Zombicide Season 1 Walker 1

I finished this guy in May, just getting around to pics... This is a pedestrian zombie aka Walker from Season 1 of Zombicide.

 

 

I hadn't really intended on such a limited palette with him, but as I was painting the skin I started roughing in the shirt and liked where it was going. The greens are Olive Shadow through the Undead Skin triad with some white mixed into the top end. Hair and pants were Red Shadow highlighted with some of the greens and deepest shaded with a touch of Walnut.

 

Here's a shot of him next to a warmer example to highlight the limit of his palette. Really fun projects!

I like the shot with the two of them; looks like the big guy is asking him to dance or showing him around, or something.

Again, really liking your choice and work on the skin colours for this and its a great way to help distinguish between the Zombie types.

Thanks, it wasn't really planned. But it might be a nice thing to help assembly line any if I get teh gumption to paint up the box. Unlikely, though.

 

Forgot to mention I re-used palette colors for both bases to keep things nice and cohesive.

Beautiful work! I have yet to see any Zombicide miniatures 'in the flesh', so I'm kind of wondering if they are this nice or if it's your skill that raises them to this level. Are you painting in highlights and shadows that exist as detail in the sculpt (like the creases on the thin guys tank top), or are you creating these effects with your brushwork? How do you think these minis would look with just a base coat and a wash?

 

Seeing your paint job, I think this looks like an absolutely perfect zombie miniature but I honestly didn't think the minis were this high quality, so I'm curious!

@ Trodax: it is mostly Cash's skill that raises them to this level. They are nice minis...but not as nice as he makes them look.

I have a bunch I'm planning on painting a bunch ( because 24 zombies for under 20$ is a good deal) and then people can compare the results from different skill levels.

I really like this. I was shooting for a look similar to this on the last zombie I painted, but then I got sidetracked by Con exclusive paints and ended up using greens and purples.

While I appreciate the compliments, a lot of what makes these paint jobs easy is the sculpt. Your main enemy with these is the casting, it's Chinese plastic, so you gets what you pay for. That said, the sculpting is detailed and dynamic (as usual, I wish they were available in a high quality medium!). I pretty much don't clean them up at all or fix anything, though I do try to cover miscasts a bit with paint. If you look at the older survivors I painted a while ago, the faces are pretty messed up and on Ned and Flo there were major miscasts on their guns. I think the undead models suffer less, because they're already messed up, being, you know, dead.

 

But the creases in the shirt, the striations in the musculature, that's all sculpt. I just used some contrast to feature it. Part of why they're so fun to paint!

 

If you google 'zombicide walker' you can see a ton of unshaded or dipped tabletop hordes that look good.

The walker reminds me of Left4Dead, it uses a moody, cool filter to keep the atmosphere gloomy, and this guy sets off my "this is a movie where everyone dies" visual cues just by looking at him.

 

Gloomy, morbid, sad.

Thanks for the Zombicide info and links Cash! Just last night I was actually looking around for nice modern zombie minis for an RPG game. Studio Miniatures has a lot of fun stuff, but seeing how you painted these up has me thinking I should maybe just get one of the Zombicide boxes instead!

I picked up a bunch of Zombicide minis during all the Kickstarter madness, and despite my very haphazard attempts at getting them all painted up, I think the figures themselves presented a fairly nice level of detail to work with, and they look pretty decent on the table next to my other zombie minis.  They're pretty close in scale to Reaper's Chronoscope minis, but have slightly more realistic proportions, so the regular walkers can end up looking "smaller" even though they have about the same head height.  I'm just fine with that, in any case.

 

I noticed that some of the "hero" minis had some fairly weak details on them -- especially the female characters -- but I'm reminded of similar issues I had with the first wave of Bones.  It's nothing that a little creative painting can't help with.

 

Tangent:

I still have quite a few zombies to paint, but I think I'm going to take a detour and focus on something else a friend of mine brought in from the latest Zombicide Kickstarter: DOORS!  That is, modern-ish standing door markers, with frames, and standing bases, and a hinge so they can snap open or closed, with various types that can be inserted (transparent "glass" store doors, brown "wooden" house doors, barred doors, and others).  If I'd known about that, I'd have asked him to buy an extra set so I could paint and keep some for myself.  :)  I'll probably get much more use out of those than I will out of anything strictly zombie-apocalypse related.  (It's a bit embarrassing when I end up using door stand-ups from "Doom the Board Game" or "Space Hulk" and try to pretend that those could possibly represent modern-day doors.)
