Its hard to give an exact ratio but i place it on my thumbnail after thinning. I can gauge transparency from how it covers. I tried to get a picture of the right consistency on the pallet. I'm not trying to be secretive i usually mix with whatever water is on the pallete paper. I don't pre mix glazes i just add a little more water and a little more paint till its right. Its very simple but I'm a simple person.

Hello there,

I'm looking to get a paint set to compliment my P3 set and I'm really both the colours in the normal and fantasy ranges, so I wondered which one is better?

When I say compliment by the way, maybe I mean... Contrast. The P3 paints are nice colours and good for two brush blending but I don't think they are so hot on glazing.

Also, the P3 set is a set of fantasy colours so I wondered if I should get another fantasy set or if it's better to get the normals. But I read on here that the fantasy set is better quality, paint-wise?

In either case I'll be getting the inks and metallics. I just wondered which of the two core ranges is better.

Thanks a lot!

Welcome to our Asylum away from Home!

I have been using the Scale color paints since September, and just got the Fantasy&Games stuff in January.

The Scale colors tend to be thicker, and require more thinning than the F&G line. This is NOT true of the metallics! They are along the lines of the F&G and require much lest thinning.

That said, they are the absolute finest acrylic metallics I have used in 30+ years of painting minis!

Personally, I find that I use the Scale Color more, as they are set up as basically one color, and therefor have my shades, high lights etc in one set, as opposed to the F&Gs...

I am branching out and using the F&G as I find a need....

DECAY BLACK is phenomenal!

I have 'heard' that they will be switching to the F&G formula in the future, but have seen nothing to say this is so...

There are also more colors in the SC sets, and you can buy most of them as singes...

I don't personally think one is 'better' than the other, so I guess it depends on your actual color choices!

Again, Welcome!

Post pics SoonTM

And don't worry about us, our sanity is growing every day!

Thanks for the answer and the warm welcome. I'll surely post some pics when I have something to show. I'm getting back into the hobby after a long hiatus and I sold all of my stuff last year as after about 20 years in the hobby I felt I did t know what I was doing it for any more...

However, as Michael Corleone said 'Just when I thought I was out...'

So I, going back into it but mixing things up. I only dabbled with the P3s before, basically my paint station used to contain Citadel and Vallejo Model paints, using Winsor Newton brushes.

I decided if I want to get back into it, I needed to mix things up and push myself out of my comfort zone so it's Raphael brushes now, P3 paints and the store I'm getting all my tools and stuff from (PK Pro, great guys) has good deals on the scale 75 sets (I get them VAT free living in Asia).

I do like how the SC sets are set up in terms of 'progressive' shades and highlights and also that there are more colours.

I'm about a week away from ordering everything (though I already ordered the P3) and so about three weeks from receiving everything...

So, as I understand it, the SC sets are good for glazing/blending? Because this is how I tend to paint? Another reason I went for P3 was their supposed formulation for good two brush blending (which I want to try) but if I wanted something to switch back into my traditional glazing method, the SC range would be good?

I also read on here that the SC paints don't 'play well' when mixed with paints from other ranges?

Welcome to the forum, and back to the hobby.

To be honest I have mixed SC paints (both lines) with my reaper and foundry paints with no problem.  I guess it depends on your aims.  Most paints and colors have there variations, I don't mind mixing and I tend to thin my paints with only water till I get the color and consistency that I want.  Some are color are more opaque than others, but I think that is the nature of the colors most of the time.  Granted, I have only mixed a few and fairly recently.  So your and others results may vary from mine.

Thank you for the answer and welcome.

I guess the vibe I'm picking up is that in any case, the paints aren't a bad thing to have.

I *think* I'll go for the SC regular range rather than the fantasy, largely because the P3 range is set out to be a fantasy range in itself and I might benefit from having some more muted tones.

So, I'll go for the SC big box, the three metallics set and the inks set... Unless someone can convince me different about the fantasy stuff?

To be honest, I'm not intimidated by the idea of using mediums or watering down and if that's what you have to do to get the SC colours to work then that's no problem. I'm one of those weird people who likes watering down and spending more time than is strictly necessary doing everything so it's fine by me. :)

I think they are great paints but if you already have a full p3 set you aren't really going to find anything here you don't already have. I can support the shades of doom and scale color flesh set fully. The rest of just try a few colors that you think you are missing.

I have found in the past though that the P3 paints are a bit funny to glaze with?

As I said, I wanted the SC to try some glazing and stuff and some P3 to get into wet blending.

Do you really think it's not worth it? From the point of view of the standard SC colours, not the fantasy?

I don't think it's worth for a couple reasons. Color is the primary concern in paint. The paint name or company name is not as important. And if you buy enough bottles of paint you will start to see the same color called by another name in many different brands. Sometimes the same brand. As I paint more I'm also much more Ken on mixing to achieve nuance in my painting and harmony. The great Jedi philosopher ben komets can achieve wonders with only a few colors so I started trying to limit my palette and it's been very healthy for my painting growth. Unfortunately I already bought a ton of paint. But anyways scale color are good paints. The metallics are really sweet.

For Scale paints I only have the fantasy line and I use it all the time.

I super thin my paints and use them as glazes. The fantasy paints when super thinned will seperate and you will need to mix them back together occasionally, but all the paints I have do that so eh.

I like the colors in the fantasy line since I tend to paint dead things and halloween like things. I use them more than any other paints now.

That and the vampire skin triad from Reaper :)

I have actually found the advice, notably from Silvervane in here, quite useful.

As I've already got a full set of P3 paints on the way (which are a decent set by most accounts) then another full set would be overkill.

I've come to something of a compromise and decided to stick with the P3s but get hold of the three alchemy metal sets and the ink set to compliment.

I think it's a better idea.

Also, The tip on my Arctic Blue Split near the tip....

Don't really know why, unless the tip was clogged....

So I am going to start poking all the tips before I use them.....

I did drill pretty small holes when I first got the unsealed tips, maybe that is why?

They have not been outside or otherwise exposed to the elements....

George

My Arctic Blue has split near the tip as well.  Its the only one so far...
