2015 Secret Sophie / Winter Exchange - CHATTER Thread!

Recommended Posts

Aaaargh the blending!!!

My eyes are crossing.

And realize I'm blending backwards, so taking a break, trying to kill my headache, making dinner, and saving data so I can resume the highlights after I complete the shadows. :grr:

Did I just hear a "Self BONKTM!"

Kinda like a 'Face Palm'? ::P:

Uuugh

After calculating work left to do.. about 20 hours to just finish the mini and another 30 or so for the base and Rest Of It (because I am going to make this fit my vision of what I wanted to send and to skimp now would be a disservice to my partner).

To my partner: I am going to be sending you my best work to date. I know it's late, but I'm pushing my own boundaries on this. I have been receiving feedback and advice from a few others here, and will post a WIP After The Fact after you've received it. Thank you for your tremendous patience.

At least 2 months for me.  3 is nice, especially for Secret Sophie, mostly if something needs to be ordered, as shipping from Reaper to here is usually around 2 weeks.

I tend to paint to the deadline. Hard for me to get finished early, I find it too easy to put things off.

In other news, I think I've received my exchange package.  My wife texted that there were two packages today (the other is from Lovejoy person...  ::D: ) and it's not big enough to be Mercs Recon.

Tracking on mine hasn't updated since it hit NY, so I'm assuming it is still snowed in there.

UPDATE! MAJOR PROGRESS! But I'll be without a Computer for a week or two as it needs a Screen Replaced. The back lighting stopped working in one corner and it is just a matter of time til the rest goes. So, getting that part replaced.

Quick survey: How do people like having 2 months to paint vs 3?  Is that just an extra month to procrastinate, or would it help improve your painting or your chances of getting it out on time?

3 months is better for me, because usually at least 2 of those weeks in the first month are given over to ordering minis (and then waiting for them to get here). If I decide that something not-Reaper should be a part of my (almost exclusively Reaper) exchange, then it could take longer--sometimes up to a month to get the stuff. And that doesn't take into account me being lazy and not figuring out what I wanted to do until late, or deciding that a particular mini isn't appropriate for some reason, or breaking a mini. The actual painting is rarely a big deal, although sometimes work intrudes.

Package received!!

My secret Sophie sent me this wonderfully painted  miniature (ack, late for D&D, I'll look up the figure name later) as an example of NMM, something that has been on my list for a while now.  I've watched many a video, but seeing it first hand is a different thing.

Formula's for all the NMM were included. A beautiful paint job.  Feel free to post up a show off thread if you have good pictures.  Otherwise I'll break out the rest of my lights and take some better ones.

And here's everything that was in the box (excluding the cool container the painted fig was in, which I really like!).

Two different CAV infantry packs! I'm just getting into CAV with the kickstarter (which is on the water and arriving in port soon!!) and as infantry weren't included in the kickstarter these are awesome additions. Boy are they tiny......

And some bases!!  I love getting bases, I really do.  About half of what I've taken out of the box o good wills has been bases.  Can't get enough different bases. (or I may have a base collecting related problem....)

Thanks so much to my secret Sophie!!

Sweeeeeeet mini Jasper!

Hope mine turns out as well as so many of these. I haven't finished a mini since 2003, so fingers crossed my skills are up for it.

Thanks knarthax, I can only hope.

My painting was interrupted tonight by both kids wanting to paint their dragon hatchlings. <_<

Not enough room for me to continue to paint.

But, they're painting. Michael with too much paint on his brush  and Thomas pressing his face all the way up to the swingarm magnifier.

Caught Michael using my size 0 Series 7 as a mixing brush :grr: Stopped that right quick and it's now clean and sitting away with conditioner to make sure the point is good.

AAAARGH

Also taught them to use Gunk, but they're loading too much paint on the brush. They will learn. They will learn.

Yep, 2 months is perfect– the only time it gets tricky is around the holidays. During normal months, more than 2 months and it falls off my radar and there isn't a healthy sense of urgency. The suspense of anxiously waiting 3 months for a mystery gift, for me, would be brutal. Two months is just enough time- my process looked something like this (with some time lost due to the bow incident & being out of the country).

Week 1: Receive exchange info // Marinate on creative ideas // Budget for the project

Week 2: Place orders for stuff // Gather materials you already have // Assemble base (if possible to do in advance)

Week 3: Receive order // Decide on final idea (I ordered two minis & decided after seeing them in person) // Gather reference photos

Week 4-7: Carve out "Painting Power Hour" blocks in order to make continual progress without having lots of free time

Week 8: Panic Painting // Shipping week

Package received!!

Wow, what a beautiful paintjob!

I think the mini is Monique Denoir (#02551)

Yep, that's Monique alright! She's a mini I gave up on halfway through a few years back since I found her difficult to paint with all those armor segments. They did a great job with her– the line quality on the edges of her armor, the highlights on her hair, and that sword... it's really great! Who painted this? Kudos!!  :B):

I managed to get my winter exchange piece and gifts to vegascat in time for Christmas. Since he sent me a heartfelt thank you directly and I know she made it I wanted to post up some of the photos I took before mailing her off. I will let vegascat share photos of the gifts if he chooses and just post the painted miniature. I had alot of fun painting her up and quite enjoyed keeping her to a limited palette. I am happy he likes her and that she made it safely during a busy mail time.

Here she is on her scenic base alongside the Golem Familiar from 02826.

And I wanted to keep her removable in case he wants to use her for gaming.

I enjoyed painting her quite a bit I think my favorite part was her skin, I used a bit of purple pink in the shadows which I think shows better in hand and then glazed it with a rosy flesh to help make it a bit warmer while still looking cool overall. I will have to pick her up again and paint one up to keep, she is just too pretty of a sculpt not to.

So, Dispatchdave painted me up a couple of minis for the Winter Exchange. These things are... I cannot express just how much I love these.

The colors used on Darkrasp are gorgeous. I love his skintone in particular. The robes are wonderful and (since things were a bit rubbed off when he got here), I touched up his chains and scythe. I did the scythe with a very pale blue, white brushed on top in a streaky pattern.

The visbaronesses face is my favorite bit (after that, the lovely autumn color selection). It's just stunning. the puffed up, slightly reddened cheeks, the perfect eyes, the amazing hair.

DD, you've seriously made me happy. Thank you so much for the fantastic miniatures!
