77186: Tiik Warriors, and 77187: Tiik Champion

Recommended Posts

I'm painting up some aquatic PCs and monsters for upcoming ocean adventures.  I had primed and glued these to fender washers for bases last year, but only just got started painting them.

At that time I was priming Bones with a mixed brown of Burnt Umber and Titanium White, then washing over them with Burnt Umber to bring out the details.  These days I think using just plain Reaper's Brown Liner is simpler and works better.

The two Tiik Warriors are based on one-inch washers and the Champion is on a 1.5-inch washer.

One fish-man is going to be greenish.  I'm not really basing it on any actual fish species, although I may refer to pictures later.

I glazed a pure Iron Oxide Yellow on the bases to begin to build up a sandy color.

Then I washed over that with a much less saturated color with a similar value, a fairly complex mixed warm brown a little like a flesh tone.

oooohh    I see some water effects basing in your future!    (Pulls up a chair and a fishing rod and sits down to see what he can catch!)  This should be fun to watch!

I had some orange to work with, so I played around some.

I think I'm going to paint the Tiik Champion like one of those ridiculously extravagantly colorful coral reef fish, maybe with a reddish spine shading to a bluish body.  Still thinking it through.

I painted up the other Tiik warrior like a big goldfish.

I started working in some blues.  This is a quick test on the Tiik Champion.

post-8022-0-37295400-1430096835_thumb.jpg

The blue is a mix of Phthalo Blue and Carbon Black, lightened with Titanium White.  I started laying it down on the head and main body armor of the creature, blended to white towards the spine and pure Phthalo Blue towards the belly.

post-8022-0-94050800-1430096993_thumb.jpg

While that dried I added some of the mixed blue as details to the gold Tiik warrior.

post-8022-0-07177100-1430097036_thumb.jpg

I then extended the blue and white coloration down the Tiik Champion's tail.

post-8022-0-12276800-1430097079_thumb.jpg

And glazed a bit of it over the green Tiik warrior.

post-8022-0-97917800-1430097115_thumb.jpg

I wanted a speckled effect on the Champion, so I stippled over some white, some of the mixed blue, and some pure Phthalo Blue at the bottom.  For stippling one wants to use a brush that has gone a little wild and is not too soft.

I mixed a pale buttery yellow from Hansa Yellow Opaque, lots of Titanium White, and possibly a breath of Pyrrole Orange, and added further highlights, teeth, and creepy boiled eyes to the gold Tiik Warrior.

I then further lightened the mixed blue I had used on the Tiik Champion and added details to the green Tiik warrior.

I went back to the Pyrrole Orange (and some Hansa Yellow Opaque) and added more color to the Tiik Champion's spine and back fins, arms and legs.

post-8022-0-37549000-1430097521_thumb.jpg

I mixed a medium green from Phthalo Blue, Hansa Yellow Opaque, and Titanium White and added details to the green Tiik warrior's scales.

The last thing I did was give the Tiik Champion eyes, using black and the pale gold I used to highlight the gold Tiik warrior.  I think I am going to paint it like a sea horror come up onto land, so I will be adding highlights to the eyes later and making the body look shiny (Have you ever noticed that fish underwater look matte, not shiny?).

All the blues on the Tiik Champion so far have been based on Phthalo Blue, so I mixed up some Ultramarine Blue, a different, less greenish blue, and dappled it on at the bottom of the Champion's body armor.

I mixed a deeper blue and outlined the divisions in the armor.  The lining is a bit crude.

I did a comparison shot of the Champion with the Bones II Sharkman to see the size and saturation difference in the colors.

I think I've finished them, but I only took a few pictures as I went.

I painted up all their bases like multicolored sand.

Here's the Tiik Champion with some brighter oranges and red-oranges on its arms, legs, and spines.

And the gold Tiik with some gentle glazing of orange to soften the color transitions.

Here's a picture I took of the Tiik Champion after I did a lot more painting.  I'll try to take pictures of the others soon.

Very nice.

I would paint the eyes of the orange one deep black like shark eyes.

Make them scary and stand out

Thanks for the suggestion. I wanted to make them look like boiled fish eyes, suggesting a sort of unhealthy, possibly zombielike status. But I will give it some thought.

That would also be cool.

Your term of "zombielike" made me google "dead fish eyes". There are a couple there that might work. There is an especially gross red eyed one that might look scary cool.

I appreciate the research, but I think I am done and going to put these puppies to bed.

I really meant something like this anyhow, the good old hardboiled-egg-look of the eyes on the cooked whole fish of my youth.
