I love it, but I am still trying to rationalize the beard.

Because you need no justification for the pointy little hat and his spectacles....

Sure. He can just be wearing those.

ahhh!  but who says the beard is real!!!   It could just be a disguise so he can pratice some new spells that might have unkown/dangerous side effects and the beard would hide his true identiy form the villagers...or at least he thinks that!

Gandalf and Suraman was one poof away from a frog???? :blink:

They were told to clothe themselves in mortal flesh so humans and elves would trust them. This wizard trusted the innocence of a child to guide his decision. He asked a kid what they liked best and he said frogs! So the choice was made.
