im not even sure why I dropped out originally but left a 1$ pledge.  so still getting updates.

I wonder if i posted my reasoning in this thread....

It's kind of coincidental that he's worried about getting into debt with a baby on the way, because that's why I cancelled my pledge in the first place.

The KS fees do look high

but he could well be baking in other 'off the top' fees into them such as payment processing fees, fees for a pledge manager (did he use a paid one like backerkit/crowdox ?) and maybe currency conversion or tax

they way its written looks more like a 'this is the money I had to spend' than an actul precise accounting

Has Nick Ryan communicated at all on this lately?

If it's a failed project, admitting so would probably be better for IdyllWild's reputation than going completely silent.

So as everyone knows, we need about $15,000+ to complete the project (even after paying around $50,000 to this factory already). I've been turned down for loans, but I'm working with someone that might be able to help. If that doesn't come through I'll have to just save up money for a long time and eventually finish this project, WHICH I WILL.

Cost break down --> August Update

I thank most of you guys for being encouraging and positive however a few leave comments on the Idyllwild Games social media, send personal messages, phone calls to my place of work and send emails that are very saddening:
1. I am not a con-man... the factory is over charging me and this is out of my control.
2. There is nothing I want more than to be done and finished with this project.
3. If it takes 2 more years, you will all get all your rewards.
4. Any other games I'm selling on the idyllwildgames.com website are either handmade or funded by my own income to produce funds to complete THIS project. I didn't spend a dime of Dark Age Outpost money on anything but THIS project.

Ask yourself this, if I was a scam artists, why would I pay for $50,000 worth of molds, show everyone the molds, show the test injections and then not finish the project? I simply do not have the funds to complete the mass production of the products, and the factory wants the money up front.

The next update will be to inform you if I secured the funds to complete the project or not.

-Nick

If you also read the August cost breakdown update, you will notice his story not adding up reguarding how much money he received!

"IMPORTANT REMINDER: Kickstarter takes a huge chuck for fees before giving you the funds. Out of $93,000 raised, I only got back about $70,000. So basically we are out of money here, especially if you add money needed for shipping (to me and then to YOU). I've been trying to work something out. Thank you all for being patient."

It may do (or it may not), certainly the shorthand 'KS takes a huge chunk' isn't accurate

but fees are not just going to be for KS but also payment processing (about 8-10% for the two), failed transactions (often running at about 10% of the pledged sum), and since he's not based in the country where the funds were collected bank transfer & currency conversion fees (and ,maybe taxes on that money) the latter will tend to be higher if you're a new creator who doesn't really know what your doing whereas experienced businesses may be able to mitigate them

Wow that's so much worse than I expected.

TLDR

Admitting to embezzling money (10,000$). Definitely will not be purchasing/backing Menhir Games anything. Claiming that changing factories upped the cost from 90,000 to 150,000 so it was sunk early on.

Just a reminder about how unqualified many people are at doing what they are doing.

Does anyone remember a change in factories? So long ago I don't. That would've been a time to explain things.

I had high hopes for this project. The concept is great, and I had backed a couple of their miniature projects and been very happy with the results.

I have backed many failed kickstarters over the years. There have been many reasons for the failures (usually just people with big dreams but not much business sense) but this has to be a first.

Apparently our funds disappeared up an Argentinian directors nose.

I thought, until the last update, that Nick had a case of he said / she said with the injection mold company. Could have been a change in companies, I also forgot.

Latest update was that his partner, whatzisname of Menhir Games, used 10K for another project.

I usually put a cap on how much money I put into a project, including shipping, depending on the creator's experience and existing retail presence. For me, it's $50 for First Created, $75 with some experience, and any amount for a company with retail experience, though I usually pledge at the cost-effective base level. This hasn't kept me from losing money, but keeps me losing *more* money on a project. Nowadays, announcements of upcoming KS keep me from the FOMO impulse purchases. Likewise, I'm seeing more base game boardgames on sale at half the price of the pledge plus shipping.

EDIT: Of course, thanks to KS, holiday sales, and the FLGS game flea markets, I have *way* too many boardgames to play and miniatures to paint. That keeps me out of trouble, too... :upside:
