Blast from the Past: Grenadier Manticore

I painted this mini about 25 years ago with Testors, and I was very very proud of it at the time.  So proud I brought it to my first GenCon for the painting competition.  When I got there, I realized the paintjob really wasn't that great compared to the top entries.  I guess that scared me away from painting competitions until I started entering the very friendly competitions here on the Reaper Forums a couple of years ago.  This then gave me enough courage to enter 3 figures at ReaperCon last year, where I got a silver, yay.

 

Enough rambling, here is the Grenadier Manticore from long ago (SKU65)

This looks way more like a mythic monster then the over te top monsters some companies produce these days,

I could have sworn there was a classic old engraving this was based on, but perhaps I'm confusing that with an old Monster Manual illustration.

 

It looks good and clean and effective. For Testors enamels it's very good.

Amazingly clean work; Testors was a bear as far as pushing the paint around on the figure.

 

Yeah, I like those Old School critters. A Manticore SHOULD look like something from an ancient woodcut.

Wow that is a fantastic job.  I can't believe that's 25 years old.  You really capture the ferocity of the beast I think.
