DDS 2 Tower (Finished!)(+ Work in Progress)

Hey all!

My DDS 2 came in the mail today, and I pulled out the tower to look at it. Boy does that stuff feel weird to an guy who has pretty much only done metal, with some resin here and there!

 

So, what kind of Glue does one use to assemble the tower????

I read Wren's post that super glue was best, but this material makes me wonder...

Is this most people's experience?

 

Also, do most folks base the whole this as a piece, or leave them separate?

Super Glue is the way to go.  As for basing or separate, yes. All up to individual preference.

If the parts fit tightly, regular super glue will be fine. If the parts fit loosely or have significant gaps, you may want to opt for the gap-filling gel super glue.

 Superglue is going to work fine as long as the parts fit together well.

I used gel super glue on mine and there was a warp in one piece that I corrected when by gluing. Still holding together as it should.

Mine was really warped so I boiled and dunked in ice water until it held shape.  Then used gel super glue.  Still holding.  I keep parts separate except for the parts  meant to be glued.

I used the gel super glue, did it about an inch or two at a time, and had my daughter spray the quik dry on it. then a little more glue etc. Still holding. I then green stuffed the thing, and that seems to be holding up as well.

Is super glue the best thing to stick them to an MDF base? I noticed some minor gaps in between pieces, and I have started cutting mdf to match the bottoms of each piece, and plan to have them all fit together like a puzzle when I need them to.

So, my daughter the paint minion and I have been busy with this over the past couple of nights.

 

The upper tower was super glued and Green Stuff crammed in the gaps:

 

 

This evening we glued the pieces to mdf board that I had cut out with a coping saw.

 

 

Don't know how well you can see it, but there  are places where the bones don't match up, but the mdf does. This is going to be cured by some white glue and sand. I am also going to seal the edges of the mdf. I have a bottle of  'Ardcoat, that I bought thinking it was something else, and was wondering what people thought of it as a sealer for mdf. Is there something better? After it is sealed and the sand is glued where it needs to be, then the grey liner is going on.

 

Going to test it through the airbrush, see if it will spray straight, or if I need to cut it...

Any thoughts on what with?

 

I also plan on putting 2 or 3 pins into the top of the 'tower' part, with matching holes for the top piece, so that it is more stable. I don't want to glue the top down if I can avoid it...

Okay, got a little excited and ahead of myself...

Deep Breath...

 

It was time to prime my tower!

But this is the first Bones item that I am working on...

I like to use spray on primers, as I like the even coverage that I get from them. I use P3 white and black, depending on what I am painting. BUT I tested a little primer on the bottom of a Bones base to see if it would work. At first I thought it did, alas, it became tacky, so that Idea went into the trash.

I had read all the info on primers for Bones, and bought some Grey and Brown Liners. (Thanks *Buglips*!)

I use my Grex Genesis airbrush to do large areas when I can thin the paint so it will flow well, but I could not find any informatin on what to use to thin the liners for airbrush use.

I waffled a bit about it, as the liner is to thick in my opinion to use un thinned.  So I cut Reaper Grey Liner with Windsor&Newton Flow Improver and water mix at about 2 parts paint to mix.

I sprayed the test mini, (89006: Seoni, Iconic Sorceress) that I used to test the primer, and it seemed to work quite well. An hour later, I flexed everything I could flex to see if the liner cracked or flaked, and nothing happened. IT WORKED!!!!

Put a quik dab of paint on the figures face to see how it would cover, and it was like painting over a regular primer.

I still had some paint left in the cup, so I grabbed the smallest of the tower parts and started spraying. After covering almost the whole thing, I realized I had forgotten to glue sand to the places where the MDF wasn't covered. So I put that down and grabbed the upper piece of the tower, and used up the rest of the paint.

 

 

(Yes that is Takhisis' body, legs and tail assembly ready for primer )

After cleaning the airbrush, I grabbed the sand and glue, and did the edges that needed it...

 

 

So Now I need to wait for the glue to dry, and then the airbrush will ride!

It's LOOKIN' GOOD! There's a LOT of potential in the pieces...as someone who makes his own terrain, at least a part of that potential is potentially fine ideas to steal. SO...keep up the INSPIRING WORK!

I almost finished up the liner last night. Only the olaces that I was holding still to be done, and a little more sand in some places. Then time to break out all the different Tamiya Greys that I have to finish the base coats on the stone. Browns on the 'dirt', and then washes drybrushes etc for weathering. Then flocks, grass tufts etc etc....

Maybe a Realistic Water puddle or 2...

That's the plan, anyway.

Friday    so tonight and 2 more days to see how far I can get!

I have to admit that I am quite impressed with the Grey Liner as a primer for bones!

I was worried that it would rub off as I handled it to get at places that I couldn't do the first time, needed a second coat, or, like the newly sanded places, needed to be blended in. My piece of mind was not helped by the fact that airbrush coats tend to be very thin and easily rubbed off.

I sprayed all the new sand, and the places that I had used as my handle last night, Plus the bottom of the upper tower.

After it all dried, I did a second coat over all. Then Takhisis, the hell hound,  and my exchange mini project took over my attention ....

 

So Here is where I am at, ready to start the actual painting....

Has anyone else noticed that there are 2 doorway / archways on the outside of the lower tower that don't show up on the inside?

First light airbrush coat of Tamiya Light grey with some black on. I tried to NOT cover any area to solid ly, about to shoot pics....

Then some more greys, again, trying to no coat any area to solidly. The idea is not to do individual stone blocks / pavers, but to have the whole look like different pieces of the same type of grey stone. Granite maybe?

Any particular mood you're going for? I'd say at least think about tinting it warm or cool, since neutral gray is so... well, neutral.
