So who is excited about ReaperCon 2016?

Recommended Posts

There are no shortage of things to do in the Dallas area. Malls, aquariums, parks, shopping, theaters (good ones where you actually watch actors on a stage), are just the very tip of the iceberg. There are zoos, museums, galleries, arboretums, night clubs and more. You can even visit several different horse rescue ranches where you can tend to the animals and take them out for a trail ride. Always a great experience if you are visiting Texas. Spouses have been known to find other tag-along folks that would rather go shopping and leave the mini geeks behind to go see the sights.

The only thing that you have to keep in mind is that Texas is a huge state. If you live in a high population area with mass-transit, you're not going to have that available to you. Everyone here has a car to get around because everything is so spread out. You can get around on buses and rail, but it takes allot of planning and triple the time to get where you want to go. So plan for a rental car, ride share, or Uber/Taxi if you want to wander very far.

The GF has no interest in coming, but is happy for me to go. So I booked a room at the Fairfield! No plane ticket yet since I don't know if I'll be flying from Baltimore or NYC.

Depending on how tired I am I'll probably run some after hours RPG sessions!

I'm interested in how the events shake out this year with the venue change.  The banquets, meet and greet, etc.  And how well the classroom areas work.  The Hilton didn't do well in the classroom setting department.

I didn't think it was bad.  Not perfect for sure.  I am curious how it will go with all the shuttling that will be needed.

New location and a different set of challenges. Hopefully there won't be to many issues, just keep in mind that this is a brand new setting and a new set of experiences.

Yes, I realize that.  And it certainly didn't even cross my mind to not attend.  The Reaper peeps have proven time and time again that they have our best interests in mind.  The move had to happen and opens a new chapter in the Reaper Con fun I am sure.  Reaper Con is still probably the top Con I have ever attended.

I've been crunching some numbers, and I realized that if I increased the amount going into our "rainy day emergency fund" by $25/month, there will be $850 in there by Reapercon. Given that I'd estimated that this is almost exactly what I'd need to cover all costs (including meals and a very little spending money), I'd say that right now, attending sounds quite promising!! ^_^

Still not going to be booking any flights until it's about 2 months away, though, just in case.

*crosses fingers and prays mightily for a lack of emergencies between now and then*

I think my wife has enough Southwest Airlines miles to get me a free ticket to ReaperCon, which would cut down on the cost by a bit. I'll probably get Super Shuttle again to/from the hotel. Last time they upgraded me for free to a car. I'm going to try to fly in early on the 20th and leave later in the evening on the 23rd (currently booked at the Marriott for the 20th-23rd).

In which case you might consider flying out on Southwest. They are much easier to deal with on flight changes and cancellations.

I agree; however, Southwest doesn't service our local airport. I'd have to drive 2 hours north to Spokane, or 4 hours west to Portland, in order to do so, and knowing how tired I was after RCon last year, I wouldn't feel safe doing that drive coming home. Plus, I'd need to pay for long-term parking at the airport, plus gas.  -_- I can maybe look into how much a ticket on Delta from here to Salt Lake or Portland would be, then Southwest from there to Dallas, and see whether that would save money in the long run.

I will be coming in on the 19th. We are leaving home on the 18th and plan to drive as far as Nashville. Google says it is 10 - 11 hours from there so should arrive late afternoon.

Supershuttle is great for those wee hours leaving the hotel. Used em last year & have booked a return trip already. Holding out for now on a arrival trip.

Arriving early Weds so I'll see if any other options are available first.

& it's official!! (Well sorta....)

4 months out & time off request has been submitted!! In the past I'd submit time off in Jan with the Con in May or April. Figured it was time I did it.

Just hope my work company gets their act together & has me "officially" in the system in regards to vacation pay. Gotta love buy outs/mergers. Sad part is we bought them!!!!

I'm taking the last of my yearly at the end of July so they better!!!!!  :grr:  <_<

In accordance with the title of May's hobby goal section, and getting a bit bored with using the same colors over and over, I decided to open up the Box of Waiting and found these....

(back left corner) 2 Wizkids Blink Hounds
(back to us as NSFW) Vampire with Victim
(big guy in the back) Dungeon Saga Zombie Ogre Wizard
(in front of Zombie Ogre) Dungeon Saga Necromancer
(right of Zombie Ogre) 2 Wizkids Ghouls
(right of Ghouls) Female Wraith from Graveyard Expansion
(next to Necromancer) Undead Wolf from Graveyard Expansion
(next to Wolf) Female Mad Scientist
      (next to Mad Scientist) Stone
(next to Stone) Reaper WW2 Zombie German
(last on right) Orc from Learn to Paint kit
(front rank) various Mousings from the Tavern Set and Thankgiving and Christmas Mouslings.
There's more, but this is everything that has had more than priming applied.

First up was the Female Mad Scientist, who was one of the first minis I bought when I got back into the hobby. I started on her not long before I left Austin, and while I was happy with how most of her came out, I got a bit lost in what to do with her base. Her weapon and smiting glove were also unfinished. There's a touch up on her face from where she got chipped in transit, but the patch doesn't seem to show in pictures. (yay!)

I got her weapons finished, a bit of purple on her hat ribbon, and the beginings of her base.

The wraith, wolf, and ghouls received a coat of black wash over the parts that were already gray, and the wraith and wolf got further applications of Storm Gray. The skin on the ghouls was a base of Vampire Skin washed with Rainy Gray. Now that I have the rest of the triad, I can start getting them highlighted.

Like last year, this thread is to find roommates and transit. Being the con isn't at the hotel rides may be more important.

My situation: Room full at 4 Wednesday through Monday.
Rides unknown as flights not booked, but looking at noonish arrival Wednesday, into dfw, out if dfw Sunday around 7, maybe Monday if I can get the time off then. Either way I'll need help with transit if possible.

      On your marks...get set...

With the announcement of the HGI block being filled up for RCon this year, thought I'd I ask where everyone will be staying for the con this year. Helps with getting together afterwards or even during the Con.

I'll be staying at Hilton Garden Inn (HGI) this year.

Welcome to the House Procrastius Common Room.

      House Procrastius
      "Ego probabiliter ad cras"

Yeah, I know the other Houses got their rooms up before us.  Sorry, it took me awhile to get to it.  But you know, it still got done.  Got a little busy with stuff.  Anyway, have at it.  When you get a chance.  If you can't, it'll keep.

As a wise old teacher once said to me:

“Never put off till tomorrow what may be done day after tomorrow just as well.â€
      - Mark Twain

Now, I think the teacher was trying to get me to turn my work in on time, but honestly, I loved Mark Twain, and it sort of had the opposite effect.
