GW bringing back specialist games

I've got Frostgrave to scratch the Mordheim itch.

 

However, at this point, I feel that there are so many better options out there than what GW offers.

My experience has been that, yes, there are other games out there than fill the Mordheim* itch, but getting people to agree on which of those replacements to play has been exceedingly difficult.

 

For the last year, I've been trying to get a group going at my game store to play anything similar, such as Frostgrave or Song of Blades and Heroes in a campaign like format, but no one can agree on which rules would be best suited. The discussions always come back around to Mordheim, and so we had actually just recently forged ahead on trying to start a Mordheim campaign, trying to source rules and such.

 

Like it or not, in some areas, GW games are the one game that most people will agree on, even if they like something else better.

Man, if they would put out a version of Inquisitor that at least made a nod to some kind of rational force building I would be all over that. Or heck, if they'll just sell pretty, pretty 54mm figures again I'll buy those and use other rules.

I played Mordheim with early DHL Sisters of the Blade - didn't bother with any GW figs.

Oh, I'm not saying I'd have to have their figures to play it, they just had some cool sculpts in that range that I'd like to get my hands on. Heck, when I was playing it a couple years ago, there were figures from just about every range you can think of on the board.

 

 

RE: Frostgrave=Mordheim: the big difference is that in Mordheim your whole warband can gain experience and get better, where in Frostgrave it's just your wizard. Not a huge difference, but a difference none the less.

 

Like I've mentioned elsewhere, I'm not a GW fanboy any more (I stopped drinking the cool-aid quite a while ago), but I'm interested in seeing where this goes/how it plays out.

Their rules have always been mediocre at best

I think it's worth pointing out, though, that Specialist Games had some of the best rules sets that GW has ever produced.

Having said that, with so many of the old guard gone from the heyday of SG, I don't really trust their current design staff to handle it well. I'm foreseeing more limited boxed sets like Dreadfleet and the assassin game which I can't remember the name of. Having said that, I'd love to get my hands on a plastic boxed game for Warmaster.

So, cautious optimism at best from me, but mostly I'm in the "wait and see" camp.

I have to admit that I'm in the skeptical camp.

 

GW have made it very clear in recent years that they consider themselves to be a miniatures company and not a game company.  Given that, I don't expect a lot of support for their specialist games outside of models that they can sell to the public.  Basically, I don't have faith that the current GW will pull together a good ruleset given their stated focus and strategy.

 

With that said, they have such an old and fanatical fanbase for their specialist games that a simple dust-off of the old ruleset may be enough to get them bucketloads of money.

Actually, there are some great things they could do with new models. Most of the Blood Bowl range was from the mid-nineties, for example. Just revamping the minis to suit the style of the video game would be a huge draw for a lot of people. Then if they brought out a plastic gang kit set or two for Necromunda, I'd definitely be interested in that.

Oh, I'd love to see a new plastic Warmaster set! Battle of Five Amries is a great set, with beautiful minis in it; and forms a large chunk of my (non-Warmaster) 10mm armies. Why they didn't resurrect it for the movie is a mystery!

This team will almost be like a FFG within FW producing our old favourites, not everything is a board game, imagine other classic tabletop games getting an update, doesn't mean they have to change into a boardgame format. Sorry, how could they not be under the direct control of GW? Plus the Middle Earth stuff wouldn't last very long under the auspices of the Specialist Games since that contract is just about up and I seriously doubt that GW is going to renew it.

Well...when G.W. announced that they were dropping the Specialist Games, they also announced destroying all the molds for the games. That was the final straw for G.W. & I. Lack of anything resembling business ethics is one thing. Destroying the creative works of some very talented people is quite another.
