I created WanderDen Labs based on one simple idea: I believe science can bring imagination to life.

In the modern world, "scientific" so often means mass-produced, while "handcrafted" often means primitive.

WanderDen imagines a different world, a world combining the authenticity of traditional techniques with the abilities of modern science. I like to think of it as handcrafted science.

This idea is the at the heart of everything WanderDen does. Each and every design is exhaustively researched and studied, and every item is handmade from start to finish in-house.

MapCloth is more than just a map, it's a process to print any detailed, black and white image onto material that is waterproof, durable, and beautifully textured.

Best of all, it’s a fully custom process. MapCloth is made individually, not mass-produced. That means just about any design or application you can imagine is possible.

If you’re a backpacker, you can choose the size and scale of your map and know it’s going to hold up under the toughest conditions.

If you have a favorite fantasy series or game, you can have the perfect prop customized to your character, or a fantasy map straight from your favorite story, even from your own sketchbook!

What are the Different Types?

To better serve the great variety of applications, I've developed several blends, each with its own strength. All remain waterproof and very durable, but each has a different focus.

MapCloth Classic is the original design. It is a balance between Studio and Trek. Its unique and beautiful texture resembles an aged scroll or animal hide. Suggested uses: Props, fantasy maps, casual trail maps, treasure hunts, letters and notes.

MapCloth Classic

MapCloth Studio is focused on look and feel. It comes in a variety of colors and is best for display or preserving things that will be used primarily indoors. Suggested uses: recipes, letters, invitations, decoration.

MapCloth Studio

MapCloth Trek is focused entirely on utility. It is slightly thinner and lighter. It doesn't have the same developed texture as the others and feels much more like fabric than leather or animal hide. However, it is EXTREMELY durable. Hot, cold, wet, dry and the roughest of treatments. Suggested uses: trail and topo maps for intense backpackers, survival guides or emergency info for adventure trips.

Here's the process, from purchase to delivery, for your very own custom MapCloth.

Step 1: You select your reward and pledge level. If it's custom, you can start thinking about what image and/or text you would like printed on it.

Step 2: After fundraising ends, all backers will immediately be contacted with a survey. You will select your chosen material, and if you have a custom order, attach the file you would like printed.

Step 3: I review your survey and print the file onto cloth. It is then treated with a proprietary combination of natural oils, waxes, and a catalyst. You receive a message that your order has begun the curing process.

Step 4: Your order cures for about a week.

Step 5: After curing, your order is washed in a special aging and binding bath and allowed to dry for about 48 hours.

Step 6: Final quality check. Your order is packaged and sent to you along with a care guide. You receive a message that your order is on it's way.

Step 7: Your beautiful MapCloth arrives, all ready for your next adventure!

A Bit About Me...

I'm an incessant tinkerer, with a life-long love for invention, theatre, and biochemistry. After studying molecular biology in college, I worked as a balloon artist, teacher, international photojournalist, marketing director, and door-to-door salesman.

But in every job, and in all my spare time, I kept a notebook of inventions, designs, and ideas. After many years, this notebook has expanded to several volumes. With the encouragement of friends and family, I decided to launch a business to start sharing these inventions with the world.

Thus, WanderDen was born.

It does seem pretty neat, but I don't have anything that I immediately want printed on their map cloth.

If they succeed, I'll probably wait until the next time I launch an RPG campaign, and order then. *shrug*

It would be nice to have a cool treasure map to hang on the wall. For gaming, maybe an Eberron map but not sure which.

If I was still gaming in a certain home brew world I would get all the hand drawn maps from that. But that game fell apart.

Mebbe gibberish in different fonts. That way, a DM could repeatedly use a piece of cloth for messages or whatnot.

I'm getting one for a friend with a 16th century seafaring map on it..the $10 add on to make it an 8 x 22" scroll map is too good to pass up
