77314: Fore! Bones Hill Giant

Right, so this was one of those crazy ideas I had one afternoon.  I looked at Jason Wiebe's Bones Hill Giant and decided his anger would best be directed at a golf ball.  So, I painted him up as a Scottish gent and asked poor Jack to stand in for a golf tee.  Just for fun, the tartan pattern is based on the Black Watch.  The base is made from sculpey.  The little rodents are supposed to be Orkney voles as an ode to Caddyshack.

 

 

I made the bunker texture using sandpaper pressed into the clay.  The cap is greenstuff.  The skin colors are walnut brown, russet brown and chestnut brown.  The hair is highlighted with dark elf skin and leather white. Let me know if you want info on the other colors.

 

I had some issues with my light setup, so excuse the pics.  When I'm less fed up with the lights I may re-shoot them.  In the meantime, enjoy!

Very nice work! You didn't go for the traditional stereotype of how a Scotsman looks either (pale skin and red hair). I like the work on the tartan and also the tattoos/warpaint. You've also done a great job on his expression. All around great job!

Oh good!  The Jack experiment worked!

I always have a hard time with white, so I cheated and after doing all the shading (I think I used chestnut brown, buckskin pale, leather and pure white) and then I glazed him- I think with buckskin pale and then went back in the bring the whites back out.  It smoothed out most of the transitions.  Glazing is like magic!

 

I initially started him as a skin tone experiment, so in hindsight I probably should have made him a redhead...
