I said I'd introduce this fellow once I was done with my Burrowing Horror, but I need some advice on how to proceed.

Here's what it looks like naked (as in unpainted, still SFW):

And here's what I've done so far with it:

So my questions are, Where did I go wrong? What can I do next to make this look more convincing and natural, whilst maintaining the vivid colors?

Natural?  Not so much.  You can make it look a little more...realistically shaded with a simple wash.  I'd go deep, dark red-brown for the orange parts, as they resemble lobster carapace.  For the blue...maybe a very dark, rich purple.  A bit of highlighting here and there would give it more depth too.  And of course a base always finishes a mini off right.

I think the "lobster" idea has merit. Going that route, I think it needs to be mostly brown (for the orange areas) and black/dark purple for the blue areas. Googling up images of lobsters, I think that's the way to go. I guess to rephrase that, it needs to be dark colored, but then the highlights need to be the vivid colors. It will tone the colors down quite a bit, but would look more realistic.

And by "highlights", I'm meaning a much larger area than normal. I guess that would imply that the base color would be brown, then midtone orange, with some bright orange highlights. I'm thinking 50-40-10 like ratio.

I finally recovered the images that inspired this color scheme, and now I can see what I'm doing wrong.

Seems that the reds need to be deeper, blues generally lighter, edge highlights brighter, and transitions more abrupt, though not absolutely.

In light of this new information that I'm still not following sufficiently, I've accomplished this on the left side of the monster:

More to do. Much more to do.

I think I have a handle on the legs. The tentacles are still iffy. I trimmed the fangs off the mouth parts. There were mold lines going through them and I couldn't fix it with a knife; I might set pin points in them later.

Oh my goodness this is looking gorgeous!

Keep doing what you're doing, you're definitely getting a realistic crustacean look!

I need to take another pass at the tentacles. The bright blue coming directly from the red shell doesn't seem right, nor the pink on the sucker-side. Think, thank, thunk.

I repainted the arm tentacles orange and regularized their pinkish sucker sides, but left the eyestalk largely as it was. A purplish tint was added to the sacs around the sides. There is some general progress on the legs. I don't really know what to do with the mouth parts.

It looks like the mouth parts in your inspiration photo are blue. I think the blue would go well on your mini as it is mostly orange in that section so the blue would stand out. It's looking really awesome!

I think it's finally coming together now. Maybe putting the blue face on the eyestalk was a mistake. Yellow dots in the blue areas seem the key to holding this all together. I'm still puzzled as to how to treat the suckers.
