Aku-chans Epic Monster Saga:- Part 2 'A Test of Courage'

Recommended Posts

Making a start to part 2 of my saga, with the Messenger of Courage:-

BAVeGkw.jpgCojyZlN.jpg

Just assembled and primed at the moment.

Didn't like the sculpted ground effect on her fancy base insert, so I smooshed some Pumice Putty between the faces, should look a bit better when painted.

Where does one acquire these minis?  I've always got my eye out for anime-style minis.  And is that a Hyrulean sword she's wielding?

This is from Kingdom Death (their Kickstarter is finally fulfilling). Just do a search online and their store will pop up and they have a lot of figures.

Thanks for the encouragement everybody!

As Ub3r N3rd already pointed out, she's from the Kingdom Death kickstarter.

But all the Messenger minis were meant to have limited availability, so I don't know when or even if she'll be put on general release.

Progress!

Had an attack of shaky hands, so I painted up her base:-

I wish more KD minis came with base inserts, or that you could buy these little faces separately, they look so cool!

It'll have some grass on it eventually, I'm not sure where Courage stands on it at the moment though.

Once I had control of my hands again, worked on Courage herself a bit more:-

You can see the mess I made trying to basecoat while shaking!

Her skin was based with Vallejo Flat Flesh, given a wash of Vallejo Flesh Shade and then highlights of Flat Flesh and 1:1 Flat Flesh/Off-White.

The shadow under her bum is looking a little too strong, not sure how to fix that without making a mess.

Then I did her hair:-

Gotta stop leaving paint bottles in the background, makes things blurry!

Hair was based with 1:1 Ruddy Leather/Carnage Red, then given a highlight of 1:1:2 Ruddy Leather/Carnage Red/Vallejo Vermilion and finally a Brown wash to add a bit of depth.

More progress:-

Basecoated both her hood and leg wraps in Sapphire Blue.

The leg wraps then got a black wash to get some shade in all those lines, while the hood was shaded with 1:2 Pure Black/Sapphire Blue. I then reclaimed the basecoat on the wraps, and both got highlights of 1:1 Sapphire Blue/Rainy Grey.

Getting a close up look at her hood, I think it could use a bit of glazing.

You too? How many times have you heard "brace your wrists together"? Well, that doesn't really work when your fingers start twitching.

Great paintwork, And that looks to be a nice mini - I might add it in with my Anima Tactics mini's.

Poots did sell the face bases in packs during the KS, so they may come up at retail later on this year or early next year.

I bought 100 :p

I'd spent way too much during the KS to get any face base packs (or extra armour kits  ).

I wanna have a good play with the set that comes in the main box first, see how easy it is to break them up and stuff, before I get extras.

Mainly I'd love to see more unique inserts like Courages or Silk Assassins awesome skelly finger one, but I understand how impractical and resource draining that would be.

Thanks.

Yeah, I hear that a lot!

It helps somewhat, as does using a really small brush, but sometimes it's just a really bad idea to go near anything with details.

More progress:-

Worked on her tunic/dress today.

Based with Vallejo Medium Olive, shaded with 1:1 Medium Olive/Ruddy Leather and highlighted with 1:1 and 1:2 mixes of Medium Olive/Yellowed Bone, then got a light glaze of Medium Olive.

Had to tidy up her skin around the edges of her tunic/dress, so I fixed her bum cheek too, much happier with it now!

In between waiting for things to dry, I've made a start on her shield:-

I'm being brave (for me) and trying a quartered patten of Peacock Green and Vallejo Sick Green.

Been forgetting to upload my progress:-

oGE4cuv.jpg

Painted her sword (Vallejo Oily Steel blade, Vallejo Burnished Gold decoration, a Peacock Green gem and a Rainy Grey face thingy).

And her shield (Oily Steel, Burnished Gold and Vallejo Copper decorations)

(Darn it! Forgot to move those paint bottles again!)

And her leathery bits in Lonestar Leather, with 1:1 Lonestar Leather/Yellowed Bone highlights and a good brown wash.

Just need to get her on her base and she'll be ready for show-off!

Separating a bee from its honey is always a risky prospect, but especially when they are giant, man-eating Titan Bees.
However, when smeared with a concoction made with the pulped remains of it's larva, a person is temporarily rendered virtually invisible to the Bees. And so the Bug Thief started a thriving business stealing bee babies to make into potions, but how did she survive going into the hive in the first place? That's a mystery to be solved another day.

Had a lot of fun painting this one, her bee striped fur thingy didn't come out like I hoped (and she's stuck with rather wonky eyes) but I think she ended up looking fairly decent overall.

As always, any comments or criticisms are warmly received.

This is a Patrick Keith sculpt  from the Warlord range and I have loved it since it came out years ago.  She would be a really cool player character, I don't know why we don't see her more often.  Great dynamic movement with this one.  Anyway, I threw some color on her, so maybe she'll end up on the table one day.

I painted her up as a fun project. Let me know what you think.

I am trying to improve my painting abilities.

The purple marking on her thigh was supposed to be a skull tattoo, it didn't really work as well as I had hoped.

While the title may sound like a part of a weird children's book series, it's actually a trio of Kingdom Death Pin-ups!

The Bug Thief, her right arm goes across her face so I've left it off for now.

The Swamp Girl. I have to paint her base, paint her and then sandwich the clear bit in between without making a mess.

The Dogpole Mother, the hard part will be painting the Dogpoles so that they actually look like something!

      Starting with the Bug Thief:-

Painted her face and boobs (Rosy Flesh > Flesh Wash > Rosy Flesh > Rosy Flesh/Light Flesh), added a touch of Scarlett Red to the final highlight for her lips and painted her eyes (The left one is a bit buggy, but I'm hoping it'll look better once I paint her hair).
