D&D Collector's Series Purple Worm - WIP

Recommended Posts

I thought I should get off my butt on this one and get it done before my box of KS2 shows up. I know that once that box shows up that I will be really busy. Hope you all like.

Here is the start of the base.

Off to a great start, I like how you are going about the base on it coming out of the grass like that. Very cool! I'll definitely watch this thread as well, really enjoyed your Beholder.

Thanks. I thought I would go a different route and use grass. I was going to go dungeon floor brick but changed my mind. Thought the outside look might be different. The beholder was very fun but a pain. I had the hardest time with the eyes. I must of painted them 5 times...lol  Finally I said this will work.

Looking great so far!

I want that mini XD my local game store has one, but i can't justify its price >.<

I bought this some time ago when they had it at a really good price on amazon. I did order it from GF9 but the shipping wait time was killing me. So I ordered it from amazon and gave the other one (when it got here) to a very good friend of mine. He already painted his...lol

Wow, what an awesome looking mini. I, too, really enjoyed your eye tyrant thread. Looking forward to this.

Thanks.

Here is an up date. You can see from the pictures there was a big gap on the belly side and a smaller one on the top side. I had to fill them with some putty. I tried my best to follow the armor plates on the belly into the putty. The putty is easy to work with. Hopefully it blends and does not look too bad. I used vallejo primer and started to put some base paint down. The paint did dry a little shiny but I will fix that after the wash and highlights. The teeth will be the last things I paint. So far so good. This mini is very fun and looks killer.

More to come soon.

Finally got this thing done. Here are last of the WIP pics that I have. There are some pics that I did not post but you will see it in the show off thread. This was very fun to paint. I really like the look of the sculpt. Now I can focus on the big box of KS2 that just showed up today.

I'm pretty excited about finishing this guy. Stone giant (HT8c) from Otherworld Miniatures. I used Badger's gray airbrush primer, Reaper 09086 Stone Grey and 09087 Weathered Stone 09476 Woodland Brown, Army Painter Dark Tone wash.

From the Mid 2000's attempt to revive the D&D Chainmail come this Battered Troll Skeleton which was the biggest mini in the Ahumut's Legion Faction box. He has been sitting unpainted for many years as I  have found with many of the minis the D&D produced at the time they where a pain to assemble. In his case the full arm and no peg or post and his skull with a bit of the neck was its own part with a minuscule peg and post that did not fit right and would never be able to support the weight of the head. also with the base you had to hand cut the slot that you would tab him into which is the only time i have ever seen that on a mini base. So finally after adding metal post to his parts and getting him on a base I sat down and painted him.
He is your basic skeleton but I do like the little additions on the mini such as the splint holding the leg together and the leather wrap with a nail holding the arm in place  as well as the plate bolted on to the chest. It give the mini a bit more character. After finishing him i wanted to work on basing which is a part of the process i tend to neglect so tryed my had at some mud texture paint and still trying to get decent at using static grass and tufts. think it turned out alright but can always use more practice.
Also interestingly enough he is about the same size as the  77004 Cave Troll. So its like a before and after diet pic

Hey, all! Its been a little while and I finally sat down and painted something. I put these guys together and I'm really happy with the shading. I wanted to put some water on the bases, so I tried wrapping them with plastic and pouring realistic water in. It... did not go according to plan. The water cured unevenly, shrank, left weird tide lines, partially peeled off... Basically everything that could go wrong with it went wrong. Luckily, I had sealed the model before pouring the water, so I was able to peel it off with an exacto and some tweezers. I salvaged what I could and I think they still look pretty good.

I present to you the almost nuclear looking troll that utilizes FolkArt's Ultra Dye "Purple Rain" as its inspiration and base shadow and wash.  Also included in the skin triad are Reaper Blood Red and Reaper Brilliant Red for the highlights.

I'll add the remaining paint list later when they are in front of me.  For now, pictures:
