Werewolvians
Hi, I'm planning on painting one of my Bones II dragons as a white dragon. I'm thinking of using Factory White and some Snow Shadow for the underbelly and wing webbings. Anyone have any tips for painting white. I guess my big questions are, Should I undercoat the white? What color should i use as a wash? Should I wash it? Any tips would be much appreciated.
Dontfear
Some things can't be done all that quickly. A wash will make it look dirty all over. The tip that everyone throws out there is that it should be about 75% white in order to read as white. After that you can shade it with nearly any darker color. I would absolutely use an undercoat. you want to make sure that there is no trace of the plastic showing through and the shades will stick and stay where you want them better with an undercoat.
Willen
"Quick way", undercoat the whole thing with a color to be your shadow. A very light tan if you want it to read "warm" white or more organic, or a very light desaturated blue (like Ashen Blue) if you want it to look more scifi or "airy". Then figure the actual 75% of the are that is NOT in deep shadow and paint it white. When you are done with it, since it is a big dragon you will be at it for a while (unless you airbrush!), focus on a mix of the previous too and start blending. Once you are done, if you want to add more volume, pick a slightly darker / more saturated color to do a very small shadow.
Kormydigar
I would probably undercoat the whole thing with a bluish grey to set a tone for cool white. For contrast you could undercoat the belly scales in a brown then highlight up to a warm creamy white.
fishnjeeps
Here's some inspiration... I used a ten color for the basecoat then added white in layers until I liked the look. If I overdid the white, then I went back with a little tan to blend it back where it should be.
