I was reading about this yesterday. I'm a little leary. My fear is that the models are going to suck and the "ape" suits are going to look like space marines or something similar. If the miniatures are anything like most of their cover art I'm going to be depressed.

Atleast they are basing it on the book and not the movie. I enjoyed the movie but the book was much better.

They've made a Starship Troopers movie?!?! When did that happen?

Yes, I know Verhoven made a war movie and used some names and such from Heinlein's book, but it was NOT Starship Troopers in any way, shape or form (I'm not denying it was a cool movie, it's just not Starship Troopers).

If Mongoose is true to the book and don't screw any of the coolness from the book up then I'll be the first beating a path to their door for this stuff (D20 Starship Troopers.... *drools profusely*) but if it's poor or it's contaminated IN ANY WAY by the Verhoven farse then I'll almost definately give it a miss.

Here's to hoping they're Heinlein purists :o)

The movie was competently done, but certainly the book was far superior, in concept. It always bothered me than whenever asked about the absence of the power suits in the movie, the fx guys/producers/director used to answer that it was either the suits, or the pretty bugs, since technology/money at the time didn't allow them to have both.

I guess it's gonna be hard to come up with a design for the suits that doesn't ressemble the GW style, since they have been at it for a real long time.

I'm not sure I understand that comment but I certainly don't agree with it. A little creativity on someones part and it would be no problem designing a power suit that is non GW ish.

Didn't that cheesey SST cartoon have PAs in it? Roughneck Chronicles or something like that. I saw like one episode and it was kind of lame, but the 3D looked OK.

Having not read the book, all I go by is the movie. And, I really liked it. Sure, I wish they had PAs, Tanks, Combat Robots, but I can see the point of omiting them in favor of the "pretty" bugs.

There's some nice looking PAs on www.trooperpx.com... This website was introduced to me via the TMP forums on this topic.

Personally, I'm looking forward to it. But, it also puts the squeeze on Reaper when it comes to AICOM.

If they wait around too long on this project, there may not be a lot of market left for them to use...

Of course, that's a big, fat IF AICOM ever comes out... I'm still waiting for the Starhawk VI, which is now 2 months late and no sign of being released anytime soon.

BL2, you really owe it to yourself to read the book, if you haven't. If you do, you'll become MUCH more aware of why Heinlein fans were soo-oo dissappointed with the movie. The movie basically perverted Heinlein's ideas that he put in the book, and turned them on its head. Also, the movie seemed to underplay some of the concepts of the book (the "big ideas," which were the core of the book rather than the PA, such as a citizen's responsibility to the government, and what it means to be a citizen, no doubt influenced by what Heinlein, IIRC an ex-Navy officer, saw in WWII as a private citizen...) or pervert them to Verhoeven's ideas. Personally, I think the director is responsible to keep the original author's message when doing a book-to-movie adaption, rather than add his own. I know some will disagree, but if the director/creator wanted to make a statement, why not do an original work?

Anyway, I was reading the Mongoose's message boards, and it seems the game will be a mix between the movie, the CG show, and the book. Lots of people rave about the quality of the licensed products Mongoose has now (such as Conan RPG mentioned in another thread, Judge Dredd, B5 RPG, etc), and if they can do that for ST, then it will be a cool product. I'm hoping that they'll just borrow the visuals from the movie and show, but keep the ideas from the book unpolluted by Verhoevenisms (I always thought he was a mediocre director too, and really missed the boat in what Heinlein was trying to say...).

I'm definitely stoked about this though (more interested in the mini game aspects though) and will definitely check it out when its released!

Just watched the movie again the other day, and it finally clicked that, some of the 'tactical' stuff ups like little to no air support, basic weapons etc.

This is based off the movie mind you.

The earth was at peace, therefore there was no need for masive miliatry spending or research. I mean they had no one to fight, and thus no impetus to make bigger and better. The armed services were basically just peace keeping forces, thus once they had the deadly weapons, serviceable ships etc they didn't need anymore. And the tactics they had would work great against humans. Thus the first movie caught them with their pants down, and they had to start thinking again.

Their lack of extra weapons etc always bothered me in the movie, but this seems to explain it, as well as cover the budget problems. :;):

Tactics?

I'm watching mobile infantry pouring out of dropships with little or no common sense....

There goes all them ideas about tactical deployments and what not, I mean come on, there really is a right and a wrong way to exit a Chinook, so I figure common sense would prevail when exiting out of a dropship. but then again, they did get lit up pretty good.....

I have the movie, but never read the book; seeing the movie, turned me off to the book, but knowing now, this wasn't the authors intent, I think I can give it a check out.

Being a Power Armor fan and Heinlein fan from the mid 70's, I was truly disappointed by the movie.

As for existing minis, I have some early 1980's power armor minis that have GW beat hands down. Can always use more.

Space Opera, Gamma World, and even Space Master had decent Power armor sketches and concepts which to me fit my idea of Power armor. The sketch at www.trooperpx.com looks too much like Battletech and others IMHO.

The 3D show about Starship Troopers I thought was half way decent and they were introducing heavy types of personal armor.

Just my randon thoughts and ramblings.
