Reaper Bones Warg (77202), first attempt at highlighting fur

Recommended Posts

Title is pretty self-explanatory. I did multiple layers of different mixes of Vallejo sky grey, Vallejo london grey, Vallejo german cammo black brown, Reaper shadowed stone, and Reaper pure white for various grey shade highlights on the fur. Also took a lot of mixing of Reaper viper green, pale saffron, and dragon blue to get the eye color I wanted, but I think I succeeded at a menacing yellow-green with them. C&C welcome!

The flash makes it a little difficult to see, but from what I can see it looks great!  One the most difficult things for me is hair/fur highlighting.  I tend to go way over board, and it doesn't come out right.  You seem to have a really good handle on it.  I really like it!

Thanks! There was definitely a lot of experimentation on this one. Several rounds of paint highlights, screw up, let it dry and paint over it with the brown, paint highlights again. I went a little overboard at first for sure, but toned it down on successive attempts.

Looks cool in that light.  It'd be nice if the eyes showed themselves more--they contrast with the starkness of the fur (and base it of course).

Nice work! A little camera-work game-upping certainly would be helpful in seeing the full splendor. ^_^

Point well-taken. These are actually taken with my iPhone, the lighting is an LED lamp on my desk that I use while painting (not camera flash). I have my actual Kodak camera working again, but I have to pick up a new SD card reader so I can transfer the pics I take with it so I can post them.  <_<

Updated photos soonTM.

I feel funny saying that, as I take horrendous pictures--so please don't take it the wrong way! lol I want to make a big-bad-wolf better-to-see-you-with-my-dear joke here, given the mini, but I haven't been able quite to piece it together.

A couple quick, easy (and cheap!) fixes, background and lighting, will make a world of difference. Unless aiming for professional-type quality, I think phone shots generally do fine. The glare is one of the problems I kept having with mine.

Anyway, not even a big deal and totally secondary to the actual point of painting minis; only real benefit is other people's getting a better look, heh.

Possibly your light is a little harsh, but if you've got an iphone, you're shooting with better than what I've got (Galaxy S2... Ye olde phone, haha). I just get my mum to wrap our LED light thing in a hanky or something to soften it up a bit if needs be - helps a lot.

Anyway, mini!

Warg <3

My first ever was this very warg, so I've got a special fondness going on... Yours is lovely =] he looks thoroughly bothered and his eyes definitely have menance to them - great job ^^

I agree with the lighting issue, but what I can see looks great!

I just had to do this, found one at my local chain office supply store for $6.50...

Works a treat!

Now that my Bones 4 order is here, my backwards brain decided it's finally time to paint the fire dragon I've had in my box of shame for a year and a half! I don't think I can claim that I'm "new to painting" anymore, but this is my first dragon and by far the biggest mini I've attempted thus far. In order to actually paint more things I like instead of saving them until I've practiced or become good enough to attempt them, I'm trying to adopt the mentality of trying at least one new technique with every mini I paint. Hopefully this will get me out of my comfort zone and into some new styles and skills.

The focus of this guy is going to be blending, both wet and feathering. I'm still getting used to the process of documenting my WIPs, so if anybody has suggestions or requests (pics of my working palette, color recipes, what have you) please let me know. Lots of pics beyond the spoiler!

This Bones figure was the demonstration model in my 2-hour "Good Fast Painting" class at ReaperCon 2017.  I got her about 2/3 done in the class.
She stood half-painted on my shelf for a year and a half.
This past Sunday, I just needed to paint something, and this was it.  An hour later, I was ready to call her done.
As always, I spent a lot more time per square millimeter on the face & eyes.
      Enjoy!

Got to get a brighter light, but here are my bugbears.

      Hey all, been a while.

Quick job from Bones 4. Added a saddle, threw on a Mantic Soul Reaver cavalry rider with a head swap from Puppetswar.

My first post here! I thought the bones 4 ape men would make good soldiers for my growing demonic army. Still thinking of tweaking some of the smaller details and considering also painting the armored one as a barlgura. Tried to give some texture by dry brushing orange over a black base coat for fur. I also tried to dry brush around the eyes to create a deep red glowing effect.

Shown with a human paladin for scale.
C and c welcome but keep in mind I’m pretty new to this!

The monster Manual art for reference:
