Bones Kickstarter #3 Discussion

I think I may need to back my pledge off. I'm keeping it at $300 for now, because that's my budget, and I want to help unlock, but I think realistically, at this point, I'll only be in for $84, which is sad, and half of that is paint. I like a lot of the sculpts, and hate being a wet blanket, but most of the minis this time are so niche they will just never get used, or are just more PCs, and I just don't think I need any more PCs.

Sort of a bummer to me. I hope we see more generic useful stuff soon, and not just "things to fill in holes in your collection you didn't know you had".

Bones I and II had a lot of "generic useful stuff" and while I'm sorry to say this, we have to expand and grow our line in responsible ways. That means increasing and expanding the *variety* of offerings, not simply the *quantity*. That means as things progress, more and more niches are found, and exploited. So yeah, it means you aren't going to get the hordes of zombies skeletons and stuff. We have fewer orcs and goblins. But how many different Orcs do you think we have to have in the line? We don't think that adding as many as are already in the line again, just because this is a Kickstarter, is a great idea from a sales and line stability standpoint.

Totally agree, and totally understand. I think it's absolutely a natural thing that had to happen, but I also think that's probably what will ultimately hold this KS back compared to the first two (not to say this isn't successful already, clearly it is).

Obviously, not everything I want is going to be something that everyone else wants and others will consider niche (more not-skaven, more dark elves, more similar things with multiple poses (the lizardmen are great, I just don't think I can justify the core with them, though we're very close to tipping me into core territory already)), so I get it. And trust me, I want to spend my budget.

As a huge undead fan, I was excited to see the undying lords, but realistically, I'll use one of those minis more than once, and maybe throw the halfling skeleton into one of my KOW units for gits and shiggles, so I might as well wait until retail. I dunno, maybe I'll come up with uses for the others.

Like I said, trying not to be a wet blanket, but I would like to see more 'regular' stuff (though totally understand it dilutes the product line in the wrong way and might not happen).

EDIT:

RE: K+L - I think this model should probably appeal to fantasy wargamers. Things mounted on dragons are popular choices for generals and heroes.

Like many others I will be very disappointed if we don't get to see a lovely 5-headed dragon before this is over!  I've already arranged with the hubby that we can paint it together, since the individual heads are different colors and don't have to match each other.  I can't wait!!

Hopefully things pick up again soon, because my poor little mind needs the distraction of our daily goal unlock!  ^_^

My fiancee and myself have only been playing DnD for a few months. We have bought a few minis for her to paint and test, and she is doing awesome. These have been a great test for the Bones KS and we had pledged 100 so far. We are both convinced it is well worth it to get two sets of the core. So we increased the pledge to 200 for now.

What we will likely do is either get two cores, or spend the second 100 on add ons.

But I have to say, for a new person that still plays DnD with poker chips and dice as tokens this KS is a godsend. I don't care that I am not getting my minis for another year. I am looking forward to the box showing up eventually!

something i don't get:

wouldn't it be better to show rewards in such format:

1 million: unlock X, Y, Z  & for addition $10, A, B, C  $15  E, F, G, etc

2 million: unlock  ... etc.

For example, i have just pledged $1 as i dont want the core set. (i got core set from Bones 1 and 2...sold 1, but still have most of Bones 2 and can't seem to find a buyer..even at huge discount :( :(  )...From 2, for example, i just wanted the big stuff near the end and the demons, devils.

If I could see what potential higher end options there are, i would raise my $1 to, let's say 75 or whatever it works out as.

Wouldn't that cause an immediate increase as people modify their pledges and then we can see where funding actually lands?

Regards,

Sanjay

And what is the fun in that?

The reason why Kickstarter is so cool, is that you have a good time talking about with other backers and forum members, trying to guess what is coming next, pleading for your choices of what you want, help another to get in to the hobby.

I meant, This is all about the bass fuzz. Not only to Reaper make money to the next miniatures, but to make this a great experience for those who like it.

You could always came back in about 10 days and see what is on and arrange your pledge accordingly. But you will miss the trip.

And this is everything about the "walking the path" as it is about "the goal'.

In my opinion.

It's something every single DM knows is important: pacing.

If I tell my players in advance that they are going to face off tonight against monsters XYZ, or if I let them discover them one at a time, they will always find the second option more engaging and exciting. Even if they would sometimes as for option 1.

The simple truth is; we humans often don't actually know what we want. We just think we do.

Reaper is using Kickstarter to fund the creation of the molds to make these minis.  Those molds cost a lot of money to make but once you have the mold then Reaper  can make the actual Bones minis for a low price.  Since Reaper doesn't know how much they can spend they don't know how many molds they can afford and therefore how many minis they can make available.

If I remember correctly from the two previous Kickstarters, Reaper's research on other projects' histories has shown that it is better to reveal only a little at a time. Projects that show everything have some trouble funding. Also, it allows Reaper to switch goal order as demand changes.

A few reasons.

1. Reaper is moving around stretch goals behind the scenes, moving bigger ticket items up as needed to create a bigger draw.

2. Some molds cost more than others.  For every cheap 10k mold, there's likely to be a 75k-100k mold cost (bigger models generally).  It's part of the reason this kickstarter moved quickly up the difference between stretch goals in the first million was to create a buffer for the more expensive molds even when most of the models were likely cheaper.

2a. If they get a big enough buffer, you can likely expect 10-20k stretch goals in the last 48 hours as they eat into the buffer to get excitement rolling.

3. If you saw a particular model you wanted was 2 million dollars away, would you actually pledge for it, or would you come back.  If there's no chance of having something new to look at, it's less likely you'll come back to see if your 'must have' has been unlocked.

DMing is very different from a kickstarter, considering budgeting also matters.  Easier for many people to know earlier what costs they may need to account for.  For example, if i know now i need to get $200 for this, that's fine; i may be able to sell some stuff before the end of teh campaign.  But if i find that out with a few days left, that's a bit annoying.

Generally, i try to not use savings for hobby stuff - if i want something, i usually sell something i dont care about to account for it.

Right now, sold so much stuff, don't have a lot left that i dont want :)

to poster above: i always check on it.  I guess difference compared to most: i only care about the larger more impressive pieces (and a few things for the epic campaign i DM -- most of the core stuff i dont need or want)

hence i'm selling it.

You should find a way to get people to email them to you, or post links to the pics on sites that aren't blocked...

The latter would only work if they were posted to news sites - mobile news sites, at that. =/

Similarly, emailing them to me would have to go without the pictures - which defeats half the point. Bandwidth issues, or so they say...

I agree that the Reaper Kickstarter should have more coverage from major news outlets. Each of them should have a story every day or two until the end. Front page.

My humble opinion is that if everythign was shown at the very start, people would pledge and then leave in the first days, and the rest of the campaign would stagnate and possibly never reach the extent it would if things were shown separately

I know for me at least, i often look over what's available. Some things, the more I look at them, the more I decide i like them and will up my pledge for that. But if I come the first day, quick glance over stuff, pick up what i want and go...i wouldn't pledge as much. And then the totals wouldn't be as high, and some of the things you want to pledge for would actually not get unlocked. That's cause quite a bit of mess.

They can't really say 'here is everything' when they don't know how high the total will be. If they show everything they potentially have planned, and they don't get the funding for some of it, then they'll upset more people.

i think this strategy works, it's done well for the past 2 kickstarters at least. And this way, they can listen to backer feedback, get an idea of what's really wanted, and shuffle goals accordingly

Trust the Reaper. Believe the Reaper. The Reaper is your friend.

What? Paranoia? Nooooo I have never played that. Nope! I like minis! Paint the minis! Precious minis!

Serious note: Reaper has done their homework. The KS is following their expected trend. It is already successful. Don't want the core? You don't have to get it, just get the parts you want.

Trust Reaper! Reaper is your friend!

      Goblins!
So awhile back I was horrified to discover that some old un-finished minis had sprouted a strange orange mold. I gave them a deep clean and seemed to have solved the issue (spoiler: I did not and it's affecting nearly all my minis... but that's a problem for another time).

As a reward for enduring the cleaning, these goblins deserved to finally get painted.

      Goblin Command (77349)
First up are these two baddies from one of the Bones 2 expansion sets.

These guys, being earlier bones, are a bit on the rough side, and definitely out-of-scale with the others. But that does help them stand out a bit.

      Goblin Warriors (77444)
Next up, we have our "heavy hitters" from Bones 3.

I like these sculpts a lot better. There's a uniformity in the face structure, while still having individuality between models.

      More Photos Below Spoiler:

      Goblin Skirmishers (77445)
The final batch of wimpier goblins from Bones 3.

These guys are the mookiest of mooks. Poorly armed, and poorly armored. These are the guys that get sent in first to soak up some arrows.

      More Photos Below Spoiler:

It's nice to finally have some painted goblins. Though my bag full of 50+ more unpainted goblins still taunts me.  I have plans to paint them in a few different shades from the yellow-green used here, to a fleshy yellow-tan, to a pale fleshy-grey.  Hopefully that'll break up the duplicates and add some variety.  But that's a future project.

After painting all these guys up I am tempted to finish the set with the Goblin Honor Guard.  They're the only ones I don't have. I can't see myself getting much use out of them, as they're a bit more situational or decorative than practical. But my completionist brain says I need them.

Reaper has so many incredible and different goblin sculpts.  Which ones are your favorites?

And a third NPC - his day job is boatswain, so I wanted the armor to not be full plate.... he's currently helping the party do a fetch quest for the captain. I'm pretty satisfied with what I got out for what I put in - but I do notice I seem to have forgotten his eyebrows!

      From Bones 3: Gug

"It was a paw, fully two feet and a half across, and equipped with formidable talons. After it came another paw, and after that a great black-furred arm to which both of the paws were attached by short forearms. Then two pink eyes shone, and the head of the awakened gug sentry, large as a barrel, wabbled into view. The eyes jutted two inches from each side, shaded by bony protuberances overgrown with coarse hairs. But the head was chiefly terrible because of the mouth. That mouth had great yellow fangs and ran from the top to the bottom of the head, opening vertically instead of horizontally."
