What's on TV?

I wrapped Stargate SG-1 last week and am winding out the last of Stargate Atlantis now. Probably will give Universe a skip for now, but, oh, what a ride it's been. The last couple seasons of SG-1, with Browder and the extraordinary Claudia Black joining the cast, gave me a real hankering for Farscape, which I inexplicably never have finished, so, since it's not streaming, I ordered up the complete series on Blu-ray* and will be diving into it here when the last gate in the Pegasus Galaxy closes.

*Here's a warning, though, on the off chance anybody else goes looking at this 15th-Anniversary or whatever edition: It's not actually a box set but just four loose seasons wrapped together to ship. Was a little disappointed on that count.

Working my way through Babylon 5, again, on Amazon Prime.  I think this is my fourth or fifth time through the series.  Each time I appreciate something new--this time it's the foreshadowing, the plot points and repeated lines.

I just watched "The Long Dark" the other night, and discovered that Amis was played by Dwight Schultz: The A-Team's "Howling Mad" Murdock.  I also noticed that Mark Rolston (PFC Drake in Aliens) portrayed the serial killer Mueller in "The Quality of Mercy."

Finished Atlantis today. Really had plenty of room to run a few more seasons, I think. Syfy's cancellation of shows is right up there with FOX's sometimes, I swear.

Discussion questions for the group with spoilers:

Rodney McKay was lovable, and his happiness well-deserved, but Jewell Staite and Jason Momoa had absolutely insane chemistry together on the screen. Like, I-almost-could-convince-myself-to-write-erotic-fanfiction type of chemistry. Who should've wound up winning the hand of Dr. Keller, Rodney or Ronon?

Is that a trick question, since Keller never should've been added to the show because Carson Beckett never should have died?

How does no one remember/talk about Momoa in this show more often? He was absolutely killer in this roles. Kicked broccoli all across the Pegasus Galaxy. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>Khal Drogo or Fishboy, change my mind.

I agree, Keller and Ronan would have been a great pair. I love Rodney but it almost seemed like they tried to hard to pair the two of them up and I wish they had stuck with him and Katie.

I miss Carson, his death still gets to me just like Janet Fraser’s in SG-1. What is with them killing off the doctors?!?

Ugh, everyone loving Momoa because of Khal Drogo annoys me sometimes. Yes, he was great in the role but Ronon is hands down way better. One of my favorite episodes is the one with him and Teal’c stuck on Midway station. I could watch him and Christopher Judge all day.

I think you gave me the final push to start watching them again. They are my favorite shows and it’s been awhile since I made my way through them. I would definetly recommend waiting to watch Universe as the style difference can be a bit jarring after watching the others. It still a decent show which gets better as you get further into it. Did you watch the follow up movies to SG-1?

Yes! The Midway episode was great. The two of them together was so epic it took two galaxies and the space between to hold the awesomeness and power.

My other favorite (and more oddball) team-up: Woolsey and O'Neill. The episode where they're trapped in hiding on Atlantis--could've watched those two chew the scenery together for hours lol.

Ah, Fraser. Her death was not a happy moment at all, and it was kind of lame that they killed her off just because they wanted to prove someone could die, and she was far enough to the edge to be expendable--they did that episode so incredibly well though. I teared up.

Carson was still such a weirder move though. Can't say it wasn't bold tho. He was main cast then and probably the most likable character on the show.

I haven't watched Continuum yet but did watch Ark of Truth. Was a little disappointed how they split the team into separate storylines--and the Replicators. I absolutely hate the Replicators. Least favorite part of the entire series. I've wondered if I'm weird in this regard--the few people I've heard from about it seem to disagree. But, man, I can't stand them.

Well, it really is time for me to rewatch them as I don’t recall the Woolsey and O’Niell episode. I do think the minimal cast episodes are some of the best and another good example is the one of Rodney stuck in the jumper in the ocean. The two episode arch though with Fraiser’s death is definitely in my top ten, even after seeing it as much as I have it still gets to me.

I like the replicators in SG-1 but feel they were overdone in Atlantis. I do prefer Continuum over Ark of Truth. Ark did a good job of wrapping things up but Continuum is a fun what-if story. I have always liked time travel stories so YMMV.

And now I'm 4 episodes in to B5. This is a show that could use a special effects upgrade, especially the space stuff.

Too bad WB "lost" all the CGI files, various masters of the original film, etc.  The version on Prime suffers from this.  Most of the effects shots were never processed in widescreen, so the picture often suddenly goes very muddy/blurry and characters are improperly framed.  To be honest, I've never understood why WB treats the B5 property as poorly as it does.

Or, if you're just speaking as to the quality of the CGI, well, there's not much to be done about that.  They were ground-breaking at the time.  Most of the exterior shots worked well enough (or so I thought) although some of the blended shots don't work quite as well.

In the past I've always found Michael O'Hare's acting rather wooden, but it didn't seem quite so bad this time through.  O'Hare's performances still seem stiff, but better than I remember.

Funny, they look pretty good on my DVD boxsets, though I did get them when they were first released on DVD. Or maybe I just love the show and can enjoy it with flaws?? Not sure. I also have the first 3 seasons of Stargate SG-1 (or maybe as far as 4??? Pretty sure it was just before they jumped the shark and went through the whole General O'neill and all that), and Highlander season 1 (I really need to finish this one, or did they even finish??).

Discovery has been a real pleasure this season.

Whiskey Cavalier has been a nice surprise. Really been enjoying it. Liking the character casting, still sorry to see Maggie leave The Walking Dead though.

Gotham has been winding down it’s final season. Pretty obvious the writers never did have a series story arc figured out. A bit of a disappointment but still great casting.

Still enjoying The Orville and the new Magnum PI. The actor who played TC in the original series made a cameo in a recent episode and I was quite surprised by how much he had aged.

Made me feel old.
