Can anyone suggest an algorithm for processing an image in Paint Shop Pro v8 that results in an image of 150 kB or smaller?

I'm cropping images down to the bare bones, and end up shrinking the pics down to squint-size and reducing the colors nigh to posterization in order to reach the 150k window. Other folks are getting by just fine, so I presume that I've missed a few tricks.

Well, if yer shooting for the web, 640x480 or 800x600 is big enough... I mean, what good is a 2000x3000 image when most monitors top out at 1280x1024? :)

So resize your image to that ( irrespective of cropping ).

Then crop.

Then use a quality setting on Jpeg compression of around 75-85%. This gives a small size, and the file takes up very little room. My 640x480 images top out around 60k, and are plenty big on my monitor at 1280x1024.

Unless you plan on printing the photo out on a printer on fancy gloss photo paper, 2000x3000 at 95% quality is just WASTED on the web, or any other computer medium.

resize image to around 800x600 or less, save at 75% quality, and you should be set.

( My 1200x1776 images take up only 294k, but they are very large and made for ad copy. I don't plan on putting them on the web unless I shrunk them down ).

The image doesn't have to be under 150k, the file size with JPEG compression does. A lot of the images in Showoff are 400x600 pixels or about 700k at a resolution of 72 but when saved as a JPEG in medium compression they are 150k or less.

I' m not familiar with Paint Shop since I use PhotoShop but you should be able to save as JPEG and select the degree of compression you want to create the necessary file size.

I use PSP 7. I order to reduce the size try resizing the picture once you crop it to where you want it. It works rather well. In version 7 it's located under Image. You should be able to select the % you want to reduce it by. If you are not satisfied you can simply undo and try again. Hope this helps.
