So You Are Thinking of Entering the Painting Competition at ReaperCon

@Heisler, my daughter has painted some things she wants to enter in the youth division.  Any rules for it that keeps me from showing off her work online or entering then into other competitions online?

As long as it was not previously entered in a Reaper painting competition she can enter it. Quite frankly with the sheer number of entries  we get there is no way we could check if it had been entered in other painting competitions, online or not.

That was my thought on both things you mention but wanted to verify.  I usually share her work online and she has been entering them into a patreon contest so I told her I would check before we brought them to RCon.  Thanks!

Would I be able to bring my cousins' figures to enter for them as they're a bit young to attend?

I believe the rulling is that they have to enter them themselves and be present?

That is correct, all competition entries must be entered by the artist, no exceptions.

It was mentioned this year that if you had a mark on your notecard ( I believe it was a black check) that your mini was in consideration for a Sophie. Could someone elaborate on that?

I believe that what they said was that was indicative of making the first cut. Someone else should verify that, though.

When I was a judge for a competition that used the same system as the Reaper system, the process ran in several passes:

  1. If a competitor has several miniatures in the same division, choose the miniature to judge. This is a group decision and is supposed to be the mini that the group feels deserves the highest score.
  2. Each judge in the group chooses a medal.
  3. If there are significant differences, discuss until a consensus is come to. At this point the medal color is known.
  4. Of the judged figures, determine which figures have some chance for a Sophie/win. My understanding is that in the RC competition, these got a check. Note that very good figures might not be chosen at this point if there are figures of a similar style that the judges think are a bit better.
  5. Gradually eliminate figures from consideration until you have all the awards to be given.

So the Sophie criteria is handled separately from the medal decision? As in a silver medal has a chance at a Sophie?

i know that both of my silver medal entries had the checkmark on their notecard indicating they were in the running for a Sophie

Same, that's why I was asking for a bit of clarification.

In our competition (GenghisCon in Denver), we would include any figure that any judge wanted to look at again. This would often include figures that did not get golds.

The only figures up for a sophie are those made by reaper.  So if you had an entry that was from another manufacturer and deemed better painted than your reaper figure entry, we would choose to judge the one that would score the highest.  We always want to award the highest medal possible. In my case, I entered 2 dioramas- one from darksword and one from reaper.  My darksword was judged for the medal because it was a better story or paintjob. But, it wouldn't be eligible for a sophie. So I had a black checkmark on my reaper diorama- meaning they at least looked at it for a sophie.

The sophie judging is usually done on saturday after we get in all the saturday only figures. We do the bulk of the judging on friday night.

As usual, the new format holds a "hard mode" challenge!

      March and April 2019 Challenge

      Your challenge is: 9!

      Bonus Challenge: The First!
March 8th is the birthday of Ralph H. Baer, often called the "father of video games." To tribute these early games - paint a character to resemble an early video game character (Think 16-bit era or sooner) the more obscure, the better!
Addendum: It doesn't have to ONLY exist in that era. It doesn't matter if it's the only incarnation of it like Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure or Power Pete, or originated but is on 5183 of the series (looking at you, Final Fantasy.) but the spirit is to that era.

      Bonus Challenge: The Second!
Bringing back the classic for April, the "Fools' Brigade!" Paint a mini in a patently absurd scheme! CAV with a bullseye on it...elf with an "I'm organic" tabbard, etc. The more outlandish the better!

Hard Mode Challenge! Ides Of March
Famously known as the date when Julies Caesar was assassinated, March 15. Make a small diorama (or large, whichever) of such an assassination about to, or having recently happened. Characters and environment. This will be counted as # of miniatures + 2 base and scenery.)

As always, the game is made up and the points don't matter!

Please use the full SKU and name of Reaper minis in the titles of your Show Off threads, per forum guidelines. You can find this information on the blister card or in the online store. I also like to give credit to the sculptor in a tag, so people can find their favorites.

We have a high volume of posts generated from this challenge, which is great! But it's also creating a lot of work for the mods. Ladystorm has already urged folks to comply with these guidelines.

As an experiment, this project has been moved to be a bi-monthly challenge again, that seemed to have worked so until further notice that is our format. The longer time frame theoretically will give less stress to painting, and allow more complex jobs, and more sinister challenges.

      FAQ
      Reaper only? - No.
If going on vacation, can I paint a mini(s) ahead to cover that time frame? - Yes.
Are speed paints acceptable - Yes.
Can it be a mini started previously? - Yes.
      Based or unbased? - Yes.
Do minis for exchanges count? - Yes.

      NEW RULE - Size Equivilancy
(This list is subject to change as bones 3 releases)
Medium and smaller = 1 ea
Simple Terrain (plain floors, walls) = 1ea
Complex Terrain (http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/Terrain/latest/03518 or such) = 2 ea
Large (Giants and the like) = 2 ea
Huge (Most dragons, Demon Minotaur Lord, etc) = 3 ea
Bigger (Kally, Khanjirra, etc) = half of quota rounded up
      Colossal ("Tianot,") = quota

Due to the variable nature of a CAV I compare them against a generic 28mm figure and the Avatar large figure. I take height and bulk into considering if it is worth 1 or 2 figures.
If it's not in this list, it counts as 1. (not yet updated for the CAV II figures)

If you have a question on the size, please post it here, and I'll address them individually.

Much like last year, the idea is to help those of us that normally paint VERY little or not as much as one would like, to start painting more.

      You challenge begins...now!

To paint 52+ minis throughout the course of the year via bi-monthly quota
(each bi-monthly thread will have the quota listed as well as the master list)

      What qualifies:
      Darn near anything!
      Reaper/non-reaper!
      Any material!
Shelf of shame minis from ages long forgotten!
      Exchange minis!
      Speed paints!
Armies! (Though I'd encourage perhaps something outside the army as well)
      Any Size!
      Based/unbased!
Etc! (I think that covers everything)

      Year long challenge
Pick a miniature of size large or greater to complete in the Jan-Feb Block. In Nov-December, purchase that same mini and repaint in the same scheme to see direct side-by-side improvement or changes in your methods

Pretty certain at this point I fell off the wagon got ran over by it, then chased it down and set it on fire (given the drought of these - explanation is in the chatter thread)

All the information you need should be here.

Due to the delay, there is going to be a normal and hard challenge for each month.

      Your challenge is: 13!

October Bonus: This is Halloween! - Paint a mini using only colors that have black, orange, and purple in the name. You may also use "Fresh Blood" and "Spectral White" as they are part of the monthly promotion.
Hard mode: Jack-o-lantern's light - Paint a mini where the only source of light would be coming from inside a jack-o-lantern. Pumpkin may be part of the mini/base or sculpted

November Bonus: Festive feast - Since both US And Canada have their Thanksgiving in this time bracket - paint up a mini (figure or terrain) to have some food being presented
Hard mode: Liquid Cheer - This can be done with the above - paint a mini where it's holding a drinking vessel - but paint it as though the mug were glass and you could see the drink inside from the sides (in theme - ale or wine is the best use)

December Bonus: Winter Solstice - To celebrate the shortest day of the year - paint a halfling or dwarf decked in wintry colors (think blues/grays/whites, maybe brown and a little bit of evergreen)
Hard Mode: Gift wrapped - paint a mini with any inorganic parts (metal, cloth, etc) being done to resemble giftwrap - little candy canes, trees, text, stripes, etc - bows optional

      Good luck

The game is made up and the points don't matter
