GNL Mats by GameNightLife

I submitted my PM the other day for all parchment. Not sure if I made the right choice or not. I am tempted to go buy some blue and some green for general forest/water use.

The problems I had with colors is what are the odds that the water or forest will start right on that edge??  Writing on standard parchment color with colored markers is good enough for me and is clear to the players in my opinion.

I got all green in hex and all grey in square, the way I see it we can always get more later. I having a feeling he is going to have a good long business from all of this.

I agree here.  Given this all goes well he should be able to sell a bunch of these.  I know my players wanted them yesterday.  They are eager to retire the Chessex map.

New Year's update!

Good news + Bad News

Posted by GameNightLife

So, we have some good news and we have some bad news.

We don't think an abbreviated text version really explains it well enough, so please watch the video for the brief version:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMEzhQBXt_Q

From the video there are issues with inconstant coloring and the grids are not lining up properly.  They are dealing with the escrow company about getting a refund and finding another manufacturer.

TLDR: individual samples were fine, but the print run has nothing resembling consistancy so they're having another manufacturer make the mats. Remaking the mats will obviously take time.

I've stopped looking at project turnaround dates. If I need something at a particular time, kickstarter isn't the place to get it.

I've stopped checking turnaround too, but it's only gaming projects  that have had any delay. Everything else I've backed - publishing especially (maybe only) - has been 100% on time. I don't know what that could be attributed to, but it's definitely a noticeable difference.

Also, from my impression - the issue was that the print run was nothing like the samples - not just consistency, but at all, and the manufacturer wasn't willing to admit to error.

Thank you, fellow backers. I'm not a fan of watching video updates, so I appreciate you all watching and writing a summary here. I've only backed a handful of non-game-related kickstarters, but most have had delays as well. It is truly best to never rely on a Kickstarted product to arrive within any given timeframe.

Gaming projects seem to have more stretch goals than most other projects I've seen and they seem to be one of the biggest contributors to delayed projects. However, there are plenty of non-gaming delays.

For instance I backed for a Temperfect Mug. It had an estimated delivery of July 2014 and hasn't arrived yet. On the plus side, that does look like it will deliver eventually and it has been a very interesting ks. It's a shame the updates are always backer only as they have gone into extensive detail of where and what caused the delays.

Another interesting fact from the video is that he is so committed to the project he sold his house in order to fund another run while the money stays in limbo with the escrow company to make sure there is no delay due to cash flow.

Takes a lot to do that but I hope it works out well for him.

That is a serious gamble. I hope that it pays off for him.

Makes me want to promote for him; go to local game stores once he it fully up and running and get his stuff out there. I'm in for this KS and I really like his stuff. I honestly keep looking at it thinking I'm going to convert all my stuff over.

I was in shock when he said he sold his house.

Yeah that was astonishing.

Honestly when they originally promised August or whenever it was supposed to be, I knew it would be delayed. I knew there was no way folks who had never done manufacturing before would be able to deliver so soon. So I have been pretty calm and patient about the actual delivery date. As much as, yes of course, I want my grubby hands on this product ASAP (it keeps coming up at the gaming table how useful these would be). When he showed what the product made so far looked like and how they took it to the escrow company to fix it I was really impressed. A lesser company would have probably delayed delivery by another year and done another kickstarter to raise some quick cash. So I'm thoroughly impressed with their dedication to get (duh) all the lines lined up, but even to get all the colors even.

But when he said he'd put his house up for sale, I yelled at my screen "no!" I respect him for doing it, but under no circumstances is a person obligated to put their personal finances at complete risk for a business venture. That's why America has all those nice protections for businesses so that the business owner doesn't have to lose their house over it. I really hope it was coincidental (like maybe he was moving anyways, so sold it and it is waiting to buy and using the cash temporarily) and that that escrow company comes through for him.
