sdnelson
OK, with all your posting about CAV, the 25mm sci-fi skirmish game, and the pics of the 1/60th Dictator you've finally drug me kicking and screaming into this game. (Like I could afford ANOTHER mniatures game...) Over lunch I went out and bought the CAV rulebook and a Specter (because it was cool looking...) Now, what's the smallest points value game that you would recommend for 2 people to play. And I mean smallest, like demo type games. I was thinking 500 points, but I'm guessing 1000 would be more feasible. I've gotten my friends into too many miniatures games, so I'm going to have to build two small CAV armies to get people to play this game. Also, what do you recommend as far as a percentage mix of mecha/vehicles/infantry for just all around games? Do you prefer playing on a hex surface or on a scenic terrain tabletop? And why? Thanks in advance for the info!
Moderator Froggy the Great Posted September 13, 2002 Moderator Share Posted September 13, 2002 1000 points will get you a decent CAV-light army, or a fairly small (4 models MAYBE) CAV-heavy army. If you want a decent viable and rounded force, 1500-2000 is much better, and once you get into 3000+, that's when the true combined-arms aspect really comes into play. Ironworker
I feel the same way darn it. Must have 1/60th dictator.....Must play CAV.....No need to but food or pay bills.......Must play CAV.
nadinbrzezinski
First off, welcome to our addiction, down the hall to the right, yeap one more boss! :p That said, what Frosh said... and if you are serious about demoing it... send a friendly email to [email protected] We can use all the preachers of the faith we can find. (I'd better be careful with this language or some people will acccuse me of praying to the Great Oger, or Khardullis for that matter) :D Nadin
Black Lightning 2
I *AM* the CAV Monkey! OK, here's what I would recommend. 1x Hedgehog APC blister (this gets you two APCs). 2x Light Infantry w/ Heavy Weapons Blisters (this will net you 6 full stands of Infantry). 1x Dictator Blister 1x Starhawk V Blister 1x Sovereign III Blister With this, and the Specter that you just purchased, here are the armies that I would recommend: Army #1 830 pts CAV Section- Starhawk V 276 pts Sovereign III 259 pts Mech Infantry Section- Hedgehog APC 67 pts 3x Infantry w/ FA 45 MG & AT-23 DFM 76 x 3 = 228 Army #2 826 pts CAV Section- Dictator 249 pts Specter 282 pts Mech Infantry Section- Hedgehog APC 67 pts 3x Infantry w/ FA 45 MG & AT-23 DFM 76 x 3 = 228 This will give you plenty of options for upgrades and more units. A very good pair of tactically balanced forces. And, it's not too expensive... Only $56 MSRP, give or take a buck. Now, how do you actually BUY all of this!?! Here's my suggestion. Purchase what you can from your local game store. Then, try Hobby Workshop (http://www.hobbyworkshop.com). They sell at 20% off of MSRP. They are also very reputable. I've ordered from them with no hassle. Plus, they actually have a store front. Finally, there are a ton of Black Lightning AOs in the Illinois area. Try Kris Southerland at [email protected] He operates out of the Chicago/ Burbank area... Enjoy! And, welcome to the world of the CAV Monkeys! :-) Mike Black Lightning, Sacramento
sdnelson
Thanks for all the info! I'll be reading the rulebook over the next week and then I'll start acquiring some figs to assemble and play. I'm not really interested in demoing the game at this time, other than to my friends. My gaming palette is pretty full at this time with playtesting one game, and trying to push Clan War in this area. But CAV looks like it will be a fun replacement for Battletech. And if I enjoy playing CAV, it will help me resist the urge to pick up that collectible mecha game that will put be in way too much debt for sure... Better to spend my money on non-collectible lead mecha! And if I can help a few friends continue to resist the temptation then my efforts will be well spent! John Bear Ross
Bless you, sir...bless you. :D †:D †:D Best, John Bear Ross BTW, Mike H., I'll have to pass your starter army list on to others...it seems like it is a good way to intro the game for a low get-in price. sparky
Accually there are Assult Officers that are closer than Chicago and more than willing to travel to provide these recent converts to the CAV religion. Drop me a line I'm in Washington, Illinois about an hour and half west of you. I've got a demo this weekend in Bloomington, Illinois (about 45 minutes west of you on I74) at Adventureland ( local gaming store ) at 1pm. Feel free to bring your buddies! I've been in the champaign area quite a bite and after Bear Productions closer his offical storefront it makes it a little hard to do demos. If a store has opened we will gladly come to Champaign and support you. (my grandmother is from Champaign) You can also follow the ulr below to my Cav page wher you will find upcoming events in "hte Land of Lincoln" and beyond. :D

Fortunately we did finally get a gaming store with some tables. www.dragons-table.com It's on Main St. in Champaign, they share the store with G-Mart comics (the game store is in the back of the front room and has the whole back room full of tables for gaming. E-mail me your e-mail address sometime and maybe we can set up a date and time for you to come demo there. John (the proprietor) is supportive of people running different demos and games there. I was running a Great Rail Wars game there today. Besides your grandmother there's always the draw of Papa Del's...

Click my homepage below there is an email button on Sparky's web page. I've got this weekend booked with the double header and the first three weekends in October are booked too, however the weekend of September 28 is open and I might be able to convince my wife that she doesn't needed to see me for the day. Drop me a line if your game otherwise it is looking like first part of November before we can get there. :D
sdnelson
Sept 28th is bad for me. The wife and I just bought a house and we're going to have a yardsale that weekend to get rid of all the crap we've had in closets and storage for years... We don't want the new place to be cluttered. So go ahead and spend some wife time that day. From Nov 10th through Thanksgiving day are also bad for me due to visiting family. But otherwise I'm open. Plus if we wait until early November or December I can try to get the word out some. I can post flyers and John sends out a weekly e-mail to his customer list that lists dates and events as well as new releases and whatnot. I did speak with him briefly about CAV and he said I'm the first person to ask for it which is why he doesn't stock it. But if there was interest he'd be open to stocking it. He's also good about offering to order things for people. I'll have to get the JoR from him in a couple weeks and a few figs. He knows I love to spend money there. I have one friend who said he'd try the game as long as I was the one investing the money. He'll probably be up for the demo too.

Yeah, doncha hate that? It's just something I've had to accept for a year or so, it's why I maintain two CAVable armies.
sdnelson
Well, I can't blame him, I have a habit of getting people into new games. Half of our Great Rail Wars players were people I recruited, half of our Clan War players are people I drug into the game. And I'd just be happy to have someone to play CAV against every now and then, so if I build two armies, then it won't be an issue. This is also the same friend that I got into Crimson Skies and then convinced to join me in buying out a Canadian game store of all their Crimson Skies minis at clearance... We got about 80 planes in that deal, enough to make over 6 squadrons... I'm kind of a game pusher...

Totally awesome game. I used to carry it to conventions but now I'm a Reaper Man!
