Shaeress 77066 RCon Speedpaint

Recommended Posts

Soo...title says most of it, speedpaint at reapercon, 2 brushes, 12 colors, pallet the size of a business card, and, being my first speed paint, my brain going "AAAAAAAHHHHHH!" the whole time. All in all, not bad.

Picture was taken at reapercon so...yeah not the prettiest.

The two things I would say as someone who does a lot of speedpainting is this:

Focus more on the eyes - even a messy paintjob can look great with nice eyes. I do mine quickly by applying a layer of white, adding the iris as a line down, edging it in brown or black, and then using fleshtones to sculpt the edging into a thin outline. It gives you nice definition, and only takes 5-10 minutes when you get good at it, although it's not the fanciest way to do them. Here're some examples of what I mean...

I find that, especially when boomed up like we do on the forums when we take pictures, eyes with good edging almost always look better than even the neatest of all-color eyes - mostly because it makes them pop, especially with lighter colors against pale skin. Otherwise, it all seems to sort of smush together...

The other thing is that it's a lot easier to mix different tones than similar ones, in my experience. Blue and gold and red and gold both do well, while silver is only really easy to do with dark colors - for lighter, brighter ones, I usually find it easier to do dark iron colors and such... I feel like a lot of detail was lost in this that using contrasting metallics and colors would have preserved. Obviously not a great suggestion if you have a color scheme in mind/time to work one out/are speedpainting someone for an army or regiment with their own colors, but if you just want to do up a couple of minis quick, having a few workable pallets with contrasting colors might be useful... for example, most of my cloth paints have metallics that they go with that I grab whenever I'm using that cloth.

That said, I love the shading on the cloth, and the hair color intrigues me... I'd love to see this from behind.

Depends on what you want to focus on really. You are typically left with very little time to ever get comfortable enough in one position to make something work. And even still, you're left in discomfort in some fashion.

Like sure. You're sitting and singing Disney songs but you're painting with your teeth or your less dominant hand.

Sure. You're moving around a table holding your mini out, but you're painting someone elses mini and someone else is painting yours.

Sure, you have a pallet and a mini, but someone just ran off with your brush, improvise.

I find it hard to believe anyone had perfectish eyes after that speed paint rofl.

I was in that speed paint. The tip of the smaller brush was bigger than the entire eye area. That some of us managed to make a dark spot in the general area of the face was an accomplishment.

I took a picture of mine and then started cleaning her up and re-painting certain areas. I'll post before and afters when I'm done.

The Al Fasid, also known as "The Corrupted", are HaqqIslam's heavy troopers that will get the job done no matter the cost.  Their methods aren't always the prettiest, and they're never the stealthiest, and they have their own tricks they bring with them to the table.  They don't care about glory, and are solely chosen for their solid record of getting the job done.  Some enjoy it, some are in it for the solid paycheque, and others do it because the only thing theyy know what to do is fight.  Today I have the HMG version, who also conveniently carries a grenade launcher that can shoot either regular grenades to keep enemy heads down, or smoke grenades to provide additional cover.  Oh, they also pack anti-personnel mines with them too...

Since the "tactical rock" under his right foot kind of looked rather strikingly like the backpack for a Yu Jing (even though I'm not having any luck finding models to confirm this), I decided to try and test out my planned colour scheme for them.  That's right, I'll be going with a dark raver / cyberpunk burnt neon pink for their general colour, because why not - I'm going with hot orange for my Haqq...

Please see the main post here for rules, questions and general chatter, while using this thread to keep a list of links to your show-offs or show-off related comments in a single post: A reminder to please adhere to miniatures posting guidelines as usual.
All the information you need should be here.

As a change of pace from the Hard Mode Challenge, this round will have a Skill Challenge.

      May and June 2019 Challenge

      Your challenge is: 9!

      Bonus Challenge: The First!
"Mayday!" is an international distress signal used in verbal communication in ships and aircraft.  Your first bonus challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to paint a miniature in some distress.  This could be a diorama, an adventurer falling into a trap, villian whose weapon just broke, or anything else your mind can conjure.

      Bonus Challenge: The Second!
The Solstices: June marks the beginning of Summer in the Northern Hemisphere and Winter in the Southern Hemisphere.  Paint a miniature or a pair of miniatures showcasing this duality.

      Skill Challenge: OSL
Try your hand at painting a miniature using OSL or Object-Source Lighting.  If you feel like this is something that is already in your wheelhouse, work on your technical skills in another area.  Practice NMM, TMM, wet-blending, sculpting, or anything else you've been meaning to try.

As always, the game is made up and the points don't matter!

Here are a bunch of Wizkids unpainted minis, speed painted in 1 hour or less spent on each, and no fancy basing either.  The latter ones are based on Reaper bases, I think the Wizkids bases are too thin.
      Oxen (2) - SKU WZK73099

      Crocodile - WZK90051

      Heroic Statue - WZK73864

      Dopplegangers - WZK90019

      Grell & Basilisk - WZK90022

Being that this is the figure that was the biggest reason why I picked up the Hassassin Bahram Sectorial Starter Pack (say that three times fast ), I was suspecting he'd wind up on my painting desk sooner or later...  I just didn't realize he'd have the honour of being the first finished this year, as well as my first finished Infinity miniature!

At some point in the near future I'll acquire some S2 holoprojector tokens for him, as actual 3D representations are nice.  Not sure where from, but I like my current Art of War Studios things, so probably theirs.
Oh, and for those who might be curious, that's a Global Evil Corp UniPod with two StairPods (well, one pack) in the first three pics, fourth one is a DuoPod with a StairPod alongside it.  Sadly no magnets yet for the terrain, but they're on the way, and will get here at some point

My goal here was to push myself to go as fast as possible. Start to finish it took approx. 2.5 hours, which is definitely a record for me. Contrary to my usual practice, I painted the integral base; when I do get around to doing a proper base, I will likely integrate it into the display. C&C welcome.
