Good 1st effort! Save It, look at it, remember what you did that you liked, and do them again. Remember the things that didn't go right, and avoid them.

I still have the 1st mini I painted in 1976,

He is in the case of honor with my other Favorites!

Thank you for the support. I try not to see this as discouraging, I don't expect myself to be as good as Sirithiliel right away ( though I'm quite curious as to what her first figure looks like). I find that I'm encouraged by the things that went right, though I'm still not quite confident enough to start the highlighting yet. I think my next kobold will look a lot better than this one.

Though  a teeny bit of myself would like to indulge that tiny part of me that wants to go, " RAAAAAAAAGGGHHH!!!!!!!*shoves all the paints on the floor*"

Somehow I imagine this one being able to take on several adventurers at once who find him to be more of a match than they thought:

Again, I am using Citadel Mephiston Red for this one, though my Daler Rowney size 0 brush is starting to show signs of wear to it. A bit messy but that's quite alright, I'm getting better with the brush. For all of you new painters, don't worry about getting the paint where it shouldn't be, the most important thing right now is getting it to cover all of the areas that it should. This is just a base coat so you can paint over it, or touch things up later on. I find that working on the larger areas first and then going to the progressively smaller details tends to help the process.

I'm going to test out a bit of a different color scheme for this one, maybe give a hit of metallics. I've got a bit of a surprise in mind for some of the details later on as well.

My goodness! I've been painting so much that I've forgotten to take pictures of all the steps:

Yeah, it seems that it can be quite addictive once you get the ball rolling. I've used Citadel Ironbreaker and Runefang Steel for the blade, Hashut Copper for the crossguard, P3 Molten Bronze for the pauldron,, Ironbreaker for the rivets, P3 Bootstrap Leather for the shield, CItadel XV-88 for the leather straps, a 50/50-ish mix of GW Skull White and Enchanted Blue for the pouch, and I used Reaper Black Wash on the entire thing. I think it all turned out very well, I just have to do the nails and a few touch-ups. Quite proud of this, I have to say. Must remember the special thing for the eyes *wink wink*

Finally finished figure #2! Forgot to say that I used Citadel Ushabti Bone for the skull:

I'm glad that when I make a mistake, it doesn't show through when I paint over it. My biggest experiment was with the eyes when I used FolkArt Green Glow Paint.

But everyone should be afraid when the dark.............

Definitely shiny, but I'm going to do some touchups  to the base before I spray on some matte sealer. On this one I used Krylon Grey Paint+Primer to start with.

When it comes to primers, what ever works for you! I personally use P3 white and black. Just got some Reaper brush on for touch ups.

Gonna need it when I start assembling Her Evilness....

Thank you! Right now I'm going to hit up the base with a quick coat of black Staedtler acrylic paint, and after it dries I'm going to experiment with Plaid Clear Gloss Sealer, and then maybe one or two coats of the matte sealer. Unless you think that's too much?

As long as the matte takes care of the shiny, all good. People say that the gloss protects better than the flat, so for gaming figs, best to do it your way.

Glosscote and Dullcote are the only 2 that I use though....

Ah, once again my eternal dilemma. I want all of the shiny things. But..... I can't get all of the shiny things.
