Kings of War

Recommended Posts

I had one of the best games that I have ever had in my life last night, against my good lady - 3,000 points of my undead vs. the full strength of our combined dwarf armies under her excellent generalship.

It was brutal, but when the dust cleared... the dwarfs were the victors, bloodied and thrice decimated, but the undead were far, far worse off - though the lich king leading the undead host escaped without injury.

For the dwarfs - the Brocks did the most damage, but eventually went too far beyond their host, and paid the ultimate price of bravery. (But managed to take a unit of ghouls, a unit of skeletons, and a unit of revenants with them, before being routed by a lucky shot from a catapult on their heavily damaged unit. Until they broke completely, they never once wavered.)

For the Undead - the Revenant cavalry and the Soul Reaver cavalry took a decent escort with them to Hell - but died in turn three. (Megan's Brocks and my cavalry were on opposite flanks.) They took two units of Ironclads, a unit of Ironwatch, and all of Megan's artillery with them before crashing into her bulwarkers and coming to a fatal stop. (The artillery was their goal - everything else was just the jimmies on the sundae.)

Before being silenced the guns managed to heavily damage both units - the Ironwatch had Jar of the Winds, and were used to good effect. While they did not manage to rout any of the undead units, they softened up several enough that Ironclads, Brock, and Rangers could destroy them. (Big undead units are hard to break - without the fire poured into the two big units (revenants and skeleton hordes) the Brocks would not have been able to sweep the flank.

Two thirds of the undead had been swept from the board, and a third of the dwarfs went to early graves.

The Auld Grump

*EDIT* In case anybody wonders why I am so happy with a loss - I have been teaching her tactics - her beating me means that I win! :bday:

We put this on the table this afternoon/evening and even though I didn't get a chance to play  (only 3 people showed up with armies and I offered to referee and look up rules) I'm pretty happy.  The game went over well and I think any skeptics are quite convinced.  By turn 3 or so the players were in full control and I was just chatting with the guy that inexplicably didn't bring his minis.

Now hopefully we can build on this and regain a bit of what we had going before AoS hit.

It's not as fun when you don't get to play, but often just umpiring and coaching and letting the new players have a go is the best way to get people into a new game.

My kickstarter package arrived today, so I might try and get a game or two in the weekend.

Has anyone put any thought into what the two secret lists Mantic is working on to put in with the GW lists?  A rules committee member put the following on the KoW forums:

Historic-based lists are coming seperately. People might guess one of the lists eventually, the other one I think not wink.png

What would the best ideas for lists to use Bones mins be?  I'd guess some kind of giants factions would be the cheapest to throw together using bones.

Using Bones bugbears for an ogre army could work, and the original Bones goblins are cheap enough, but most human-sized Bones are expensive when used to make an entire army compared to Mantic's own range.

As for new lists... fishmen? ::P:

Better War Drum mini for my orcs.

LOTR Troll:

Or do a conversion on this mini that I already happen to own:

If the second how would you build a drum if ,like me, you aren't much of a sculptor.  I'm kind of tempted to use my Kaladrax;s head but that would involve seriously giving up on doing an undead army.

Anyone happen to know if the $25 Gamer's Edition of the rulebook has the full army lists in it?  Want the full undead army, so I don't want to buy the cheap book, just to find out I need an expensive one, too

I had to check a bit carefully because the layout of the army list sections is different in the two books but I'm 99% sure that the small book has everything.

If you can't get ahold of either book easyarmy has all the units and stats and that can get you by even if it's not so convenient for browsing through your options.

Looks like the cheaper book is just fluffless. There is a misprint though occasionally when it tells you the rules for X can be found on page N, looks like the N is from the big book. I found at least one instance of this (the rule for individual) but I'm betting there are more.

I'd go for the LOTR Troll, personally.
