What's on TV?

I'm watching Supernatural on Netflix. I'm halfway done with Season One.

 

Note: this is not my first time through, but I watched it sporadically and missed a lot in the middle years. This will be my first time seeing a good many episodes, but I do understand the coming metaplot involving Castiel and Crowley.

My wife and I finished off the first two seasons of "Witches of East End" (not sure if there'll be a 3rd season or not) and jumped into "The Originals" we are nearly done with season 1 with season 2 coming to Netflix next month most likely. We are thinking about checking out "Supernatural" next.

Here's another one I'm out alone on. Everybody loved the new BSG and raved about how awesome it was.

 

I watched the first season. It was ... good.  Not awesome. Not amazing. Not fantastic.  Good.  I don't understand the hype.

I watched the entire first season of Sense8 in one sitting and have now gone into mourning that there are no more episodes to watch. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did, especially since the first 2 1/2 episodes were really slowly paced (I loathe slow pacing - a show should end and have me going "What?!? Was that a shortened episode?!? How can it be over!?!" not checking the time halfway through wondering how they got the technology to squeeze 18 hours into 30 minutes.)

 

My bff and I have been enjoying Dominion - or, as we call it, "our silly angel show." It's on its second season now and even though it rides the line of really fun to watch and abysmally silly, it's on syfy so will probably go on for another 8 seasons. We all know how syfy rolls and good on them for it.

 

We've also been watching Dark Matter, which I would recommend. It's fun and silly without the abysmal added in. It was nice to have a show that I could comfortably recommend to my parents who are big scifi fans, but not in any way, shape or form interested in seeing anything intended for mature audiences (which doesn't bother me in the slightest.) I'm usually warning them away from shows, so it was a nice change to be able to say that they should watch this one.

 

We've just started on Humans, which has been excellent so far. All you have to say about a show is androids and I'm there.

 

I watched Fear the Walking Dead last night. Slow pacing (again, loathe) but it's a pilot and pilots are almost always poorly paced. I think it shows good potential - I'm excited about Kim Dickens being in it (loooooved her in Deadwood and Gone Girl) and Frank Dillane is seriously channeling Johnny Depp in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - I'm digging it. They're going to have trouble keeping their record breaking audience though if the next episode isn't better paced. I'm certain that they lost a good chunk based on the first episode alone.

 

I tend to fall really, really behind on shows. So I'm still in the midst of watching the latest seasons of House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Outlander and Hannibal. I'm sad to know that Hannibal's been cancelled, but being perfectly honest, the dialogue had gotten so tedious. It's fine for Hannibal himself to talk that way and I'll allow it from Will as well, but now it's every single character babbling cryptic poetry at me. I'm a fairly intelligent person and I've always had an appreciation for artistic expression in any form, but I can't follow half of what's going on anymore. I feel like I need Cliffs Notes at hand just to get through a single scene. Your audience shouldn't have to work so hard all the time. That being said, I would continue to watch it if they do find someone to pick it up and continue on with it, as I think that Bryan Fuller had a vision that I would be interested to see fully carried out.

I'm in the "good, not great" Battlestar camp, too. I watched pretty much the whole thing, years ago, with my brother--I get the appeal, but I guess it's mostly the pace that was a problem for me. Show could really drag.

 

Bought the first season streaming from Amazon, ~6 months ago, because I thought the wife would love it. We watched about six episodes, and it just kind of fizzled. I think I was enjoying it that time around more than she was. Eh.

I watched the BSG movie they made before they started the series and I remember really enjoying it. When the series started, I deliberately avoided it because I knew it was going to do well enough to survive, and I really didn't want to spend years waiting for the episodes to come out for the show to continue. I'd been through that misery with Buffy, didn't want it again. I'm OK with that now though, since I can't tend to marathon shows anyway, or at least not the ones I want. (Darn kids...) I haven't even started the series yet, just got the DVD set from my brother-in-law a few weeks ago.

 

For GoT, I watched about five minutes of one episode, and my reaction was basically "Wow, this is really well made, the writing is good, the acting is good, the visuals are stunning, it's got everything I should like, and I have absolutely zero interest in watching any more." It's not that I disliked it in any way! I just... it's about as interesting to me as watching paint dry. Wall paint, not paint on a mini. No idea why I reacted that way but it hasn't changed since. I'm thrilled that other people are digging the series, but for some reason it's just not for me.

 

Oooh... I just remembered what I need to watch - Orphan Black. I got about half-way through season 1 and then my PVR died (I'd recorded the whole season when it was marathoned on Space at one point and was working my way through) and I really, really need to get back to that.

 

I should also get back into Supernatural. I watched through to... season 6, I think? I really enjoyed it, I just lost track of it at one point.

I originally stopped watching Game of Thrones after the first season because it upset me so badly - I'd never heard of the books and knew nothing about it except for that it was a medieval tale starring my dear Sean Bean.... and then oh my goodness my beloved Harry Lloyd was in it too! Well...

So yeah, season one left me really upset and I didn't want to watch anymore. But after season two, my bff convinced me to give it another chance just with the caveat of not getting too attached to any of the characters. Once I got past that, I really do love the show quite a bit. One of the death scenes traumatized me really badly, like I think that I may have suffered from ptsd the week following it. I managed to cover my eyes for most of it but the sounds, ugh, I don't even like to think about it. It took me a few weeks to start back up again after that. I now let my bff get at least a week ahead of me so she can warn me about such things.

 

Supernatural....oh Supernatural. I used to love that show. It was funny and clever and just a really fun watch....and then, imo, they got cocky and stopped trying to make a good show because the fandom got so big. I even watched a whole additional season, hating just about every second of it until I finally had to drop it completely. I'll never go back to it. It was like an abusive significant other that kept apologizing

 

I'm a Battlestar Galactica fan. I love me some cylons. But I can see why some people couldn't hang with it because, again, it had the dreaded slow pacing. It was totally my "put it on tv while I do housework and just rewind a bit if I feel like I missed something important" show.

I found season 7 with the Leviathans is when my interest started to wane significantly, although there were a couple good episodes in there.  It seems to have got a little better again recently.

My daughter, of all people, turned me on to Supernatural, and it reminded me for all the world of a Chill campaign I ran back in college. I liked it a lot. It took a dip when Season 5 started, and I finally gave up on it come Season 7, as it has graduated from "fresh, new, spooky, interesting, and entertaining," to "Franchise Zombie."

Saw Fear The Walking Dead this past weekend, and was not hugely impressed. I'm very much hoping to see things get more interesting with the second episode.

 

Many years ago, George H. Scithers sent me a form letter explaining how to write short stories. He was a big proponent of "shoot the sheriff in the first paragraph." Give us a big blast of action, start the story in media res, and then carry it along from there.

Those of you who read the first issue or saw the first episode of Walking Dead know that the creators did exactly that: Rick, our protagonist and viewpoint character, (and a sheriff... or, well, a cop, anyway)  is shot within minutes of his introduction. We don't know him from Adam, but we sure didn't have time to get bored, or decide he was unlikable... and thus, the story carries us along. Fear The Walking Dead, on the other hand, felt like, as TV Tropes would put it, "Twenty Minutes With Jerks." Except it was more than twenty minutes.

I liked the idea of a ninety minute pilot, but not if the only interesting parts of it are going to be the first five minutes and the last twenty minutes, not counting ill-placed commercials. Bleh. The previews look interesting, but I have a horrible feeling they were spliced together out of the more interesting moments of the next two or three episodes... I was expecting a new and interesting take on "State, national, and civic authorities try to hold things together while arguing about what to do and how much to tell the public, and they quickly get in over their heads." What I got was more like ... I dunno, a very stony "special episode" of some family sitcom having a "Dangers Of Drugs" episode, but with a couple zombies thrown in for the hell of it. There have been zombies running around LA now for at LEAST 24 hours, and no one's NOTICED?

 

And if I'm going to care whether these people, this family, lives or dies, they're going to need to do a heckuva lot better than that, particularly considering there's only six episodes in this season. Come ON, people!

That's how they get you, Qwyksilver. 90% awful episodes with a few glimmers of hope here and there. Never again, I tell you. They could have David Bowie guest star on it and I wouldn't watch it.... well, I'd look for clips of his scenes on youtube tbh, but I would not give them the satisfaction of watching a full episode again.

Hubby likes TV and he'll get me watching things that he watches. Killjoys, Dark Matter, and Defiance on Sci-Fi this summer. Hopefully Killjoys and Dark Matter get renewed.

 

I can't remember the names of all the animes we've been watching from Cartoon Network, but there's some pretty good ones. I'm glad Inu-Yasha finally wrapped with a proper ending. Kill La Kill was pretty dern good too. It was short though.

 

Transformers: Roborts in Diguise has been pretty good (even if the toys for it are crap). Looking forward to the new season of TMNT.

 

Last night we watched Geeks Who Drink for a bit. Hubby had most of the answers, but I told him he couldn't play because he wasn't drinking

 

I can't think of any other shows. Most of what is on our TV is Hubby's video games.

I've been watching Dark Matter as well, very enjoyable show. I hope it gets renewed as well!
