Stained glass inspiration for my game room?

Recommended Posts

So in the spirit of ReaperBryan's Redecorate My Office thread, I'm going to ask you guys for some help with part of my basement game room.

Unlike Bryan and his office, I do sort of have a theme for my game room which is basically medieval times meets Stargate address archive meets nerd cave. (I didn't say it was a good theme).

Anyway, my wife, who is a stained glass artist, promised me she would make me six pieces of stained glass of my design for use in the window shutters I started for the three basement windows.  The shutters will replace the shades, and by having them glass, I'll be able to leave them closed, but still hopefully let a lot of light in.

My problem is that for the last three years, I haven't finished my part of the project because I can't decide what designs I want for the stained glass. Which means my wife can't do hers.

The problem isn't coming up with a design or two, but coming up with ideas that look good together, can be paired (each window will have two pieces - one on each side of the shutter), AND can be made with at least 60% lighter translucent colors of glass to allow light in.

So what do you think would look cool for stained glass in a game room?  Each piece would be approximately 12" wide, by about 14" high, and as I mentioned, each shutter would have a right and left piece.  I don't care if the pair in each window are part of the same design, or just along the same themes.  I do want them to be somewhere in the sci-fi or fantasy realm.

I do have to draw all of the patterns myself (or commission someone to do them, which cuts into my glass budget).

here's some pics to give you a better idea:

Here are two of the windows in the corner with the video games:

Here is a sample of my book shelves with gaming, reference and fictions books, as well as some overflow hobby stuff. like Bones creatures:

And finally, here's one of the other walls near the bar area:

ask Siri for permission to recreate some of the drawings she has posted in Randomness and other places on the forums.  it's worth a minute to ask as the worst she can do is say no.  just a thought.

LOL Bryan...I was never a big MST3K fan, though. But I like that you threw my own suggestion to you right back at me...

If I actually wind up commissioning artwork, Siri is my first choice, because it will be dragons.

But I won't ask her for any without paying her.

I was so confused for a minute about your sideways portraits in the third picture. I was like "Huh, I've never seen anyone hang artwork that way..."

It's been a long day, okay? ::P:

I was thinking stylized iconic scenes from various shows/movies that involve going through a portal? SG-1 going through the gate, portal videogame, Star Trek and the Guardian of Forever, The Fellowship at the gates of Moria...

Is it wrong that my first reaction was jealousy of your Renegate Legion box sets? ::D:

I propose a simplified version of the Interceptor cover for one window.

A dragon entering a star gate in one window and exiting in the other.

Ooooh! I like that one.

How about a window that a collage of various superhero symbols - like:

Hmm - that's cool - though superheroes are down on my list of things I like. I wonder if I could work up something similar for other properties?

LOL.  ^_^

It was the forum that did that. It's actually turned correctly here: http://chris.heismann.net/IMG_1605.JPG

So blame Bryan

I'd also consider some movie posters for inspiration.

Tron, Back to the Future, Forbidden Planet, Evil Dead, Poltergeist,

Are you volunteering to sculpt it?

Not at all. I'd love for that line of games to come back.

I propose a simplified version of the Interceptor cover for one window.

Doh! This is brilliant. I didn't even think to mine my game collection for worthy images. One window could be Interceptor on one side, and Centurion on the other. The original DMG cover would probably look good, too. Now I have research some other options.

I'll have to keep this in mind if I commission Siri for artwork.

I'm taking the leap and about to buy my first airbrush for mini painting and was hoping I could get some advice on what to buy. The Airbrushing: compendium has been very helpful and I've spent hours, days, what feels like years researching and I want to pull the trigger... I live in Canada and after ringing around some hobbyshops etc it seems amazon is the best bang for my buck. I have paint and access to a Campbell Hausfeld 2 Gallon Air Compressor (I will purchase another compressor in a few months once I have some more disposable income). My main concerns are does this compressor work with the airbrush listed below, do I need anything else? Heres what I've got in mind:   NEO CN GRAVITY-FEED DUAL-ACTION AIRBRUSH $97.20 CAD Paasche 10-foot Nylon Braided Hose $18 CAD Airbrush Cleaner 4 Kit, Washing Tools - Glass Cleaning Pot etc $22 CAD Vallejo Airbrush Cleaner 85ml $7 CAD   any advice would be appreciated

Hi! I just got some Warhammer pink horrors and have no idea what MSP colors to buy to paint them. I have no pinks at all and don't know what would be best. Does anyone have any advice?

Note that I have all of the citadel shades so I think I'm covered there.

      Thanks in advance!

Okay, here's the situation; my parents went away on a week's vacation, and now that you're rapping Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff to yourself (you are, right?), here's the real situation:

I'm looking for a thing to represent a mounted Undead lord, the base size needs to be 75mm square (so fairly large), and it needs to occupy most of that space (or need minimal assistance from clever basing to look like it belongs on said base, at least). This precludes standard cavalry, obviously. It also needs to be wingless (or easily converted to wingless), as Wings would only serve to confuse my opponents in game (Kings of War).

I'm open to any material, any manufacturer, though Reaper is strongly preferred. I'm thinking of also doing a non-traditional mount pose, like the Ghost King standing on the mounts back or shoulder or whatever, or even better, the Male Revenant from Bones 2.

My first thought was to take one of the two Grave Golems I have and use that (without the gate wings), but that would really be stretching the empty space on the base to the max, as it's probably better suited for a 40mm square or 50mm square base at max. Of course, I could always fill the base with tombstones and skulls and stuff and build it up to the center, but I'd like to avoid that. The in-game creature is substantial and I'd like the mini to represent the size well.

My next thought was I could do something like @Girot did for the Bone Horror (3rd picture in the store), which he nixed the wings from, and I think it looks fine. The problem here is the monster itself is pretty substantially threatening without a rider and doesn't really look like a mount. I'm not sure where I would put one (I could put a traditional saddled mount on it I guess, but I'm iffy on this idea). The main issue I have pulling the trigger on this beastie though is size, I'm not seeing Bryangles on the store pics, and having a hard time finding other scale shots with this guy in it. I see on his Deviant Art page, Girot says he used a 60mm round, do you think an extra 15mm each side would be too much? Especially because that's all in one dimension? The rest of the base will need a lot of doctoring to make up for the emptiness.

      Any other ideas?

So, trying to figure out what I'm doing for reapercon. I've lost my vallejo leather instructions in my move, so I'm not super comfortable with where I'm at painting new leather and wood.

I have a few miniatures started that I could touch up/finish, or I could start a different new miniature...

Here are the ones I'm currently considering:

      1. Oathsworn Tiefling
I really think she has the best face I've ever painted, and I'm really happy about what I achieved in her purple sash. But the rest of her, I'm a bit iffy on.

      2. Reaper Bryn Half-Elf Rogue
So, I'm really proud of her leathers (before I lost my directions) and her sleeves, but she has on of the worst faces I've done recently, due to the more narrow shape of her face. Her hair also leaves a lot to be desired. I also am worried about being able to finish those remaining leathers as well as the first several.

      3. Reaper Ametrine, Gnome Alchemist
She's my most recent mini, and my first attempt at trying to figure out the leather on my own as well as my first attempt at painting potion bottles. I'm really happy about her hair, and her face is decent, even if it isn't my best.

I'd love to here opinions about where one(s) to choose, and advice on how to potentially improve them.

Hey guys. I'm back after having my wisdom teeth removed :/ nasty surgery had to have some recovery. But I started painting again and I was wondering; am I getting speckling here? It used to be really bad but I diluted down a touch and I think it's better. Could use some help.
