Finally, my first attempt! (Pic Heavy)

Finally, I started working on painting my first miniature! I've tried starting since the Bones 3 Kickstarter, and I want to thank everyone for their encouragement. Let's see what I've done so far.

 

Wilson and Optimus!!!!!!!!!!!!!:

 

 

My sacrificial constructs, I learned a lot from these little things. I primed WIlson with Krylon Black Matte Paint+Primer and Optimus with Plaid Clear Matte Acrylic Sealer, both painted with FolkArt acrylic paints and  a size 0 Daler Rowney nylon brush. I learned a lot from them like some brush techniques and the importance of watering down thicker paints.

 

 

Now, my first Kobold figure:

 

 

I used the same black primer on this one. Had to strip it once because I sprayed it on a little too thick. Lesson learned.

 

 

First shot at painting:

 

 

Finally slopped paint on my first miniature. I painted this with Citadel Mephiston Red  and a 00 Winsor & Newton synthetic brush. I would have used a sable or sable/synthetic brush but because of Russia things, the hobby store I went to wasn't able to restock. Poopy. I learned to control how much paint should be on the brush and how my brush strokes affect where the paint gets applied. I deliberately chose a small figure instead of a standard size one purely to force myself to learn control and painting techniques that will help me with larger ones.

 

Now I need to decide if I should try lighter on the skin and if I should drybrush the new layer on, or if I should start painting the armor and accessories. Well, here goes nothing.

Its a good start.  As far as what to do next, its a personal preference.  Some folks like to paint one area or one thing/group of things (skin, armor, weapons, etc, etc) and some just jump from place to place.  Look forward to seeing your work come along on the model.

Nice start. On 28mm scale I tend to work skin out. Like dressing the miniature. That way if I get some skin tone on clothing or clothing color on armor, I don't care cause it'll get covered up anyway. You work how ever it's easiest for you. Also, I don't know bout others but I read the tags... :-)

Using the scrap sprues as a starting point to learn the paints was a really good idea; I'll have to remember that if I ever teach someone to paint.

 

Don't worry about lack of control, it will come with time.  Like "100 miniatures later" kind of time.  

 

I'd recommend getting your base colors on everything so you can get a rough idea of how the final version will work.  Don't worry about being neat so much, just get the primer covered up (think of it as the painting equivalent to a sketched drawing).  This lets you decide if you need to adjust any colors (or swap them out entirely) before moving on to cleanup and detail work.

Aaaaaagh, now you got me looking to see how many minis I have. Hmmmmm....., still got 26 Bones and 11 metal ones to paint. Will give me a good start when the Kickstarter avalanche falls upon me next year.

Looking good so far. Excellent idea to experiment on the Bones sprue, by the way. Don't be afraid to ask questions/for help, there are a lot of friendly people here who will be happy to answer.

Don't forget to have fun, that's the whole point of this, after all.

If you plan to dry-brush, especially metal, I would recommend starting with those areas. At least until you learn to control.Dry-brushing tends to be a bit messy.

No, no, this isn't about fun, it is an obsession that I must completely throw myself into, as it is a masochistic orgy of berating myself for making mistakes. It must be perfect. PERFECT, I SAY!

As others have said, awesome idea with the bits of sprue to learn your paints on

 

Personally, I like to get general colours on, and then refine from there - helps me work out if my colour schemes need to change and stuff nice and early on. That said, I've finished all of like three minis, so no doubt that'll change with me over time, haha. That, or do the darkest colours first, then your lighter bits

Yeah, I couldn't resist picking him up when I went to the store the other day. I'm thinking bright colors for him, like blues, yellows, and silvers, but I'm imagining contrasting that with giving him a grittier embattled look, like a paladin in shining armor that's been thrown into the hell of war.

Nice =] I have to order my Reaper minis, generally, so there's eons of umming and ahhing before I buy anything. 

 

But yes, that sounds amazing =] maybe some gold, but really antique it up? Curses, now I'm excited for your paint on him too!
