Bones II Mudcroak, Squog Shaman: 77269

So this is the new Bones II Kickstarter frogman shaman, 92683, sculpted by Jason Wiebe.

 

I love this figure.  It has lots of delightful details.  Its staff alone is a treasure chest of goodies: a narwhal tusk wrapped with seashells and a starfish, with a little puffer fish hanging off the top.  The shaman is also wearing a frog skull which is available in the Boneyard as a separate piece.

 

The teeth, however, are silly.  Frogs don't have them.  I don't think this one could close its mouth properly on those.  Perhaps they are false teeth worn for battle.

 

I painted the shaman and the two warriors that go with it like a common leopard frog, the sort I used to catch as a kid.

The frog sculpts are some of my favorites as well. Love what you've done with him! The eyes, the pattern, the little details, excellent. As far as the teeth go, pacman frogs have teeth. ;-)

Of course these frog people are clearly mutations so teeth are just a product of that mutation.

Nice!  I agree regards the teeth: I've been tempted to attempt some minor putty cosmetics, but I'm not sure how that'll turn out.

By the way -- I just wanted to toss in there that I LOVE all the details on that staff -- both in the original sculpt (I love Wiebe's stuff!) and in your painting of it.  :)  I was a bit confused about the thing at the top of the staff while painting -- is that a SHELL of some sort, or some sort of strange spiny fruit, or ... huh, a fish?  I guess a blowfish it is, then!

 

I'm painting my frog-men up as Croaks for Iron Kingdoms.  I like the Jason Wiebe froggy guys better than the big-chinned cartoony guys from Privateer Press.  (I mean, they're fine sculpts and all, but they look a little too much like trollkin with fewer fingers in the Privateer Press version.  It's like the first Croak was doing the "ribbit!" thing with his throat expanded, and then the next sculptor came along and thought that was just how its chin was naturally shaped, and now they're ALL like that, ALL THE TIME, which doesn't quite seem right to me.)  I've gone back to a "frog demon" mini I partially painted up, and I'm putting it on a 50mm base to paint it up as a custom "warbeast."  Incidentally, it appears that Croaks in IKRPG do have teeth (despite being mostly frog-like) so I guess I won't mess with adding on froggy putty tooth-hiding lips after all.  ;)

A little more playing around.  After some comments on companion figures to this one, I added selective gloss and matte finishes.

Did you notice in the Reaper store, Mudcroak is different? He is holding the trident like one of the squog minions instead of the fancy cool staff with the puffer fish. I would like to maybe get a few more frogs and I love Mudcroak but the trident is my least favorite of the weapons and makes him less special. I hope it is a mistake on the store and not how he is actually be sold now.
