I was lining up my larger humanoids in a row and made an observation, relating to the  new larger giants coming out (in Bones 3), mass, and CR (using 3.x D&D/Pathfinder rules). So I thought I'd share my thoughts. :)

It seems that for basic humanoids (without regeneration or other fancy rules that boost up their CR beyond their base mass) there's generally a fairly even progression. Which is there's a +1 to CR for every 5mm of mini height (1ft in game) beyond the base 28mm (5'7") mini size.

Based off CR added to any class levels.

+0 CR â‰ˆ 30mm (6ft.) Standard size for human mini

+1 CR â‰ˆ 35mm (7ft.) "Advanced" template Orc Boss (77064).

+2 CR â‰ˆ 40mm (8ft.) Bugbears (77015).

+3 CR â‰ˆ 45mm (9ft.) Ogres (77105). I'm assuming the Bones 3 Ogres will be about the same size.

+5 CR â‰ˆ 55mm (11ft.) Giant-kin (Bones 1 Fire/Frost Giants).

+7 CR â‰ˆ 65mm (13 ft.) Hill Giants (77313).

+8 CR â‰ˆ 70mm (14 ft.) Stone Giants (77336). Ya they're a bit lightly built but it roughly works.

+9 CR â‰ˆ 75mm (15 ft.) Frost Giants (Bones 3). This seems to be about how tall they'll be.

+10 CR â‰ˆ 75mm* (15 ft.) Fire Giants (Bones 3). *As they're so wide they're a bit shorter they otherwise would be.

So what do you think? If there's any merit to my line of thinking I hope we see some 85mm Cloud Giants (CR 11) and 95mm Storm Giants (CR 13) some time in the future. Bones 4?

I like your theory, but CR is driven by the game designers, so it's hard to predict how the mini will affect it. It seems like a pretty reasonable rule of thumb for your game.

(Interestingly, a 70mm Stone Giant should be about 8x the mass of that 35mm Orc, and happens to also have 8x the CR. Sure, you might call it coincidence, but I say it implies that a 140mm giant should be about CR 64.  :upside: )

Oh! I hadn't noticed that. As you point out that wouldn't really work at the higher levels but it is a fun coincidence.  ^_^

I just thought it was fun that there was something of an even/scaled advancement. I can hardly wait to receive the new giants to get an actual view of them. Mostly I was considering this to decide what I could field my smaller Bones 1 "Frost Giants" as. Looks like I'll just use stats something comparable to a Cyclops or Ettin and call them "Giant-kin".

I also like how the Trolls I have (CR 4-6) are Ogre sized (CR 3) because it makes sense that their CR would be higher then their base mass because of the regeneration and all that jazz.

This is the Hill Giant from 77939. I have not finished the cat yet, so I only have the Giant here. I have been trying to add various colors (layers of color for one area/color) to my minis to make them more interesting. Following some of the painters here and other utubers and painters like Angel G. I used an Imperial Purple base for this entire mini and then did Troll Flesh as next base for skin and then built up reddish skin tones for skin and then went lighter tan. Hope you enjoy, I had fun painting him.

      Goal

The purpose of this thread is to gather in one place all the visual answers to the oft recurring question, “How big is Reaper miniature __ __ __ __ __ ?”

That question comes up about once a week; but always about different models. This thread is meant to serve as a place for those foolish kind souls who decide to answer in detail with a photograph to post their work.

      Guidelines for such photographs

“...Posed in front of an inch or centimeter grid, and / or with a ruler laid out in front of, above, or behind them, and / or next to other Miniatures for comparison...” Comparison pics are the most useful because the numerical height of a model doesn't always tell you how bulky it is, or how exaggerated the features might be. Common objects like paint dropper bottles, figure bases, and specific Miniatures like Sir Forscale (76543) can acquaint the viewer with size of a new Mini, especially while standing on a grid. The best comparison shots are like police line-ups: several miniatures side-by-side in front of an easily-read scale.

@Pingo @redambrosia and @lowlylowlycook contributed most of the wording in the preceding paragraph (which I edited a bit).

I got this Frost Giant King in the last BoGW Europe. Glitterwolf put it in there I believe ( @Glitterwolf).

I aimed for a fastvpaintjob, then noticed more and more details during the paint.
Tried my best at a frostbite-ish effect on the sword. In the end I loved him so much he deserved a proper base.
I went with an icy base, without the often seen crackle effect. There was no tutorial for what I was aiming for, so I winged it.

The rock is a piece of driftwood with wall filler.

I'm quite happy on the outcome. What do you all think?

Today I wanted to show off some cheap 54mm Vikings that I painted up as Frost Giants.

I made these guys close to a year ago, and they were among some of the first larger sized minis I had worked on, so they're a little rough, and that's before looking at the quality of model, but if someone else is in need of a lot of giants like I was, then this might be useful to them!

So these guys are from Tehnolog, a Russian miniatures company that I know very little about.  The minis are made out of a soft plastic like novelty toys you can buy with tickets at an arcade.  They also have abysmal detail.

They're meant for 54mm wargaming, and I believe there's an intended game system that accompanies the line, but my goal was to get some cheap giants for D&D.

They fit nicely on a 2in base, and could probably fit in with the smaller Reaper Bones giants, but they're definitely a little undersized.  I remedied this by giving them each a boosted base, with the leader getting two layers.  At a glance, they tower over a standard medium sized mini.

The details were rough and there were some ugly mold lines here and there.  But they're serviceable.  They might work better as a half-giant if you want to use 5e's Huge Frost Giants.

More pictures of each giant below the Spoiler:

Tehnolog also has a few other lines of fantasy-esque minis if you're a fan of cheap minis.  I am still considering getting one of their other lines to convert into cheap-o Fire Giants.

What's your favorite obscure miniature substitute?
