Dragon of lightning and storm from 77108: Shadow Dragon

This is the third of a series of five dragons I painted in the last two months. (Well, technically one of them isn't a dragon.) It's the Shadow Dragon, one of the two smaller (only about elephant size) dragons from the first Bones Kickstarter set, "Here Be Dragons," sculpted by Sandra Garrity.

 

I painted it up not quite knowing where I was going, starting with aquatic thoughts, adding stripes, and then going over the cliff into total madness.

Love that lightning effect. Trying to determine from the pictures, did you do some lightning around the mouth, to make it look about to breath lightning? Or am I imagining (or wishful thinking )?

The dragon has some sculpted lips and whiskers there. It has certain aesthetics of a Chinese-style dragon (which is why I was thinking watery when I started painting it). I picked them out in colors of the stripes to blend with the lightning and the chi-flow of the stripes, if you will, over the rest of the beast.

 

So I guess the answer is, possibly not with direct conscious intent, but the overall flow of the painting allows for that possibility.

 

I find a lot of my painting works by suggestion.
