The OSL Experiment

So, I'm working on this little lovely for fun, and possibly something else in the future. Thus, I decided I wanted to try OSL (object source lighting). It's certainly not finished yet (still a lot of work) and I think my OSL is off. So, a little help here?

going for that creepy "flashlight" from the bottom into the face look ... maybe think about making everything else darker (like the tree) ... like it's night ... you can put an owl in the tree or just some eyes looking out from the hole in the tree ... fun idea ... looks like you are headed in the right direction ...

I find it helps to sight along the source of the "light" to see where highlights (and shadows) should go. If you can't see a part from the perspective of the light, it shouldn't be lit up. Likewise, if something faces the light (like, it looks like, the far edge of the opening of the hole in the tree), it should be well lit up.

Looks like the light should hit the cloak more (I know a real lantern needs to project light outward, but it looks cooler for minis if you take some justice).  Another trick I've heard is to darken the areas opposite the light source.  So, the far side of the tree and the back of his cloak.  Looks great already though!

Oh, and bring the brightest/closest-to-source parts even closer to pure white.
