First-Timer Advice

I think some of this might have been covered in a thread but I can't find. For us first-timers who are not entering any competitions, what do we need to bring along? From the class descriptions, it seems like a lot of things are provided. I'm considering just bringing some brushes and maybe a miniature or two I might want to try techniques on or ask advice on.

 

Can I get away with just brushes if I'm not entering anything? What else might I need?

Sit by Corporea/Miss Melons. That's my only advice.

 

 

And don't forget the chocolate.  I've got a bear mini to bribe Miss Melons with though.

Question, does one need to dress up for the banquet?

It is nice to make the effort but not required.

For me to dress up at the banquet would require me to wear the outfit all day or have it in the car and change before hand.  Oh and it would require me to have something nice to wear.

Bribery is not necessary, I'll talk to a hatrack if I get really bored. However free chocolate is always welcome. Personally, I'll use my basius pads and some putty as an attractor

I'm bringing my dice, dice cup, a notepad, post-it notes, pencils three card games (Chrononauts, Flux, and We Didn't Playtest this at all), and my 3DS in the hopes of getting spot passes. I'm really interested in trying out 5th Edition D&D and Fiasco. If I somehow wind up wanting to get into a painting class I'll bring my brushes. I'll try to talk to people but I'm a bit of an introvert. Going to this convention is me trying to get out more. Plus I want reaper swag.

Hi guys,

 

I'm thinking of coming over to ReaperCon this year from the UK, so have a couple of questions.

 

Classes are the primary reason for going, so I'd like to fit in as many as possible.  So...

1) Can you book what classes you want to do online pre-Con or do you have to wait until the Con itself?

2) Do classes supply paints/brushes/tools etc - I'd rather not bring them with me from the UK!

3) Cost - do classes come at an additional fee to the entry cost (I'm assuming they do) - and if so, what kind of cost is it?

4) Can you book up to do the same course more than once?

 

Venue/Hotel

5) Are hotels close to the venue?  Obviously I have no idea about Lewisville.  I don't mind walking - as long as it's not too far!

6) Presumably there will be places for food at the venue?

 

Events

7) I know there are some evening events depending on whether you go bronze, silver, or gold,but are there other evening events held?  I'll be coming on my own so I'd rather, you know, join in with something than go home and sit on my hotel room!

 

I'm sure there are more questions, but any input is greatly appreciated!

Keep in mind, I am not a Reaperpeep, and do not have info for this year. The below is based on past experience:

 

There is a class registration period prior to the con, and it is possible to sign up for classes day-of.

Paint is very easy to come by at the con; if you have a particularly favorite non-Reaper paint, you might bring that, but classes (and the large open painting area) supply lots of RMS. You should bring brushes, but any other tools you need will be supplied in the class. Outside class, you can find someone with an xacto or superglue or whatever of you need to borrow such and are friendly.

Classes do have an additional cost, in years past its been in the USD20-30 range.

I don't know whether you could book a class twice or not, and I don't know how many classes will be offered more than once.

 

I will also offer the most frequent advice I've seen about Reapercon: don't overbook yourself for classes! The artists are quite friendly and public folk...take at most two classes a day and use your non-class time to practice, and the artists will chat with you and give you feedback during the con. Also, classes eat into game-time! Of course, YMMV. There are some who take four classes a day and love it...for me, that would be exhausting and severe information overload.

 

I don't know about this year's venue and its geographic relationship to food or lodging, but there has been a shuttle in years past, and you're a member of the forums, so you'll have an easy time bumming rides to food places if need be.

 

There are official gaming events during the official con hours, and I guarantee you can find games of D&D, Fiasco, and probably Pinochle after hours...and there will be people painting well into the wee hours, too.

 

I hope I can make it this year, perhaps we'll see each other there!

2. generally not, but you can probably borrow some if you ask 

 

3. yes, it varies but usually under $15

 

4. Yes, but I would consider that rude, many of the classes are quite small (6 people) and you would prevent someone else getting the opportunity

 

5. yes, by American standards. You do not want to walk from the hotel, it's 2-3 miles along a busy highway

 

6. there are several restaurants nearby, within easy walking distance, many within a short drive

 

7. there are usually games and informal goings-on

I believe they have said that there was going to be a shuttle this year between the official hotel and Premier Event Center. Last year it was all at the hotel, so this adds quite a few dining options. Some of them have a bit lower Google rating than I would try with the family, but probably would alone. They haven't announced if there will be any options inside the center itself. Last time, they did offer pre-made sandwich lunches, which meant no scrambling for food. They weren't five star, but were edible.

 

As for evening events outside of the scheduled con, several groups do have their own traditions but can't really grow into more open events, mostly as they would swamp the restaurant they head to. Lots of gaming after hours, and there was usually something going on until the staff started turning out the lights. Always opportunity to start new traditions as well.

 

I am a bit curious as to where and how the evening gaming will go, be it at the hotel or venue. Have to see what gets announced the closer it gets.

That is a bit on the low side.  I think my cheapest class last year was $20.

 

As for rides to places there are always people willing to give out of towners a lift and if all else fails and it is after shuttle hours you can uber.  I have known a few that do the uber thing later in the evening in the Lewisville/Denton area.
