Is everything going to be Bones eventually?

Recommended Posts

I doubt it. Bones molds cost acres to make, so they have to sell very well to cover the costs.

Metal molds are considerably cheaper to make. It's the pewter itself that drives the cost of metal minis, not the moldmaking.

So while Bones works well for guaranteed sellers, metal is better for experimental or niche minis.

Metal also holds crisper detail (although some of the Bones detail is pretty amazing). As long as there are collectors who prefer metal minis, I am betting Reaper will continue to make them.

Many other miniature companies, it seems, are phasing out metal if they haven't done so completely already. Sad, really. It's very satisfying to hold a metal miniature, to feel the weight in your hand as you paint it. I don't mind paying a higher price for metal, as long as I am happy with the model overall.
