cash said, you get what you pay for.

Kingdom Death resin's are worth imo.

Oh heck yeah they are, but I was just showing a quick cost comparison breakdown.

Like Cash said, you get what you pay for.

I said 'sometimes' :p

But generally, the pricier stuff tends to be better. But Tre's casters are great these days, I've had no issues with the stuff he's putting out. Great detail, I don't think I've seen a miscast, minimal mold lines/flash. Great stuff. Given all that, not really expensive at all.

But good luck with those plastic minis. It boils down to where you sit on the gamer-----painter spectrum, imo. I'm hard over on the painter side, so the savings for plastic really doesn't mean anything to me if there is any sacrifice in quality/detail.

Btw, Tre's limited resins are really nice as well. Wish I had been able to get the set of those!

Their resin isn't better than anyone elses to be honest. :)

Very few defects and insanely clean.

Oops, sorry about that Cash.

Having the bad habit of stabbing myself removing mold lines from plastic I will stick with Kingdom Death moldlineless plastic and metal/resin for now.

Update #21

Mar 19 2015

Update # 21 New Berserker WIPs and HelsRider WIP update

Hey everybody!

Sorry this one took so long today. I am working working working trying to get as much done as possible to show you all what you are pledging for. I am totally confident that we can get the Berserkers funded int he time remaining. To hopefully help that happen here i have the latest WIPs of the berserkers. As always ALL feed back is welcome!

The shield face on the Helsrider is not going to stay that way. It is rougher than I had wanted so I have already torn that off and will be starting over on that again but you can see where I am taking it anyway. Also the rider will have a fur cloak over one shoulder and several boen trinkets on his back Ala Helsvakt preta porte.

Cheers,

Tre'

Actually, when you think about it, cheap plastic is more expensive than metal. I bought Mantic Dreadball two years ago and had to spend 20-30 minutes on every mini to fix mold lines and get them in paintable shape. Even with a minimum wage of 20$/hour, that's 7-10$ pr mini in time, before you add the actual price of the mini.

With Tre's metal minis, I use maybe 2-5 minis or mini, because the casts are so great

(I'm extremely focused on removing mold lines, I hate having them show up close to the finishing stages of painting of a mini and ruining everything :-(

      Andowyn Thrushmoor!
It's been awhile since I've painted a plain ol' character miniature. I spent the better part of today working on her and I’m overall pleased with how she came out. I really want to double my skill level by the time Bones V is delivered and I’m proud of my progress! Slowly but surely figuring out how to do faces, this one looks pretty okay, though her right eye is funky.

Since this is my first form post, the picture is her next to my first miniature! It's about four years old and I keep it around the rest of my collection in a place of honor

If anybody here loves cavern terrain and missed DF's first cavern KS KS2, this spring/summer around June DF will have KS6. The theme of KS6 will be Return to the Caverns and should be great fun for those who took part in KS2 or those who are new to DF.

DF had this to say and showed the below teaser pics

We're doing for Caverns what Dungeon of Doom did for Dungeons. A whole new batch of fun pieces to enhance your existing collection, but also completely stand-alone.

      Some of the key features:
New Core Shapes (diagonal wall, convex curves, 1" pieces, etc)
      Passages
Elevation (with stuff that's impossible on graph paper...)
Negative Space pieces (and new Terrain Trays)
      Flashy Pieces (Magnets & LEDs)
      Large pieces (4x4 and larger)

This looks like a very interesting board game with lots of new, fresh ideas and cool artwork (and nice minis - there is even a pledge level for just the minis: around 15 of them for $20 plus shipping):

      About this project

It's a harsh but lucrative business being a mercenary out on the edge of civilization. You must explore the harsh wilderness and engage in deep tactical combat, where the decisions you make have an impact not only on your own character, but also the world around you.

Gloomhaven is cooperative game of card-driven combat set in a persistent fantasy campaign which will change and grow as you play the game.
There is always more to unlock and explore in the world of Gloomhaven.

If you missed the first Gloomhaven Kickstarter (and retail sold out quickly) here is your chance. I backed that game the first time around and could not be happier with the results. Warning ... that box is heavy ...
