have any of your larger bones began to bend from gravity?

Recommended Posts

I boiled and re-set a smaller figure. No problem with the paint. I expect that hot-not-boiling water will present no threat to paint or glue.

It seems some sagging is a limit of the material. Doesn't worry me, as I would never, and will never, have the money to buy these guys in metal. It will mean I have to put some consideration to pinning, posing, and basing.

Yeah, but I suspect that hot water just won't cut it when it comes to resetting larger pieces.  And I can see where having to boil off a top quality paint job on a large fig that is collapsing under it's own weight six months after purchase is going to turn a lot of people off the product.  I'm currently holding off on painting most of my bigger miniatures until I've engineered ways to reinforce them.

I have a very awesome storm giant that may be suffering from seasonal droopiness disorder as well.

The sword was very bent. And when I put brass rods, it still sagged back to it's original floppy self, despite my hot and cold meddling. It's too bad I didn't heat the rod though. That's good advice I didn't think of.

I bet I could have saved a lot of time heating it and stabbing it through while it was in place rather than using my precision hole drilling tool, which did a poor job.

Not exactly a large dragon, but the base of my pathfinder red would slowly fold until it fell over backwards even over the winter at 65 degrees in the house. No amount of boiling and setting did any good. Gluing it to something solid was the only solution.

I find that most large figures need extra basing and support work to stop them listing or even collapsing.

My khanjira base is not rigid nor strong enough to stop her from falling over backwards.

I had to make bases for all the ks2 dragons i bought, building up supports under the dragons original bases, and pinning them in places to keep them upright. I had to pin narthraxs tail to the base to make her stand up straight.

Sorry for those asking for pictures, I do not have any and this site is not picture posting friendly as far as straight uploads.  My large minis are not in my only AC room but room temp has been about 85 to 75 on average lately.  I have not painted them so maybe ai could heat them up in water to repose, but they are glued together and I am not sure if heating them will make limbs fall off.

What glue? Epoxy should not have any issue with water

I have noticed that some sculpts work a lot better in metal than they do in the bones rubber. Reaper really should have realized this before even kickstarter 1. The Griffon, for example, may not be one of the larger minis, but the pose is totally unsuitable for the soft bones rubber. Even when it's cooler all that weight improperly balanced on it's hind legs will cause it to tip forward. I haven't bought into the newer Kickstarters, but I really hope Reaper is learning from past mistakes.

So, I have just signed in here to report the same thing. Narthrax, instead of the imposing lifted wing now, now touches the table. His body, wings and legs are so bent that the left upper leg touches the rock where he's standing. The troll king, with those skinny legs is trying to rest his stomach in the base. I never thought the bones plastic would soften that much only because of hot weather. I do have to say that I live in Brazil, so, 35+ celsius are common, even in winter. (that would be 95 F for 8-9 months during the year).

I really want to get a Ma'al Drakkar from bones 3, saving money for it. But will those huge wings and heads survive their own weight? The heads I guess could be easily pinned, but curved wings will require something else... what to do?

I have noticed out of the two Narhrax minis I have displayed there is an issue with one but the other is fine and looks great.  I noticed the one that droops real bad now was already having some issues to begin with but since the daughter and niece painted them it has gotten worse while sitting up on the shelf.  They are not far off from each other so they get the same air flow from the vent not far away from them.  My guess is the one is just really bad because it was already a bit weak in places and drooping a little from the start.

Though large bones are really good deals, I think Reaper should address this issue for the KS3 miniatures and maybe propose a DIY solution for the already problematic ones. Ma'al Drakkar will be mine no matter what (asked for a Tianot too many times last 2 years to reject it now), but I`m still on the fence about adding some other big guys.

A little pinning takes care of that on most models, honestly. My griffon is perfect with just a few cm of rod in each leg that would have been there even if it were metal, they just would have been shorter.

I haven't had to pin my griffin at all. I have 2 more unpainted right now, one of which came out of the package bendy. Haven't had a chance to fix it yet. Most if not all of my Bones reside in the basement year round (unless I take them to a game of course)...

Re: the big dragons. I got Stormwing wa-ay back in the day, back when Bones was just a fevered dream of the Reaperpeeps, and it will never leave my house. I got the Bones version of Blight Fang, and the material makes it perfect for taking it to someone else's house for gameday. I suppose if you just paint for the hobby of it, and never use figures in games, the metal might be the way to go. But since I have to transport mine, and they must stand up to gaming and handling, Bones for larger figures is the only way to go for me, IMHO.

Damon.

Hi! I was just wondering if there were any reaper dragon minis close in size to the young green wizkids dragon? or any other dragons of any types that's not wizkids that's similar in size? I'm wanting to run an encounter with two dragons of the same size and would prefer not to double up on minis, and would love to expand my dragon collection to other companies than wizkids.

Most of these aren't up to date and I've changed bits of them here and there since these, I'll be saving those shots for the finished product, but hopefully you enjoy the journey.

is that true though?  why wouldnt it be huge if the base determines that?

Wizkids, who does the official D&D models (in line with the models from GF9 that are also official) have a line of dragons coming, starting in dec/jan, that they said are their new gargantuan dragons and described them as properly sized or something .
Here's a pic of the first, the white:

Buckle in folks, I've got a lot for you today.  Over the past year or so I've slowly collected and painted a set of the five Chromatic Dragons.  When I first started collecting minis I'd picked up a couple of Dragons from Safari Ltd which were easy to find at craft stores.  Rather than buy a bunch of new models from Reaper or elsewhere, I decided to see if I could make a unique set of Dragons using mostly Safari Ltd models.  I flipped through my Monster Manual and browsed online catalogs and slowly picked out models that I wanted to use to represent each of them.  I eventually ran out of models that I liked and I supplemented a McFarlane Toys dragon for the Red.  I finally completed them early this past summer:

      The White Dragon

      Read on for More:

      The Black Dragon
Moving up the Chromatic Hierarchy, we have the Black Dragon, represented here by the Safari Ltd. Cave Dragon.  This is actually the model that inspired me to paint up the dragons, as it looked so much like the 5E Black Dragon artwork.

      Read on for More:

      The Green Dragon
Next up, we have the Green Dragon represented by the Safari Ltd. Twilight Dragon.  Funnily enough, that sculpt is also available in a green variant as the "Forest Dragon," but i already had the black copy on hand.  It was all getting painted over anyways.

      Read on for More:

      The Blue Dragon
The last of the Safari Ltd. Dragons, this is the Fog Dragon, which got a tiny bit of green stuff to look the part of a Blue Dragon.

      Read on for More:

      The Red Dragon
I used up the biggest Safari Ltd Dragon with the blue, and I wasn't seeing anything I liked from any of their direct competitors, so I chose something a little different for the Red.  I ended up with the Komodo Clan dragon from McFarlane Toys Dragons Series 2.  And though this guy showed up in shades of red, I wanted to paint it myself, so it got primed and re-painted.

      Read on for More:

It was a lot of fun painting up these guys, and I like having a unique collection.  I'm also glad they're all done.  Though I do still have a Shadow Dragon and a Dracolich primed and waiting for paint... and then all the dragons that are still boxed... and then that big five-headed guy I keep meaning to get around to... and then all those new dragons coming with Bones 5...

Which dragon do you like best?
