Filling the ranks of Outsiders

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody! I've been considering my collection of Outsiders, for D&D/Pathfinder. I'm keeping things simple and just doing four main groupings. Combined Angels/Archons (LG), Azata/Eladrin/Fey (CG), Demons (CE), and Devils (LE). I was hoping to get your thoughts/general input on filling the blank slots I've got.

Demons are pretty easy as there's a plethora in every edition and in mini form.

Type 0 (CR 7ish): Succubus (77067)

Type 1 (CR 8-9): Vrock (77262)

Type 2 (CR10-11): Hezrou (77377)

Type 3 (CR 12-13): Glabrezu (77307)

Type 4 (CR 14-15): Nalfeshnee (77308)

Type 5 (CR 16-17): Marilith (77393)

Type 6 (CR 20+): Balor (77315)

Devils are also pretty straight forward. I'm hoping the missing ones will come out in Bones 3.

Type 0 (CR 7ish): Erinyes (77281 or 77370)

Type 1 (CR 8-9): Bone Devil (77325)

Type 2 (CR10-11): Barbed Devil (?)

Type 3 (CR 12-13): Ice Devil (77324)

Type 4 (CR 14-15): ??? (?)

Type 5 (CR 16-17): Horned Devil (?)

Type 6 (CR 20+): Pit Fiend (77112)

Angels are pretty well covered in mechanically but not in miniature form.

Type 0 (CR 7ish) ??? (77364?)

Type 1 (CR 8-9): ??? (?)

Type 2 (CR10-11): Movanic Deva (?)

Type 3 (CR 12-13): Monadic Deva (?)

Type 4 (CR 14-15): Astral Deva (?)

Type 5 (CR 16-17): Planetar (77363)

Type 6 (CR 20+): Solar (?)

Azata/Eladrin/Fey is where I'm having a hard time coming up with anything.

Type 0 (CR 7ish): "Sylph" (77266)

Type 1 (CR 8-9): upgraded Lillend? (?)

Type 2 (CR10-11): ??? (?)

Type 3 (CR 12-13): Ghaele (?)

Type 4 (CR 14-15): ??? (?)

Type 5 (CR 16-17): ??? (?)

Type 6 (CR 20+): ??? (?)

I could possibly work in the Horned Hunter (89033) and Spirit of the Forest (77184) somehow. Would also be up for using the Cloud Giant (77162) and Storm Giant (77179) as they don't really fit with the rest of the giants in my world setting. Sort of as "titans" maybe? *shrugs*

I see a lot of 77###s up there.  Are you limiting yourself to just Reaper minis?  Dark Sword has some angels, but I don't remember what the illustrations from the MM look like anymore.  Something might work for you.

EDIT: Although now that I think about it, I believe they are almost all scantily clad females.

The only one I'm familiar with is the Horned Devil.

#34 from the Blood War set, this was a Rare so tends to be $20+.

But there is a non-collectable version (same figure) from the Dungeon Command line "Tyranny of Goblins" that goes for $8 to $12 dollars.

Best picture I could find quickly.

That base is 50mm/2inches across. Edited with correct base size.

@ Auberon: Ideally yes it would be all Reaper Bones minis. If that's not possible I suppose I'll have to look elsewhere. I wonder why there are less male angels like that. How odd.

@ Brother Jim: That Horned Devil is nice. Kind of a pain to have to try to strip and repaint it though. I'll definitely look into getting him if nothing else is available though.

He's a prepaint, the paint they use does not strip off (it bonds with the plastic when they apply it).

Better to just clean up any mold lines and fill any gaps before giving it a light primer coat.

I will second the idea of prepaints.  If you're looking for specific things to match the Pathfinder and DnD manuals, licensed Pathfinder and DnD prepaints might end up being your best bet.  And some of them are decent sculpts.  They might have a bit less detail once you prime over the prepaint, but they can still be pretty good.

Bones is still a relatively new line and isn't necessarily actively looking to fill specific slots as far as representing rpg monsters.

As for metal, I remember there was an old-school demons and devils minis Kickstarter awhile back but can't recall if they got funded or not. I know somebody out there has minis for all the various types of D&D demons and devils, although you may need to do a bit of searching.

As for the angels and eladrin, a lot of those can probably be covered by head/weapon swaps and pasting on some wings.

I seem to recall there being at least one or two archons and/or eladrin in the D&D prepaints.

I don't recommend priming a pre-painted mini. Better to apply a dark wash and highlight from there.

Two reasons:

First, more primer will obscure detail that is already pretty shallow.

Second, you never know how the existing paint will react to the new primer. Brush on primer is probably fine, but sprays can have strange solvents.

I've used a light Reaper brush-on primer coat on the Wizards of the Coast prepaints with success so far, though I have also added a few details here and there to some of them without using primer first and that worked fine on those occasions.

Fair warning this is simply not true. The non-collectible version has a substantially worse paint job and shallower details.  The former was to reduce cost for a board game by reducing the number of paint steps, and the latter seems to be from aging molds.

I have both, and you're right. Thje image is of the non-collectable version. The main places where the paint job differs is in the chest, face, and barbs. With the original collectible version had a lot more details and generally more colors. For instance the barbs aren't just flat white.

Every fiendish army needs tiny minions to throw through the meat grinders.  Today I've got some assorted imps and quasits (the demonic counterpart to imps for you non-D&D folk).

      First up,
      The Quasits

These fun little guys are the grunts of the demonic legions.  The front two are Quasits from the Nolzur's Unpainted set "Imps & Quasits" #WZK73719.  The back three are Reaper Bones Hordlings (77335).

      More Below the Spoiler:

      And up next,
      The Imps

These three imps are all Nolzur's from "Imps & Quasits" #WZK73719 and "Familiars" #WZK72563

      More Below the Spoiler

Was definitely going cross-eyed after painting these tiny guys.
What's the smallest mini you've ever painted? (Feel free to share pictures)

Showcasing more old-paintjobs from one of my former adventuring parties.  This time we look at Willow the Eladrin Warlock, represented by Feiya, Iconic Witch.

I enjoyed playing with colors with her, though in retrospect, I wish I had used some more magentas and purples.  I believe the leaves on the base were painted oregano.

      Reverse side under the spoiler:
Willow is an Eladrin of the Feywild.  When her world started to freeze over, she was sent by her patron to cross over into the material world and discover the source of the cold.  A stranger to Frostrun and an outsider to this World, Willow must rely on her new friends to help her save her own realm.

The male devils from the Bedeviled subset of the Bones 4 core set:

I did them in different colours just because I wanted to. They seem to be mirrored twins with the variations being in arm positioning and weaponry. I based them on 40mm bases.

#73 Male Devil with Khopesh (no idea what the official name is / will be)

#74 Male Devil with Trident (ditto)

Hello most valued supplier! We would like to make you an offer to purchase your soul. In exchange I am sure you would like some earthly power? Maybe the jewelled crown of Aquilonia?

#73 and #74 Male Devils from the Bedeviled subset
      Bones 4 Core set, 2019
      Reaper Miniatures

      Made in Bonesium PVC
      40mm bases
should be available from reapermini.com some time in the future in Bones.
