CashWiley
Thanks, LBB. I'm learning to just have fun with tabletop while letting myself take time with the better stuff. Nice balance, though I definitely prefer Zombicide plastic to Imperial Assault, which is too bad (I love SW).
CashWiley
Short session tonight, but one of those fun ones. The skin tones were getting to me, so I decided to jump ahead and paint the eyes to give it something cool to drive me forward. Then I roughed in some dark brown on the leathers and hair to start getting an idea of the overall tone. Finally, the merest beginning of playing with where I'll take highlights and another stab at Ben's loaded brush which I'm entirely terrible with (the bridge of the nose, left cheek and left upper lip). But rough as those small highlights are, they're starting to give me an idea of the skin's tonal range.
CashWiley
A little more playing around with the shadow volumes and then I started putting in some rough highlights to get the overall picture of what the heck I'm doing. This step really helped me visualize a few areas I've been struggling with. Shadow and highlight placement is never easy! The other challenge with this one is that I'm desaturating most of the colors I'm using. So there's a lot of trial and error as I usually use paints right out of the bucket. I'm mostly using black and white to desaturate and playing with the value while mixing. The black did some interesting stuff as I got above the mid-tone, really nice green/greys I'll have to remember for other uses..
CashWiley
More work on upper mids and highs, getting close to where I like it. Contrast with the chin, which I've not put any highs at all, to see how far I've pushed it so far. Still a few tweaks to be made but mostly refinements at this point.

MissMelons
It looks excellent but can I say one thing, just because Cash is awesomeness and stuff! Somewhere between the previous picture of november 27 to todays, the skin color became really 'cold'. It was nice and warm on november 27. But he looks absolutely amazing regardless, I'm most likely insane. It looks great Cash!
CashWiley
No, that's all the desaturated highlights and losing a bunch of the warmer mids. I'll definitely be putting some back in! Some of it might just be the crap photos, too. Glad you guys dig it, it has been a real challenge and great learning experience as you know!
CashWiley
Only able to sneak in a half hour today, slept most of the day trying to get this stupid foot healed up! Working the lower part of the face with mids and highs to match the upper parts. Roughing some more mids back into the neck and bringing up the lower cheeks a bit. That strong dark lower cheek matches a lot of the source material I'm working from and looks great straight on, but looks weird in profile. He has some clenched jaw kinda thing sculpts on so I'll lighten that up a bit, maybe a gradient to mid tone or something.
Corporea
nice! I love it!!! ...and much warmer with the midtones!
CashWiley
Skin more or less dialed in where I want it. My palette is running out, and I've done so many little custom mixes that aren't sustainable over this long a time. First time for any new thing is always the longest, so even at my slow pace I can see where I can cut out a lot of wasted time next time I tackle something like this. So I'm probably going to move on to other areas rather than mix new skin batches and continue tweaking color, value and blending for another couple weeks :) One thing I practiced a lot today was trying to get better at feathering my edges, since I've been getting a lot of tide marks, boo. Took this pic with a reference card, so it's pretty close to a decent representation (for a phone camera, anyway!).
KruleBear
Nice work on the skin. Like bombed away!
CashWiley
Started in on the hair yesterday and did a bit more today, so labor intensive and tough to get that balance of cool painting without pushing it into cartoony. Pics aren't cooperating, and using inks for shading makes it worse. Looks cool in a few parts, definitely learning some new tricks yet again. Great project for learning, even if the results keep falling short of my goals :) Probably back to work in a day or two, so progress will probably become glacial as I try to finish this by Yule.
CashWiley
With the gloss and relative subtlety of the hair, I just couldn't get a decent pic with the phone, so I broke out the light box and good camera to get a better idea of where I'm at. Hair takes sooo long and with barbaric dudes like Mel here, it's a fine balance. I'm more or less ok with how it looks (and of course it's way better in hand as usual). Only part that's nagging me is the pony tail, I think maybe it should be a wee bit lighter to bring it forward from the underlying hair. It would mostly be ends which would be a bit more sun-bleached.

Speaking from years of experience, the uppermost layer of hair tends to be the lightest, from sun exposure and such; this is more noticeable on dark hair (mine is dark brown, so it's very noticeable, especially in summer!). Gathering that top hair into a ponytail, like he did, would show the hair underneath as darker than the ponytail, which would be overall a bit lighter. It's looking very nice so far! :) Huzzah! --OneBoot :D
CashWiley
I think I talked earlier about knowing you are learning new things because it makes you feel so dumb. Feeling that way now as I try some new approaches to cloth and leather. Got a bit done (undershirt, that tweak on the ponytail, started sketching in values on the leather), but pretty worn out so no pics until tomorrow. Really want to get another good session in, but lots of chores and of course night school! Probably signing up for drawing and painting classes starting in Jan through Apr, so my two painting nights a week will continue to be consumed.
