Dracolisk, 03703 and 77379 Side by Side

I just finished putting the final touches on the camel and need a break from sculpting for a bit, so I went though my mound of minis and chose the Dracolisk to paint in the next few weeks.  It dawned on me that I have this model both in metal and bones, so I prepped both of them and will paint them together.

 

I am going to use two different techniques on them to achieve what should be a similar paint job.  On one, I will be starting with my shadows and highlighting up.  This is the technique I've used for years and am very comfortable with it.  For the other, I'll start with a mid tone, glaze in the shadows and then bring up the highlights.  I tried this for the first time on the Wyvern I painted last spring and really started to like it; however, it is still new to me.  I want to use these models as a test of the two techniques to see if I can see a difference in the final products, and if one technique has an obvious advantage.

 

As usual, I'll try to run this hour by hour, but that will likely get muddled in the middle, especially as I try to keep up with shooting two minis.

Basecoated the metal dracolisk today.  It was all grainy, the surface was like sandpaper because something went wrong with the primer.  It was rather hot out when I sprayed it, and I think it partly dried before it hit the mini. I painted it anyway, thinking I might live with it, but on a second look, I decided to strip it.  It is downstairs soaking in the Simple Green right now.

 

I almost never strip minis; anyone know how long I need to leave it in the Simple Green?

Usually overnight. If particularly stubborn, 24 hours is sufficient in nearly all cases.

If it's an acrylic primer, overnight should be sufficient. I have some soaking that had a Rustoleum primer on them, and it's tough to get off.

I used Army Painter Spray.

Overnight should be fine...sacrifice an old toothbrush to scrub at it.

You can also use a Dremel tool with a wire brush to buff the figure and help clean under scales etc. Just don't jam the wheel into the mini hard!

Read the Army Painter website and it looks like I was holding the can too far from the mini.  That's weird because I've been using spray primer for 25 years and Army Painter for the last 5 with no issues.  I think the difference though was that I tried to use it out in the sun and summer heat, instead of in my basement like I usually do.
