Queen of the Fey conversion

Recommended Posts

I'm wanting to do a Bones conversion and was hoping to get some advise here.

In my world there's four main camps of "Outsiders". Angels/Archons (lg), Azata/Eladrin/Fey (cg), Demons (ce), and Devils (le). Once Bone 3 is released three of the four camps will have a top end representation (CR 20+). So with that in mind what I want to do is convert a mini to be a Azata/Eladrin/Fey counterpart to the Balor, Pit Fiend, and Solar Angel.

All three existing "outer lords" are large sized and winged. So I want something along those lines. As all the existing lords are male I'd like this conversion to be a female. The only female Bones mini of comparable size seems to be the Cloud Giant (77162)? So how would one go about making her into a Queen of the Fey? Are there any other large Bones females that I'm missing?

The first problem I see is were to get wings and how to attach them. So that she has her own style I'd like to give her large butterfly wings (Angels = avian wings, Devils = bat-like wings, Demons = a mix of styles, Fey = insectile wings). I'm not sure what to use though. Assuming I find something fitting how should I then attach them? The Cloud Giant has a lot of hair down her back that would get in the way.

If I use the Cloud Giant, the next problem I see is her weapon. A big club doesn't really seem fitting. What could I use to replace the club and how would I go about that?

Lastly she's a bit more scantily clad then what I feel is fitting for this concept. How hard would it be to sculpt a skirt around her legs with "green stuff"? Would "green stuff" even be the appropriate thing to use for something like that?

I know this is a lot of trouble to go through but I don't see any other way of getting what I "need". As there is no particularly well known large Azata/Eladrin/Fey lord type in D&D or Pathfinder it's unlikely Reaper will ever make this sort of model.

Any thoughts or comments would be much appreciated. :)

For the wings, you might look at your local craft/floral shop for one of the may kinds of decorative butterflies that are aviaible.

Assuming you're using the Bones Cloud Giant, the club should be easy to cut away, and replace with something else. I carefully cut the weapon on mine and re positioned it upwards.

You should be able to do the same.  For a replacement, a spear would probably be easy to fashion from a skewer and a bit of greenstuff.

And I would think greenstuff would work fine for the skirt too.

There is a female fire giant and a female frost giant in addition to the cloud giant. I haven't gotten around to the frost giant yet, but here's what the fire giant looks like.

Green stuff will work fine. Mix a medium-sized ball, and then roll it out flat on a non-stick surface like silicone parchment paper. Let it sit for maybe 15-30 minutes for it to harden somewhat, then trim the edges cleanly with a craft knife and carefully lift your new rectangle of "fabric", and smooth and crease it on the mini. Not too hard, but easier to do with experience. Try a few practice cloaks or such.

The hardest part is probably knowing when to lift it off. Too early and the GS stretches too much and will probably tear as you lift it off, too, too late and the GS is a hardened sheet that you can use to make pattern stuff, but is useless for drapery.

@Chris Palmer: My main concern about the wings is how the materials will behave with paints and whatnot. For the weapon I could see some sort of spear or glaive being a reasonably good fit. Did you flip your Cloud Giant's arm at the elbow?

@Auberon: I knew about the Fire Giant but hadn't really considered her. She might work with modification but I'm not sure she has the right Fey-like look. I'll have to take a closer look and think about how that might work.

@djizomdjinn: Thanks for the green stuff tips. I've never really used it for anything other then as a gap filler. It sounds like there's a real art to working it properly.

You would need to experiment with the wings, they possibly could need a primer if they are amde of plastic. Or, you could always leave them as they are. I don't know where you are located, but the local craft stores here, Michaels and JoAnns both sell the butterflies with very realisticly colored wings (not like the ones I linked above) that you could use straight out of the package no problem.

Super glue would probably work fine for attaching them.

Yes, I sliced the arm at the elbow and reattached with super glue. Her arm guard made a nice natural separation to hide the joint. One of the things I love about Bones is how easy you can slice and dice them.

I picked up some of these Ooak brand "fairy wings" on evilbay a few months ago for use in a similar project (that has since gone on the back burner), but thought you might still wish to see them.

They're actually pretty nice, but I thought they would be a bit more like real wings, given the picture.  However, they're basically printed on thin clear sheets that you have to cut out and glue onto your model of choice.  The upside is that they were really cheap, the downside is that I'm not sure how they would look if you painted over the areas on the photo where the wing structure is.
