Moderator OneBoot Posted November 5, 2015 Moderator Share Posted November 5, 2015 Maybe a good time to practice speed-painting? And by speed-painting, I mean like a couple of hours per mini, not something crazy like half an hour. I understand, because I'm a slow painter too. Huzzah! --OneBoot :D
CashWiley
Well, both are pre-orders, so it will be a while anyway. Meanwhile, I whipped off a quick Imperial Officer to lead those Stormtroopers! Less than two hours! Took pics before sealing them, in case I royally screw up the brush on gloss varnish, which I've never used before. I'll probably just leave the Imps on black bases because it looks cool.
CashWiley
Did some tweaking to the RBG Keeper and calling it done, just lost focus on the project and want to shut the door on it. I can always mess with it later, but meh. Tried to get some pics, but it was a fail for such a dark piece in the lightbox, so I'll try again later. He may need some more dulcote, lots of reflection on the black. Fighting me to the very end! Painting the OSL on him was definitely the only fun part of that project! Also applied some 'ardcoat to the Imperial Assault minis, then matte spray to the officer. He looked passable, so I glossed Zachary. Don't want to damage these gaming minis, if possible! Zach will get a matte spray, but here's why we take pics BEFORE :)
Glitterwolf
Great job on the Imperials. That KOD mini is awesome.
CashWiley
Been a long weekend of music, and still heading out tonight but finally back home for a quick update. I started cleaning the Nocturna Scottish Freeman (aka Mel Gibson). The braids broke in transit, but I cleaned off the contact points and will just paint him without them. Still needs some GS and final tweaks but I should have him primed and ready...soon. I'll probably WIP it here but not on the blog, it's a surprise for my fiancee. Though if she sees it on the bench.... Anyway, back to it soon. Probably one last week of rest for the foot barring any disasters with the pin removal tomorrow, so I hope to make the most of it. Oh, I had a guitar workshop with the mighty Stephane Wrembel yesterday and after he taught us basic gypsy jazz rhythm he had me accompany him while he did examples! Woah! And then he had me do a few progressions of how to implement basic melodic motifs to begin developing solos and improvisation. I was floored! And he was doing the accompaniment! Craziness, I'd never thought that even at such a rudimentary level I'd have a proper lesson with the master. And during the show later that night he kept looking over at me with a 'see how this is based on what we talked about' look as he would play certain passages. My thumb is blistered...
CashWiley
First shot of primer on the bust, went on too heavy as it's the end of the can. Will have to look at it in a while to see if I can salvage it. Dulcote over 'ardcoat for Zachary after testing it out with the Imperial Officer. Worked pretty good, still a few gloss spots but mostly nice. Then a little time at the desk with Gordon Ramsay, skin and hair. No pics, sorry! Pins are out but foot needs to heal and gets throbby pretty quick...
CashWiley
Ok, black primer coat tightened up ok, a little off in a couple of non-critical spots but I went ahead and did the white zenithal...and my can of white spit all over the front of him :p Not the end of the world, but an inauspicious start...

CashWiley
No. Last couple days I've base coated and done some work on shading Mel. So tough to get it shaded correctly and also blend neatly at this scale. Working back up through mid and highlighting is going to be tough!

Moderator OneBoot Posted November 21, 2015 Moderator Share Posted November 21, 2015 Woah! Blending is already looking quite good!! And yeah, I'll bet that working at that scale is tough for blending, since it's all RIGHT THERE. :) The lips, neck, cheekbones and chin look the best currently, imho. Can't quite tell what your plan is for the cheeks yet. Keep truckin'! He's going to be a fantastic piece when he's finished! :D Huzzah! --OneBoot :D
CashWiley
Don't really have a plan for the cheeks (or anything). I'm taking inspiration from a bunch of European painters, from Ben's Shield Maiden videos to JBT. Most of the pics I'm taking inspiration from have very starkly dark cheeks, but it's pretty different depending on the sculpt, so translating that isn't easy. I'm trying to go easy on this one, as I know she loves the source material and I just want to have fun with it and try something new (the bust) while staying as comfortable as possible (using a palette based on my warm dark caucasian palette I've been using for a while now). I could probably start highlighting and not be too upset with it. As it is I plan on at least one more session to fix a few things and then smooth back into the mids and start highlighting. And I tried Ben's wet blending stuff and it just isn't working for me, so I went back to layering which smoothed out to where it is now. I think to even get anywhere with wet blending I'd need 2-brush blending to avoid tide marks, since I don't lick brushes.
LittleBluberry
I have to say, your two hour paint job is pretty amazing! Love that you're letting go and doing tabletop stuff, I really want to up my speed so that's what I've been doing as well. (Not that my tabletop looks anywhere as good as yours, but I'm only human.)
